Can request on behalf of FISO that you attempt to provide us with a running commentary of the journey? I want to know the exact moment you break

You need a high Viz jacket, a breathalyser and those things on your lights to make the glare fit with driving on the wrong side

I believe you are not allowed a sat nav that has speed camera installed.

You need spare bulbs for your lights - even if you would not know how to fit them.

You may need a warning triangle.

You should also note that they drive on the right.

They don't eat them - the closest you will get will be what they call a bageutte and a slice of undercooked horse. If you want cheese you are limited to camembert or brie - they have not heard of proper british cheese such as cheddar or edam.

You can then assemble something approaching a burger - but if you want good solid English grub you should have gone to Southern Spain :(

Added bonus many mcd's have self serve machines so you don't have to order in French. Plus free wifi for your transfers.

Good evening,

We set off for France this coming Friday am :|

1) We're staying close to Nantes does can anyone recommend any family days out. I'll have the car and don't mind driving

2) I've signed up for a deal with my mobile phone provider that allows me to use my phone whilst away for £2 a day. Has anyone used google maps in France before that can confirm my google satnav will be able to provide directions when we get to France?

3) I'm coming under increasing pressure to leave the resort a day early and drive to Disneyland Paris on the way home - it's probably only a 4hour diversion! I appreciate this will cost me an arm and a leg. Anyone recommend a good hotel nearby? Any deals on tickets to get in to see Mickey? Will Buzz Lightyear be there, is he 'Disney'?

4) I think I've heard somewhere that some of these Fantasy Footy games don't allow foreign entrants. When I'm in France and I decide that Bojan was a huge mistake will I still be able to make transfers or will they be blocked if I have a foreign IP address?

I'm sure I'll think of some other queries whilst I'm waiting for Rory to tee off.

Cheers :D

5) What the chances of me picking up English speaking commentary on the Saturday footy matches using a normal car radio?

1. McDonalds? (Free Wifi)
2. Navfree's excellent
3. I wouldn't recommend it - you're driving to/from the wrong side of Paris. If you do, have a good rest and plan your route as your sat-nav will probably take you down the champs elysees! 4 hrs will turn into 6 very easily!
4. Register before you go and it shouldn't be a problem.
5. Tunein radio through wifi (see option 1)

Have fun, good luck with the drive.

I'm the middle child of 3 and when we were circa 9-15 years old our parents used to drive us to Northern Italy each summer (usually lake Garda) stopping off at various Canvas Holiday sites along the way down and back up, through France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland etc. Each time better than the last, you'll all have an amazing time.

I listen to Radio 5 on old analogue radio.
They stop broadcasts on the internet though. Due to viewing rights etc.

Also listen to it on my car radio.

You are in Brittany aren't you? Not sure how close you are to the channel or Nantes but does the signal usually get that far?

Yes, it works when I visit Nantes. It does get Spanish radio interference in the evening though, so you can change from 693 to 909.

I've been on the island of Noirmoutier on the Vendee coast all week, came back yesterday. 5 and 2 year old in tow. Drove derby to portsmouth, sailed to cherbourg, 7 hours to campsite with a night stopover. Back to caen, back to portsmouth, back to derby. Dvd players on headrests, games of Car snooker and Nobbys v Stobbys (pm me for the rules!) but they were pretty good and only grizzled a bit. However..........

Sailed back last night just as Bertha was bashing the south coast. Horrible, horrible end to a lovely week. I have never been so ill and thrown up as much. It looked like a hospital ship by the end of the crossing with everyone green, 2 hours to get off the boat and through customs and finally got home at 3.15am. Not good!

Got 5 live everywhere though and 198 long wave clear as a bell for the test match if thats your bag

Arrived 7pm on Sat after pretty much two days solid driving.

I'm sure one day we'll look back on the whole experience with fond memories but its not something I would choose to do again in a hurry. A shame we have to do it all again to get home! :-(

On a more positive note, the sun is shining, the facilities are first class and the beer is flowing.

Sat - left at 6am for 7.30 euro tunnel, arrived at Saint Jean de Monts 7pm.

Probably easier in some ways to go further South I reckon.

I flew to Carcassone and then drove down to the Southern Pyrenees. Total journey time 6 hours from door to door = happy kids.

Bloody hot down there though. OK where we were staying in the Mountains but went to a water park on the coast (near Perpignan) and it hit 36 degrees by late afternoon.

murf wrote:Done it. Just avoid Paris if you can suss a better route. Parisian driving is horrible, rest of toll roads far better than UK. All miles better than going squeasyjet and take whatever luggage you can fit in.

I'd thoroughly recommend it.

......without kids.
+1 on all those points

I hate flying, and my parents (who also hate flying, I blame them for my phobia) always used to take us to the west/SW coast, so its something I enjoy.

I don't mind the drive, and you go from motorway in England to motorway in France through Le Tunnel in under an hour (so no faffing with slow ferries and choppy crossings). You can stop when you like for a break, take your time, and are not treated like cattle at airports and on a plane.

By the time you add up time getting to an airport, checking in, boarding, flying, landing, getting luggage, transfers etc you will be looking at several hours. I can get to the to the west coast in about 10 hours all in, which isn't much more.

Plus planes go missing or get shot down...and don't get me started on turbulence :(

Obviously you have to like France as a holiday destination, which I do.

Caveats
1) I only had to drive from London
2) Convertible car
3) No kids

:)

Ps What is the name of the place you are staying at, and it is any good?

The place we are staying at is shown above.

It's perfect for young kids. Pool area is great with lots for them to do. Huge supermarket next door, each caravan has its own BBQ and outdoor seating area. Our caravan has 3 separate bedrooms - which was vital for us being able to keep the kids separate to suit their sleeping patterns! A lot of English families with young children here, if that's a bonus? It is if it means the kids have others to play/mix with.

Oh and the on site bar has Sky Sports on :D

We chose the tunnel over the ferry for the cost savings. At the time I looked the tunnel was £75 each way, ferry was £200+ each way.

I think we're going to drive North today to check out the beach at La Baule.

Au revoir.

:D
