currently undergoing a medical.

Ajax player Vurnon Anita flew into Tyneside from Amsterdam on Wednesday to put the finishing touches on his transfer to United. Personal terms have been agreed and the formalities of a medical will now be concluded.

Reports from the Netherlands on Sunday suggested that Newcastle had agreed a fee with Ajax for Anita - with his current coach Frank De Boer confirming that the player's departure looked inevitable.

The 23 year-old Holland international was in the Ajax side who kicked off the new Dutch domestic season on Sunday with a 2-2 home draw against Alkmaar as a holding midfielder - although he has also appeared at left back.

After Sunday's game, he told journalists that:

"The clubs have a deal, I think €8.5m (£6.65m). Now I have to reach an agreement with Newcastle. I have an offer, but I cant say more about this.

"The clubs have agreed a fee, but I have not. I'm still an Ajax player. I think it will be finished soon, but you never know how it will go.

"I have played for Ajax for 13 years, it has been a great time and I am grateful to Ajax. Now it's up to me. But first I want to talk with the manager of Newcastle United before taking a decision.

"The whole picture has to be right for me."

Anita was born in the Dutch Antilles (a group of islands in the Caribbean) and moved to Holland with his family as a youngster, beginning his association with Ajax in 1999.

Making his senior club debut in 2006, a first full cap followed for Holland in 2010. With two years remaining on the deal extension he signed with Ajax in 2011, recent speculation over a move saw ourselves, the mackems and Aston Villa all mentioned.

The player looked to be hedging his bets by admitting to an ambition to appear in the Premier League, but also hinting at the temptation of a new contract with Ajax.

Last week then brought news that he'd got himself a new agent, prompting fresh speculation that he was close to exiting from Amsterdam.

Assuming this goes through, Alan Pardew will gain further central midfield cover - but in an area where he already has Cheick Tiote and rookie Gael Bigirimana.

It remains to be seen whether this marks the end of the Mathieu Debuchy pursuit, with United taking advantage of Anita's ability to play at left back by switching Davide Santon to the right back role he occupies for Italy U21s.

However, Debuchy still seems set on leaving Lille and expressed those sentiments to reporters after playing in Saturday's season-opening 2-1 win at St.Etienne.

Both Fabricio Coloccini and Papiss Cisse are expected to be available though, along with new boy Vurnon Anita. Demba Ba (shin) remains doubtful.

Yohan Cabaye, Cheick Tiote and Hatem Ben Arfa took at least some part in training on Thursday but it remains to be seen whether they are deemed fit enough to feature on Saturday.

Demba Ba confirms he is still the teams penalty taker, even though Ben Arfa took the penalty in the first game.

What price Colocinni goes on strike before the window closes, thats my hunch, for whatever reasons he has to want to go?

•Captain Fabricio Coloccini, 31, has told Newcastle he does not want to play for them again.

Skipper Coloccini vows to never play for Newcastle again
.

Thursday January 24 2013

Fabricio Coloccini is heading out of Newcastle United after he told officials he does not want to play another game for the club.

The 31-year-old captain now plans to leave Tyneside in his desire to return home to Argentina as he deals with "personal matters". Coloccini's wife is already believed to have returned to Argentina.

Talks had taken place earlier this week between Coloccini's representatives and officials from Newcastle in a bid to broker a peace deal where the central defender would stay at St James' Park until the end of the season.

However, after extensive discussions they failed to reach agreement and now the player is set to quit. In the background to all this was the vocal interest of the Argentinian side San Lorenzo, for whom Coloccini played on loan in the 2000-01 season. Coloccini's father Osvaldo works at the club.

They have not been able to find the funding to buy the player from Newcastle. Coloccini's £60,000-a-week salary is way out of their budget. They were unable to negotiate a fee for the player.

That was seen in some quarters as offering the possibility of Coloccini staying. However, the player, who first told club officials of his desire to quit Tyneside on January 10, has instead reaffirmed his decision to end his four-and-a-half years at St James' Park.

The 31-year-old was signed for £10.3m in 2008. Newcastle were relegated that season but he excelled during the following campaign and established himself as one of the most cultured central defenders in the Premier League. He signed a new contract and was voted into PFA team of the year, but the last few months have been troubled.

Coloccini does not intend to play against Aston Villa in Tuesday's crucial relegation battle at Villa Park – their next game – but Newcastle could have half a new team in place by then.
