Middlesbrough's Austrian defender Emmanuel Pogatetz will miss the start of the season because of a knee injury
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 926653.stm
Pogatetz joins defenders Jonathan Woodgate, Robert Huth, Matthew Bates and Chris Riggott on the sidelines.
Southgate is now likely to have to start the season with David Wheater and Andrew Davies as central defenders.

You don't think Riggot might start with all the injury probs?Optimistic Boro Fan wrote:Missing best 5 centre backs, so defence picks itself. Will want good protection so Boateng + Cattermole in the middle. Downing + Tuncay + Yakubu will all start. Either Morrison or Aliadiere.
I reckon:
Schwarzer
Young
Wheater
Davies
Taylor
Downing
Boateng
Cattermole
Tuncay
Aliadiere
Yakubu

Parmos are great
Riggott is supposedly injured as well.
I would imagine a fit Arca would be in Boro's starting XI, maybe alongside Boateng in the middle.
Luke Young could always swich to centre, with Davies at RB.

He may play instead of Aliadiere.El Tel of Ealing wrote:Is there a reason for your omission of Arca?
Arca would normally play in centre midfield. However with so many central defenders injured I think Southgate will opt for caution and play Boateng and Cattermole.
If our 1st choice defence was fit, Arca would certainly play.

Trying to predict the future here but I saw this story which immediately made me think that this is much more likely than they make out.
I know it's only one player but I get the impression that that could make the difference between 'Boro ending up in near-relegation status rather than fighting for the low Euro positions.

Boro v Wigan
Injuries and suspensions
Gareth Southgate says he doesn't think Luke Young (groin) will be fit to play, while Jonathan Woodgate, Emanuel Pogatetz, Robert Huth and Matthew Bates are all longer term casualties.
Fabio Rochemback misses the game through suspension. This is the second of a three-match ban after he was sent-off in a pre-season friendly against Hertha Berlin.

Well well, what a surprise! It wasn't a particularly huge leap to guess this one esp. after Mido signed for 'Boro. Doesn't look good for them now considering the performances I've already seen. The one good thing (for my team anyway) is that Aliadiere's place looks set as Southgate is unlikely to risk having just Mido up front.DrBunker wrote:Trying to predict the future here but I saw this story which immediately made me think that this is much more likely than they make out.

What a joke, makes me worry about Jol now that he has "the full backing of the Chairman"!.

The Boro official site:
Four Give Fitness Boost For Boro
EMANUEL POGATETZ is pressing to be considered for selection against Bolton on Sunday, Robert Huth travels with the squad, while Mido and Julio Arca both have a chance of facing Aston Villa later this month.
Pogatetz and Huth both took part in the Reserves 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at the Riverside earlier this week and they will both travel to the Pennies for Sunday's game. Fellow centre-back Jonathan Woodagte is still a doubt with a hamstring problem and will undergo fitness tests. "Emanuel Pogatetz is in the squad and raring to go," reported Gareth Southgate this afternoon. "Robert Huth had an hour for the Reserves and Emanuel had 90 minutes."
Egyptian striker Mido is unlikely to be involved as he continues his recovery from a groin problem. "We're hoping he'll be ready for the Aston Villa game straight after the international break. He had an injection into the injury to try to improve the healing progress. We've had to let that settle down for a few days and now it's down to the hard work of getting fit and ready."
Arca's potential return ahead of schedule is an unexpected bonus. The Argentinian has worked tirelessly on his rehabilitation since injuring his medial ligaments against Sunderland on September 22. "Julio is running and doing light ball work," said Southgate. "Whether or not he will be ready for the Villa game remains to be seen but certainly he's ahead of where we thought he would be."

The "Boro" official site:
BORO today were dealt a fresh injury blow with the news that Mark Schwarzer is doubtful for Saturday's game at Reading. The Australian goalkeeper has damaged a thumb and although the full extent of the injury is not yet known, it is unlikely he will play at the Madejski Stadium.
Schwarzer is one of just two players, along with Stewart Downing, who have played every minute of Boro's Barclays Premier League campaign so far, but that could end this weekend. Should he not make it, then Ross Turnbull, who was on loan with Cardiff City for whom he played eight games earlier this season, would step in for his first game of the season as Schwarzer's normal deputy, Brad Jones, is also injured.

Wheater
Unfortunately for Wheater (and those of us who have him in our teams), Huth came in for him,and had a very good game alongside Woodgate, so Wheater might now have to wait a while to get back in the side. Not our Donna wrote:Thanks, grob!

The official site match preview:
Mido apart, Gareth Southgate has pretty much a full-strength squad from which to select his starting 11, with the exceptions of Julio Arca, pictured, and Lee Cattermole, who are both suspended.

The Boro official site:
THREE key players returned to training this week ahead of Saturday's trip to Blackburn Rovers but the game could come too soon for Mido. Emanuel Pogatetz was back earlier in the week after missing the Liverpool game through illness. Jonathan Woodgate, pictured, also missed that game, through injury, but he was able to join his team-mates on the training pitch today.
"He's been training and we'll assess how he is over the next 48 hours or so," said Gareth Southgate this afternoon. The manager was given a further boost with Egyptian striker Mido also returning to training. The former Spurs star has been undergoing a lengthy rehab after a pubic bone injury but had suffered a slight setback which forced him to miss his planned comeback in last week's Reserve game against Wigan. However, Southgate said: "Mido's back training, but not with the team yet so I wouldn't think he'll be available for the weekend."
In addition, Lee Cattermole has been send home from the training ground ill, leaving a question mark over his participation at the weekend. Striker Ben Hutchinson is also out after picking up a crack in his toe against Liverpool. "We're told it won't be too long, a week to ten days to settle, but they've put him on crutches to keep his weight off it," explained Southgate.
