Travel insurance for pre-existing conditions

Post by WilBert »

Travelling with an elderly relative (74) who's had a cancerous tumour removed 2 years ago but has since had the all clear. He also had a heart attack, had a stent put in and is on medication.

We don't want cover for Cancer treatment but would for any heart issues. The specialist companies are charging £700+ for him alone and less reliable companies who don't make things very clear in their small print around £150.

We're going around in circles with our research and I'm thinking of leaving him in the departure lounge Father Ted style. Any help or advice would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Ten years ago I paid a small fortune for travel insurance a few weeks after a heart attack. The research that I did at the time suggested that the premium drops very significantly the longer the period between the heart attack and travel. Very high for the first year, but quite reasonable after several years when there haven't been any signs of a reoccurrence in the intervening period. If your relative had his heart attack relatively recently, you might not be able to avoid a high premium, but I'm sure that on-line research would pay off. In my case, my GP suggested a local specialist broker who in the event wasn't able to offer me an appropriate package, but I did eventually purchase a policy as a result of pursuing one of his several suggestions.

Thanks Striker, I'll keep looking, looks like he's not reached the several years point yet.

When you got into the small print for most of the big insurers either wouldn't cover or charged thousands!

Went through these brokers http://www.portwood.co.uk/about_us.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; £50 - Bargain! I would highly recommend them. :D
