Made my first soup today

Post by stevejtr »

Never made soup before. Had this at Haydock and it was fabulous, so I thought I'd have a go. Easier than I thought tbh. One giant sized Sweet Potato, some diced squash, Onion, smidge of cumin, a chilli, chilli paste, garlic paste, red lentils and a carrot. A litre of veg stock. Sort the lentils, soften the veg, 30 minutes on simmer and then blend. Sooper. Salt & pepper to season during softening.

It's MamaJtr's 80th on Sunday and I'm doing 4 courses for 9 people. Thought I'd better try the soup out before the day... will have to tone down the chilli tho

Starter: Sweet Potato & Butternut Squash soup. Might do some taster steak & kidney pies with mini mash as a second choice. Bought a muffin tray today just in case.

Main: Roast Lamb. Roast Spuds and half a dozen veg

Dessert: Lemon Torte/Chocolate Fudge Cake

Cheeseboard: Stilton with cranberries, brie, cheshire, camembert, some cheddar for heathen BroJtr and some nice ripe Saint Agur and Blacksticks Blue pour moi. 3 chutneys, crackers and green/red grapes and some walnuts. Sorted.

And then we should all be fit to burst.

Sorting lentils must take time

Looks a pretty good meal though

Nice menu.

Soup is great. Very good for getting veggies down the kid's necks.

Keep on making it. You can do it from anything.

Look at the local greengrocer. Any stuff a little bit past it's best gets sold for next to nothing. Make soup and remember to keep adding chilli, paprika, garlic, ginger, LOTS of pepper, etc etc Tiny bit of meat if you want (cheap shanks etc)...If you can make soup, you'll never go hungry.

yeah seemed really easy and unless you drown it in stock, hard to get very wrong.

Made a large casserole potful so plenty for me for lunch for a couple of day whilst I'm down in Stone and Mrs/MiniJtr for tomorrow evening's starter.

soup is great. Love making batches up and often it is squash based and other root veg. (the stock made by bouillon (sp) is great by the way)

6 veg on your main! that's a lot

Sounds like this one which was very nice (And that is said by me - I don't normally go for soups, especially involving lentils and vegetables.....)

similar. I combined two different recipes and added some of my own stuff. Jamie & BBC Good food I think

Will have to turn the heat down on the one I prepare this afternoon for MamaJtr... can't imagine blowing her head off with chili being appropriate for her 80th

Picking up a brand new blender on Monday. Cheap as chips from one of those buy and sell pages on the book of faces.

Looking forward to making my own soup. I have it everyday at work for my lunch at the moment, will be good to have some homemade .

Home made soup is cheap and tasty and far better than any stuff you can buy in the supermarket.

Now, I am of course expecting a poster from Kidderminster/wales to come on to tell us how he is the CEO of Campbells. And once sold his own brand soup company to Baxters..... or something.....

Just made tomorrows starter. Not bad... First course isn't til 2.30 - BroJtr is working in the morning so I get a lie in too :D . Will kick the lamb off around 13.15. Nice 'n' slow...

Will keep you posted but the soup idea is a good one. Dead easy to make, cheap and a nice homemade touch to it.

Quite pleased.

Blimey...just sat down. Lamb went in at 10.45 this morning and not stopped since.

Meal went really well. MamaJtr was chuffed. SisJtr + hubbie and BroJtr both enjoyed too. One minor setback - BroJtr's missus woke up and has Mumps. Platefuls went back with Bro for her and her son.

Great day but the dishwasher has been on all day and I'm knackered
