I think that the basic strategy is to be a leading Premiership club, without going bankrupt. Tough going when the current Big Four all have greater resources - massively so in 3 cases (City, Chelsea & United) and significantly so in the case of Arsenal. It is to Spurs' huge credit that they have finished in the Top 5 in each of the past 3 seasons with no weekly wages > 100k and no incoming transfers > 20 million (so far) - contrast this with Liverpool!

It's a tough journey, often requiring backward steps to go forward later on - and I think that the coming season will be one of those reverse steps but, without a massive external cash injection and taking into account that a new stadium is required, it's practically impossible for Spurs to finish in the Top 4 every season. Maybe FFP will level the playing field, but I'm not holding my breath.

My only real complaint is that, yet again, the transfer business has not been concluded before the Premiership KO; although I applaud Levy for refusing to be ripped off by Real Madrid.

Do understand all your points and agree to an extent, but to do that you cant keep re inventing the wheel to do it. The new stadium has been talked about since the 60's and still not a spade in ground.
Spurs fans I hear from have been aware of the need to buy strikers for a long time, the season starts in days, thats not just cutting it fine, to me thats not a good plan, no matter how good the principals behind it are. Newcastle and in my view Everton will threaten Spurs top 5 finish which could make it even harder to stay as they are now a leading Prem club, they wont be only club that could benefit, if FPR is properly implemented, Sunderland, Villa etc.

Agree with both of you to an extent.

Spurs have got themselves in a mess by holding out for the right deals, but what's the alternative? Should they just buy and sell for whatever the top sides want? This has happened to Everton for years in both buying and selling. Obviously I hope the teams involved in these situations suffer the same kind of hangover that Everton have in years gone.

Touch wood, the timely sale of Rodwell seems to removed that pressure from us this year and our first XI looks settled.

Hopefully in the future the transfer window eventually moves to a preseason close so all this posturing can end and we can just have teams compete against each other without late handicapping.

But that was under Del Boy Redknapp. I don't see AVB as such a wheeler/dealer....

Opinions sought please, what is Spurs best XI likely to be. My guess -

Friedel
Walker
Kaboul
Vertonghen
BAE
Lennon
Huddlestone
Parker (when fit)
Bale
VDV
Defoe

Much, of course, depends on AVB and any new transfer activity. As things currently stand, I have a feeling that Sigurdsson may get more game time than VdV, unless the later can get fit enough for AVB's requirements. Sandro may also rise higher in the pecking order than Parker or Huddlestone and there is also the chance that Spurs are really serious about getting 35+milllion sterling for Modric, in which case he will stay at WHL.

Hard to know as Gallas started in the last 2 friendlies - but is rumoured to be available for sale. I hope that it's Kaboul, but fear that it might be Dawson. Who really knows, by Xmas it could be Caulker and Vertonghen in central defence?

Modric closes on Real Madrid move...it will be interesting to see who the replacement is?

Cracking winner, for England v Italy, from Defoe tonight. 8-) I also notice that Vertonghen scored for Belgium (VdV played for the first 48 mins) and that Bale played 62 mins for Wales before coming off as part of a dual sub, so hopefully no injury.

Nice to see both Caulker and Livermore, alongside Walker and JDF, in the England squad. Go the youngsters - let's hope that the days of buying old hacks, like Gallas, Saha and Nelsen, have passed.

In reply to the previous post - TTBOMK, Lennon is fit and Kyle Walker has been talking up his partnership with the little winger (on the Spurs Site), so I expect both to start against Newcastle.

It says he is expected back on the 18th and Bale has been playing it down himself.

Well, "Sigurdsson and Van der Vaart haven't yet found a way to mesh in the lineup" jumped out at me....

Dawson and Caulker have both been linked with Liverpool by the Daily Mirror.
So I would guess the defensive partnership will be Vertonghan and Gallas.

I did warn the spurs that Already Virtually bigger has an unsettling effect; he's abrasive, arrogant and as tight as a tick (witness his goal celebration which seems robotic and rehearsed..remember the fake chelsea comaraderie when scoring). Granted 'Castle away is no easy but why buy Vertigo if you cannae use him. So far he's assured everyone around him with no conviction that citizen Kane is ready. The reality is that Spurs start 2012 with 1 striker unwilling as they are to fill Adebags coffers to the very brim. And then there is that curious voice, as if somebody else is inside him and a ventriloquist is busy fingering away. As a newbie, his tactics already seem dated almost prehistoric. As anyone on Dorset's Jurassic Coast will know..Old Harry Rocks!

Got Vertongen in my TFF team, should I ditch him early? Problem being with Tff there are no subs...Dropped Ivanovic for him so maybe thats why i'm bitter. I thought he'd be nailed on being an AVB signing and highly rated? Would appreciate opinions.

Just seen a rumour on Soccernet (given up trying to format their URLs on here) that Spurs are trying to get Chamakh on loan from Arsenal. Jeez, that would be scraping the barrel - I'd rather have Berbatov back. Hopefully, City will reach a compromise with Adebayor on his 'severance' payment - otherwise they'll just be paying him 170k a week for doing sweet FA until January, at the earliest.

Realistically, Spurs need to acquire 2 strikers by Aug 31; otherwise, it might be a long, tough, season in the Premiership and a short one in all the other competitions.

Common sense would rule out Carroll, shirley? Why would Liverpool let him go there, when they have a chance of finishing above Spurs (if Spurs have only Defoe and Kane as forwards)..
