I am going to give this a stab since no-one else seems to fancy it. Please bare in mind this is just an opinion.
Goalkeeper
Stephen Bywater the #1 with Leon Price very much the #2.
Back 4
Jay McKeveley and Tyrone Mears at full back.
Claude Davis and Darren Moore at centre back.
Andy Griffin can play left or right back.
Todd and Leacock provide cover at centreback, Mo Camara may play in midfield altho he is supposedly a leftback.
Midfield
Matt Oakley(cpt) likely to play every game he is fit.
David Jones the set piece man but lacks a good goalscoring record. Not afraid to shoot tho. Fighting for a place with Stephen Pearson in central midfield.
Gary Teale assured of a place on the wing and takes the odd set piece too.
My guess is Mo Camara may line up on the left side of midfield.
Giles Barnes provides the flair but is out until at least September.
Strikers
Steve Howard and Robert Earnshaw the 1-2. Expect Earnshaw to look to run on from Howard flick ons, Howard excels in the air, Earnshaw is pacey. A very much little and large combo which ought to be a good partnership.
Jon Macken and Craig Fagan most likely coming on regularly as subs from 60 minutes onwards in games Derby are losing or haven't scored in.

I'm no expert on County either. The AMC spot is between Pearson & Jones so it would seem.Spinynorman wrote:I'm no expert when it comes to Derby (or a few other things for that matter) but lots of folks have mentioned Pearson as a potential midfield starter although I have noticed that he hasn't featured much recently. Do you not consider him to be a starter?
I would say Jones would be first pick and it'll be up to him to keep it otherwise Pearson will be put in.

Pretty much what he said for me. Like a lot of clubs they have 2 players for every position and you could make a good case for either of them. I think Jones set peice ability might get him the nod, Pearson is fresh in peoples minds because he scored the winner in the playoffs.
Pearson could easily be in the starting XI next week, i am just making a best guess.

My thoughts on the starting XI for the Pompey game:
GK Bywater
LB McEveley / Griffin
RB Mears
CB Todd
CB Davis / Leacock
LM Pearson
RM Fagan
CM Oakley
CM Jones
CF Howard
CF Earnshaw
Although given how Billy has been mixing up the XI for friendlies, there could be several differences in the actual line-up.
FWIW, I think Pearson will be a nailed-on starter this season. Billy loves him.

I think Billy Davies thinks there's a lot more to come from Fagan, and his best game for us by far was the play-off final. Fagan is a typical Billy player - he works hard and has a bit of a temper. In pre-season he's been playing centre-forward, but I suspect he'll get the nod over Teale.sainttelstar wrote:Londonram,
Any reason why you think Fagan over Teale?
I apologise if I'm wrong, but I certainly don't think Teale is going to be a guaranteed starter this season at all.

Left midfield slot conundrum could be solved, plenty of reports altho not yet on the official website of the following.
BREAKING NEWS: VAYRYNEN SET TO SIGN FOR RAMS
Finland winger Mika Vayrynen is close to signing for Derby County.
The Rams agreed terms with PSV Eindhoven for the 25-year-old left-sided player.
Vayrynen was one of five targets first revealed in Tuesday's Derby Evening Telegraph.
He is not eligible to play in tomorrow's Premier League curtain-raiser against Portsmouth.

Derby's official site:
TODD TO UNDERGO MORE SCANS
Posted on: Fri 09 Nov 2007
Andy Todd will undergo an MRI scan as his back and hamstring injuries continue to cause him difficulties. The 33-year-old has been training in recent weeks but has continually been troubled by an issue that just won't go away. He last played for the first-team on September 1 and has visited a spinal specialist this week. "We are now moving on to MRI scans to try and sort it because a 100 per cent fit Andy Todd can be a big asset," said Rams boss Billy Davies. Todd will definitely be absent at the weekend when Derby host West Ham ahead of the international break.
Claude Davis is a doubt with his abductor muscle strain, while striker Kenny Miller has returned to training after a hamstring injury. "Kenny has trained for the last couple of days and is looking sharper," Davies said. "It is nice to see him back on the training ground but he is still touch and go for the weekend."

And another article a few hours later:Hossam Ghaly is in line to make his Derby debut against Wigan Athletic at Pride Park Stadium on Saturday. But the Rams are still awaiting confirmation of international clearance for Laurent Robert, who signed a short-term deal earlier this week, while there is currently no news on the progress of talks with Rangers keeper Roy Carroll.
Laurent Robert is clear to make his Derby County debut after the Rams were granted international clearance for the French winger. Robert, 32, put pen to paper earlier this week on a deal that will keep him at Pride Park until the end of the season. He spoke of how eager he was to get his Derby career up and running and now he is free to do so after the relevant paperwork arrived on Friday afternoon. Robert, who will wear shirt number 26, is available to Rams boss Paul Jewell for tomorrow's game with Wigan Athletic.

Derby have been dealt an injury blow with news that Giles Barnes will miss Saturday's game with Sunderland. The teenager picked up a knee injury in training on Wednesday and has been ruled out of the visit of the Black Cats by boss Paul Jewell. "Giles unfortunately got injured in training yesterday and won't be available for Saturday," Jewell confirmed. [...]
Back on the injury front, Dean Leacock's fitness is still causing concern. The defender failed to re-appear after half-time in last week's defeat at Wigan Athletic following an accidental collision with Robbie Savage. "Dean has done a bit of running with the physio this morning and we will have to assess him on Friday," Jewell said.

We have to rely on the local rag this week:
Alan Stubbs is out of today's home game against Manchester United and could be sidelined for two or three weeks. The 36-year-old limped off after only 16 minutes of the midweek defeat at Chelsea due a calf injury. "He's pulled his calf and it might be two or three weeks, which is a blow because he has been terrific for us since he's been here," said Jewell. Dean Leacock came on as a substitute for Stubbs and could start alongside Darren Moore against United.

The official site:
Derby boss Paul Jewell expects defender Alan Stubbs to be sidelined for two or three weeks with the calf injury he picked up at Chelsea. Goalkeeper Roy Carroll should be fit to face Middlesbrough after picking up a slight groin problem against Manchester United, while midfielder Stephen Pearson has seen a specialist about his hernia problem.

While Alan Stubbs looks set to miss out on a return to Goodison Park because of a calf injury, long-term injury victim Giles Barnes could be an absentee at the start of the 2008-09 campaign. Better news for Paul Jewell is that Scotland pair Jay McEveley and Kenny Miller should be available for Sunday's game at Everton after recovering from dead-legs. However Stubbs, who would have loved to have been involved at his former club, looks unlikely to recover in time from a calf injury picked up in the game at Chelsea three weeks ago.
Meanwhile, it is still unclear whether teenager Barnes, who has returned to the UK after knee surgery in the States performed by world renowned specialist Dr Richard Steadman, will need a follow-up operation. [...] Barnes was the fourth Derby player expected to see his season end prematurely following absences for loanee Danny Mills, and defenders Tyrone Mears and Claude Davis. Mears, however, made a surprise comeback as a substitute against Fulham having recovered sooner than expected from an operation on his left shin.

Boss Paul Jewell rates Robbie Savage, Tito Villa and Dean Leacock as "60-40 in our favour" as they battle for fitness. Aussie ace Mile Sterjovski is a bigger doubt with an achilles problem, though Alan Stubbs is back in the reckoning. Tyrone Mears is also pushing for a start after coming back from his shin injury with substitute appearances in the last two games.

Paul Jewell is hopeful that he will have Mile Sterjovski and Marc Edworthy available for Saturday's trip to West Ham United. The gaffer confirmed on Tuesday morning that they had returned to training after achilles and rib injuries respectively. Sterjovski was replaced during the second half of April 6's defeat Everton while Edworthy's last outing was on March 15 against Manchester United - his 500th career appearance.
