If you like Lee Childs you will also like???

Post by Achiles74 »

A thread, many of us are big fans or Lee Child (The author) and his titler character "Jack Reacher".

Having read all of the Lee Child novels now, I'm writing this thread so we can all suggest other authors which match up to the greatness of Lee Child (Similar type of novel's please). I'm not looking for the latest chick lit or jane Austin novel.

So suggest away peoples.

I struggle to enjoy Harlan Coben, the Myron Bolitar books I like, the rest I find a bit meh.

My other favourites that I stumled into last year is Robert Crais, the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike combo is very good and I like the humour in them.

David Baldacci is similar in military tone to Childs in many of his books. I think we've already gone over Michael Connelly a while back in another thread.

Harlan Coben definitely, and also Sean Black. He writes with the pace of Lee Child and the heart of Harlan Coben.

Others in similar vein are David Baldacci and Simon Kernick.

Harlan Coben (Both Bolitar & the Standalone's - One of my faves; Try 'Tell no One' or 'Gone for Good' as an intro)
Simon Kernick
Sean Black (Ryan Lock) (Start with 'Lockdown' It was free with a Lee Child novel in Waterstones recently)
Michael Connelly (Harry Bosch)(Try 'Angels Flight' or 'The Poet')
Robert Crais (Elvis Cole & Joe Pike)

all great reads as previously mentioned. I find Coben out-twists all of them with ease. Kernick is a fabulous British author for pacy unputdownableness
( :D ) This is the genre I like. I'll also through in a few others Ive enjoyed for you to have a peek at:

Barry Eisler (John Rain)
JA Kerley (Carson Ryder)
Derek Haas (Columbus)
Jeffrey Deaver (Lincoln Rhyme) (Deaver tends to pick a subject, learn all about it (say Magicians) then write a novel around it I find)
Stephen Hunter (Bob Lee Swagger)
Tom Cain (Carver)

Joseph Teller & Joseph Finder also worth a shout.

I love simon kernick absolutely superbly written crime thrillers many with great twists which the jack reacher series lack although I like them too. Read them in order as characters are developed.

Stephen leather has a dan sheppard character in the same vein as jack reacher and I'm sure you will enjoy those and there are loads to bash your way through, I've done about 4. His stand alone thrillers are good too.

I also really liked some of the James Rollins books as good page turner thrillers.

Reginald Hill - in a class of his own.

Try his last novel, The Woodcutter, as a taster.

I didnt take to Abbott on first try. Maybe I should give it another go. Another author Ive enjoyed I forgot to mention id Jeff Lindsay. He writes the "Dexter" stories. Yes the TV show is good, but Ive never before witnessed such a mastery of alliteration in an author.

Like the look of Brett Battles Takeshi, and only a couple quid on kindle :D I'm also a big Eisler fan, and would recommend you take a gander at Derek Haas (Columbus) - think you might like it.

Has anyone come across any of Tom Wood's work? I've just been given The Hunter by a fellow Lee Child/Jack Reacher fan who says its excellent.

Indeed, one of the one-line reviews suggests it has promise:
'Jack Reacher meets Thomas Crown in this electrifying thriller' - Simon Kernick

Also enjoyed this book - very good. Then I read Michael Connellys new one - "The Drop". Brilliant. Harry Bosch back to his best.

Yep - its a bit better than some of the recent stuff he's put out which I thought was getting toward mediocre. Takes you back to the end of his Military career & takes in the origin of the famous toothbrush he carries.

Simon Kernick's Relentless is one of the best thrillers I've ever read, certainly the fastest-paced. Are his other books as good? Harlan Coben's Tell No One and Gone for Good are also brilliant.

Oh yes but you should read them in order. He's my fav author. Simple but brilliantly written. A friend of mine is a book bovin and I gave him a few to read when he went on hols, he texted me from Greece to say he couldn't put the damn books down and had become a holiday book bore !

Completely agree - read all Kernicks books - very pacey, brilliant.

Also second BW's shout - those two Coben books are excellent. Nobody Ive read yet can twist a tale like Coben.

Just finished it, very good.

Also just finished Simon Kernicks latest The Siege, not his best but still a good page turner.

Going to give Michael Connolly a go starting with the first Bosch Black Echo, see how I get on, edit not a bad read.

I would heartily recommend "Zero Day" by David Baldacci to Reacher fans. It's Baldacci's first book featuring Army CID investigator John Puller, who isn't to dissimilar to Reacher.

Really really like these Harlan Coben books, read the two Billy Whiz recommended and now reading them in order from that point on so next up was Just one Look which was just ridiculous (ridiculously good I hasten to add) in its multi layered plot with twists. I just don't know how he does it so well every time. I think he's better than my favourite Simon Kernick to be honest.

Next up No second chance. :D
