Just to answer this for you, it is usually considered a good plan to have 20+ left come the new year. But that does mean with all the extra ones you can actually do 1 a week if wanted/needed. But like Maldini says the main tactic seems to be to get a decent, playing, starting xi and hang on for a while to see how it pans out and what bargains appear. Of course if injuries or non starters happen then reassess. Not necessarily the best way though but I'd definitely aim for 20 transfers left on Jan 1st, which is easier said than done when you get carried away!
