Watched the Newgen game today against Inter away, we won 1-0 terrific result against holders, puts us in to quarters. The conditions game played in dreadful, pitch more like a swimming pool than football pitch, but couple of outstanding performances from our 2 CB's think they were Monteiro, Hajrovic (my Italian non existent) Yennaris got the goal in second half he had good game as well, do think once he gets a set position he will make it.
Wish that our first team defenders as disciplined and aware as these were, under conditions terrific performance from them, would have been so easy to make an error, work rate very good, Inter only had 1 good chance in game. Every tackle had to be disciplined in and around Pen area, for young players to be so disciplined in what to them big game very encouraging.

Just back from game against CSKA, we won 1-0, good game did make it hard for ourselves by missing so many good chances. We played a good team tonight, would like us to get there defensive coach, for sure he would be an improvement on ours, they were very disciplined whole game, while we often sloppy in our passing and lack of communicating.
First half we had most of the play but, 2 of player I rate Eisfeld and Gnabery struggled to get into game, Gnabery playing to deep, star for us was Akpom, terrific half as loan striker, if he can tighten up his passing has future, good balance and aware of how to find space, we should have been out of sight at end of half but it was 0-0.
2nd half again most of game to us and big improvement from all front 3, only surprise was we only scored the 1 (think it was Gnabery) real good move. Late in game Akpom went of with injury having been far and away best player on pitch.
Now we play Cfc on Friday in Semi, they have a very good side at mo and we will not get away with missing so many chances.
With Villa also in Semi chance of both finalists from Prem, with weather (brass monkey) tonight as it was good gate for game would think around 4,000, if weather had been better would have expected double figure gate.

Arsène Wenger has revealed the following team news ahead of Saturday's game against Norwich City:
on Wilshere and Walcott…
Jack has joined normal training since Wednesday and Theo should join in tomorrow. They are 90 per cent available for Saturday.
on other team news...
The other uncertainty we have from last Saturday is Tomas Rosicky, who has a little hamstring irritation. His involvement is yet to be decided as well but it's fair to say that he is a big doubt for Saturday. And of course, Per Mertesacker will be out because of his red card.

Not sure I would consider somebody who has been out for a little while and 'should' start training on a Friday to really be 90% available for saturday.....mikeg13 wrote:Jack has joined normal training since Wednesday and Theo should join in tomorrow. They are 90 per cent available for Saturday.

Just my opinion but the Wilshire one was as much a "convenience" injury as anything else and do expect him to play, Walcott likely (again my opinion) start on bench

Interesting whats going on at Afc regarding young players, lot been let go and it seems serious investment being made to replace.
Rumour of another import from Barca defender Julio Pleguezuelo Selva, know nothing about him.
With couple all ready with us, showing gen promise should be a very competitive group of young players.

This will please some
Andrey Arshavin, Denilson and Sebastien Squillaci will leave the Club when they come to the end of their contracts on June 30, and Arsenal would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their contribution and wish them well for the future.

Saw that on the Telegraph site under a heading claiming "Arsenal increase their financial firepower" due the reduction in wages.
Which is pretty positive spin when you consider what they cost in transfers and wages.

For arshavin read billythingyov - heitinga cost Everton a fair sum and wage and isn't doing anything - all clubs have transfers that dent work out and players they want to shift.

At least Billy and Heitinga played from time to time.
Those three have been drawing big wages for diddly squat!

Did I even mention Everton? My statement was that there was a lot of money spent for little return - and the positive spin on it was odd. Tell me if you agree or disagree by all means.Groomyd wrote:For arshavin read billythingyov - heitinga cost Everton a fair sum and wage and isn't doing anything - all clubs have transfers that dent work out and players they want to shift.
Though now you mention it we did get a fee for Billy and Heitinga was our player of the year last year. Neither really compare to Arshavin's 15M plus 85k of wages, never playing, and leaving for nowt.

Arshavin was breathtaking for a while too - and Densilson was ok - just didnt make the grade
And if you do want to see the big picture i suggest you look at Wenger's overall record in the transfer market
All clubs have deadwood - getting rid is good news for Arsenal or Everton or any club as it frees up money to use elsewhere

So even when presented with the Arshavin situation, you still can't accept that something at Arsenal went a bit wrong?
What hope have we got discussing the more debatable issues with you? You're starting to resemble Dalglynch

I thought Arshavin looked good before he joined Arsenal. It must have been the culture shock of living in London with Loadsadosh. Charlie Nicholas springs to mind. These things are hard to predict, some manage it, some don't. Arsene got it wrong with him.

For what ever reason Arshavin at end of day did not work out, thats not to say he did not have some very good moments with us.tedbull wrote:So even when presented with the Arshavin situation, you still can't accept that something at Arsenal went a bit wrong?

Allowing players to run down contracts is to me no big deal, these days. In todays game, in real world its all about money, Afc run club in a different way to just about all, player costs seem to be worked out over life of contract, while other clubs would see it as a loss at end of contract, in my view Afc see the loss in money terms at time of buying. It does lead to a very conservative approach to transfer market, but a sustainable business.
To me its only way we can hope to compete with the deep pocket clubs, we cant match there ability to write of huge loses incurred
This summer my view, first time for a fair while we are in a position to gamble on player buys and do think we will.
My hope for buys is an experienced keeper, this will allow Sz time to gain experience but not see it as a locked door to him. Another RB, sadly Sagner not player he was and in my view our back up not quite there yet. To me key signing is that mid player who understands modern game and is where our season will rise or fall on (my view) last would be either a out and out striker or one who can play as support.
Aims for season
1) finish as close to top in Prem as poss, prefer top but no lower than 4th
2) highly unlikely but can dream, win champ league
3) Take FA cup seriously min Semi prefer win it
4) win NextGen
5) win Youth cup or at least Semi
If we can get close to that list will be happy bunny

He was not really given the chance to play central, so we never saw the best of him.

Of course not - they were all pretty much disasters - Arshavin being the biggest as he remains our record buy and so much more was expected of him - the other two were back up players reallytedbull wrote:So even when presented with the Arshavin situation, you still can't accept that something at Arsenal went a bit wrong?

So you admit something went wrong but then still deny it by trying to obscure it with irrelevant reference to other clubs.Groomyd wrote:Of course not - they were all pretty much disasters - Arshavin being the biggest as he remains our record buy and so much more was expected of him - the other two were back up players reallytedbull wrote:So even when presented with the Arshavin situation, you still can't accept that something at Arsenal went a bit wrong?

I am just providing some context
So when anyone critisises a club's signings that dont work out its important to realsie that a) all clubs have them so look at how many there are elsewhere and compare and that b) you should look at a clubs total transfer performance - ie how many did work out - to see the bigger picture.

I hate to tell you this Groomy but if you were to put all the Arsenal signings of the last 5/6 years under HIT, MISS or JURY OUT, HIT would be the shortest list.

I think we have sold exceptionaly well (£125m for Toure, Nasri and Adebayor, Fabregas and RVP) and bought very well too - over the past 10 years we have a jaw dropping net spend record - our continued CL presence during years of necessary prudence simply illustrates that.Tim Bisley wrote:I hate to tell you this Groomy but if you were to put all the Arsenal signings of the last 5/6 years under HIT, MISS or JURY OUT, HIT would be the shortest list.
Meanwhile sides like Liverpool have spunked gazillions to try to get into the CL and failed to take advantage of our drop in spending power - and failed
