Shops selling food items past their best before date?

Post by Richt »

Is that even legal?

B&M in Chippenham, selling Tiger nuts a month past it's date (for 10p)

Same shop selling Walkers French Fries, multi pack, 3 weeks after best before date for 20p.

Didn't that used to be illegal? Items near their best before date, fair enough. But 3 weeks out of date?

Has this changed now or is it in the small print with the best before v use by dates?

Is it past best before date or past sell by date?

French Fries, Best Before 29/03/14

I did wonder if they would get round the legalities because of the BB date not UB.

I think they can if it is longer shelf life food and the food has not deteriorated to a point where it is not safe to eat

Eggs I keep in the fridge and have never seen a use by date on a carton. I have used them several weeks after buying them and have not died yet.

Apparently nobody who has died from eating out of date food has ever complained.

Our chooks often lay in odd places and it can be a while before we find them. We do tend to float test them but they last for ages. Amazing design.

Re the OP, I'd be glad if shops were less fussy about dates. Some stuff obviously needs to be more closely controlled (e.g. milk) but lots of things last much longer than the dates suggest and this causes massive amounts of food waste.

We generally apply the sniff test to most stuff in our house.....and before any smart arse suggests it...no not for eggs
