Road bike for a 14 year old

Post by Tricky Tree »

Birthday soon and I think he's after a road bike. He's pretty fit but not had a bike for a couple of years. Suspect he'll use it for fairly short rides generally, 5/10 miles to cricket and stuff. Is this one as good as any..

Will need to measure him later but think he's about 5'5"

The dimensions say its 950cm high. Mini Tree might struggle to get on a bike over 31 feet high if he's 5 ft 3. :)

It's 55ft long as well so he will need long arms

He'll need to tow a cherry picker behind him so he can get on and off.

Sizing guide here

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/h/option/bikesizeguide" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

knew I'd seen a budget bike article somewhere in the last couple of months, just found it

http://road.cc/content/news/72001-best- ... -%C2%A3500" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Looks like you may need a 50cm frame if its a road bike you're after, This is available from that list in a 51cm frame which may or may not be about right (how quick is he growing), probably best to get Tree Jr down to a shop and have him sit one one if they have that size frame in.

The Triban 3 has had good write up on a few places but it looks out of stock in the size you want as they're about to launch the new model

With a supermarket bso (bike shaped object) you'll probably have to build it yourself or pay a shop to, so factor that in.

If you buy a bike from Tesco you'll also have to factor in the cost of buying a proper bike a few weeks later.

I'll stick a note up on the club forum to see if anyone's got a small road bike to sell.

Wanted ad posted. Long shot, but you never know and it's likely to be a better bike than a new halfords / tesco and also likely to have been looked after.

So, he's measured up at 5' 3 1/2" and we do think he's having a growth spurt. I would say he fits in the 51/52 cm size frame

Know someone (in Beeston) that was selling a Trek Lexa 52cm for around £200. Women specific but nothing really to identify it as a womans bike (it's not pink!). Just a slightly more sloping top tube an smaller bars / levers for smaller hands. They're about £600 new. Good entry level road bike.

Trying to find out if she's still selling it.

White with black decals. Sora Gruppo. Nice bike. I'll let you know.
