European Championship Group D

Post by jimmy ching »

Well, it kicks off tonight. This seems like the only group that makes it a challenge to reach France 2016.
We have a group of strong independant countries.

Germany are a given. World Champs, always qualify convincingly. First place.

Scotland, a renaissance under Strachan. Would be a wonderful way to enter France as an independent country.March 2016 is the date, if they vote yes.

Ireland. Struggling under O Niell but his mentality is as strong as his forefathers. 2016 would be a century since The Easter Rising.

Georgia. It was 2008 when they rid the yolk of Russia. Another Rugby nation that transfers it's mentality to the football field.

Poland. The first nation to shake off the shackles of Russia with Solidarity. Renowned for fighting their corner.

Gibraltar. Still a mummys boy but making their first appearance as a football team. Will the other teams point them in the right direction?

It's quite hard to pick the winners aside from Germany. The bookies have them as follows to qualify.

Germany 1/100, Poland Evens, Ireland 6/4, Scotland 7/4, Georgia 14/1, Gibraltar Forget it.

It's a complete joke that Gibraltar have been allowed in. Their first ever home qualifier and they have to play in Portugal as they haven't a pitch. Even San Marino, the Faroe Islands and Andorra only play at "home" outside of their own borders due to having too small stadia and playing opposition with a large following but at least they have stadia.

The joke might be on UEFA with this group. It seems likely goal difference might come in to it. There is no excuse for teams to take it easy against them.

A different group but a massive result for Northern Ireland in Hungary - puts them in with a great shout of a play-off place at least at this early stage, in a group without a major power.

Gibraltar are frustrating Poland. The goal was a deflection and Gib have had a couple of near misses. Poland doing the possession but not much end result. Half time 1-0

I must say there was some really good goals last night. I thought the Scottish one was a beauty. I've been quite surprised by the standard of the so called unrated teams. If McGeady had done that in a Brazilian shirt everybody would be calling him world class. That Anya looks as though there is more to come from him.

This question may come up on QoS at some point.
How did both Albania and Poland come away with EC victories in Portugal at the same time?
A country competing in the EC with no home stadium, farcical.

Yeah, that's a good trivia question. Just read that Ronaldo was rested. So makes a bit more sense!
