Then to cap it my wife was conned by a street "artist" who drew a crappy picture that looked nothing like her. He was laughing all the way to the bar.

I was told afterwards where an Impressionist gallery was.
That's a real shame. The musee d'orsay in paris houses probably the finest collection of impressionist art in the world. Next time...

The Louvre is a mightily impressive place though. The sheer scale of the place is breathtaking

The added definition helps massively (IMO). Prefer more realism rather than interpretation myself. Looking round my study I see all 4 things hanging on my walls are photos - explains a lot!
I can appreciate, say, a Constable or a Monet but probably wouldn't want them on my wall.

From a Tate exhibition catalogue cover -Magic Realism art in Weimar Germany 1919-1933 Albert Birkle The Acrobat Schulz V 1921 The George Economou Collection © DACS 2018
Edit to add - I am a landscape ( Constable) and surrealist ( Dali) fan. This one was sent to me by my mother (86) when my parents were planning a trip the Tate.

This is titled "European ladies in India in the late 17th century". Notice anything unusual about it? Is this really how European women dressed in India in those days? No wonder the British Raj was such a popular career choice
