Newcastle have opened talks with French champions Lyon over the transfer of their former captain Claudio Cacapa.
The Brazilian defender announced at the end of last season he would quit the Stade Gerland after having spent six highly successful seasons there.
Magpies boss Sam Allardyce is looking to reinforce his back line further after managing to capture just David Rozenhal and Geremi so far this summer and is hopeful a deal for the 31-year-old can be sealed.

Seems Given was due a scan yesterday(Monday) on his injury.

Big Sam rates Luque and was trying to sign him for Bolton.TheTonArmy wrote:Looks like Newcastle are stuck with Luque for a bit longer.
Toon fans pleased about that or not . Scored goals in pre-season 2 years running - any chance Big Sam will give him a go.

SHAY Given is expected to be fit for Ireland’s crucial European Championship qualifiers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic next month despite missing Newcastle’s opening Premiership games with a groin injury.
Irish boss Stephen Staunton told the Irish Independent, “Shay is a lot better than we were first told. I thought we were going to lose him for the two games in September but it’s looking as if he’ll be ok.
“Then again, it’s a muscle injury and we’ll take nothing for granted so we’ll just have to wait and see. Once you start picking up injuries in any area and it’s a recurrence, you’ve got that possibility it will continue to happen.”

I would not read too much into his contract situation, he has said that he wants to play for his hometown club and has no intention of leaving, however it is in his intrest to get the best contract he can.12th man wrote:By the looks of this thread, there aren't many FISOer's who are Toon fans!
I suspect it just case of negotiating the best contract at this early stage.

SENEGAL defender Lamine Diatta is determined to do all he can to help steer Newcastle United away from the threat of relegation after penning a short-term deal at St.James' Park. The 32-year-old joins the Magpies with just nine games of the season left to play having left former club Besiktas earlier this year.
