Greene King Yardbird IPA, Suffolk n good 7/10

Theres a couple I'm looking forward to trying days 13 & 14! Got to get Manns Brown Ale out of the way first.

Tontine milk stout today and yet another one I've never heard of. I've been very impressed so far but haven't tasted any yet.

Hope I've got the days right. After a few 'yet another predictable beer' days things have changed somewhat-

12. Mann's Brown Ale - I thought there was some law that only blokes over 80 and Geordies were allowed to drink brown ale. I can see now that it isn't a law, just common sense in that you only drink it due to senility or a dumb macho spirit that also makes you go out shirtless in a December blizzard. Poor with a worse aftertaste. 4/10.
13. Heather Ale - What?? Saw the impressive gaelicy label and thought it was some trendy modern thing then I saw the word Heather and panicked. Read that it is actually ancient not just a modern invention. Strange taste, not horrible, not heathery but not really nice either. 6/10
14. Tontine milk stout - I thought there was some law that only women over 90 living on Coronation Street in the 1970s were allowed to drink milk stout??? No idea what it actually is but will give it a go later. It'll be like a milky Guinness right?????

PS Was in Morrisons on Tuesday. Didn't spot the reduced calendar.....

Drunk it now. Two big plusses - one, it wasn't brown ale and two, it didn't taste of milk. On the negative side, it wasn't that nice. 5.5/10

Went to Hartlepool Morrisons - the reduced beer advent calendars were just left over stock from the Black Friday deals - not new delivery so if there were any left over then they were reduced - if they sold out at the time then they don't have any to reduce. Hartlepool didn't have any!

Currently have a backlog of 5 to get thru. Trying to summon up the courage to face the Manns Brown Ale which is next. I also view it as an old mans drink and while I remember seeing it plenty of times over the years Ive never felt the need to try it before.

OK after putting off drinking Manns Brown Ale since 1902 - I took the plunge and tried it. Shock horror - I kinda liked it - but then I do fit most of the profile that murf described. 6.75/10!
Did anyone else notice it was only 2.8%?

Now on to the Heather Ale - brewed for over 4,000 years according to the blurb (but only by this brewery for the last 20+ - so that's about 0.5% of its life time). Quite looking forward to this one.

Well you cant say that this box isn't varied.

Fraoch Heather Ale - liked this one a lot 7.25/10 would buy it again.

Tontine Milk Stout brewed within 15 miles of my cave - yes a dark beer that hit the spot would buy it again but couldn't drink a lot of it in one sitting as it was a little bit sickly 7/10.

North Pale Ale - Didn't really get the name as it is brewed in Hampshire. Nice but a felt it was a bit bland - still enjoyed it but went without making me sit up 6.5/10.

About what I thought!

The Belhaven Scottish one (yesterday) was similar in some ways but slightly more flavoursome so gets a solid 7/10.

Tried a couple of the beers at the weekend. The milkshake milk stout was much nicer than I expected, the plain milk stout was similar to Guiness and therefore horrible, the heather ale was bearable as it was in a small bottle and the sticky toffee pudding thing was horrendous.

To be fair on the selection overall I did pick out the ones I was expecting not to like.

So, did anyone manage to finish all 24 bottles and more importantly (as I missed out on grabbing one this year) would you buy one again next year?

I'd certainly recommend it. Haven't discovered any new faves and have had to put up with some weird stuff but all in all a nice seasonal change or 24.

I've been behind schedule and not had any alcohol at all since the 16th. Made up for it down the pub yesterday and it even made the last scratchings of this man flu fade further away. So today it was back to the advent calendar and I was rewarded with....

(17) - Double Chocolate Stout. What? Really? Why? Couldn't be as bad as it sounded could it? Nope. It wasn't. It was worse. Much worse. Vile. 1/10 (and it only got 1 because I need the 0 to go down to if something actually makes me physically sick rather than just retch).

(18) - Spitfire. Proper British beer brewed in someone's shed using unwashed vats and bottles. Shoots down a german lager but, alas, not quite worthy of its aviatory namesake (or the fantastic PSB track). A nice enough beer but no spitfire bird. 7/10.

Now onto the port....

Finishing mine off this weekend as I did have a few other bottles in between. I would love to be able to get more bottles of that type of beer in the small measures they provided.

Anybody found a good one for us all to go for in 2019?
Iceland Craft beer - £40 Link
Waitrose 'Best of British Beer'(not heard of any of them) - £50 Link

Mirror review a few non-beer ones, the Aldi wine one and the whisky and absinthe(!) ones are quite interesting.

Anything from Morrisons??

maybe a bit early yet. Last year's one at Morrisons was part of their Black Friday promotion. £30 rather than the £60  they say it should have cost. Although £30 was a pretty good price.

They are selling a gin one but no sign of a beer one. :(

I could be tempted by the Iceland one.

I just really like the size of the bottles. You can sample quite a few without having your head nailed to the pillow in the morning. :D
