Wigan Land African Star

It has emerged that Wigan Athletic have completed a deal that will see Egyptian international Amr Zaki come to the Premier League.

Steve Bruce was present at a Zamalek league game towards the end of last season, where Zaki scored twice, and was said to be sufficiently persuaded to pay 6 million pounds for the attacker.

Zaki was hugely impressive in his country’s Africa Cup Of Nations triumph this year, where he was an integral member of the starting XI.

The 25 year old had previously been on the books of Russian giants Lokomotiv Moscow but failed to make a single appearance.

He has however, been hugely impressive for Zamalek since signing in 2006 where he has netted 22 times in 54 appearances. He has also a formidable international scoring record; 21 goals in 40 caps, including two Africa Cup Of Nations semi final goals - in 2006 and 2008.

The deal will be seen as a considerable coup for Bruce and Wigan; Zaki comes with the reputation of being one of the best African strikers still playing on the continent.

It is expected that the deal will be confirmed later this week.

Camara and Granqvist to exit Wigan

Wigan Athletic look ready to offload out on loan Henri Camara and Andreas Granqvist.
Both players have been away from Wigan on loan, with Camara at West Ham and Granqvist back home in Sweden with Helsingborgs.
Neither are likely to feature in Bruce's plans for next season and getting them off the wage bill would create room for new signings.

Camara is being eyed by French side Marseille but the speedy striker would prefer to stay in the Premier League.

Holland could be the destination for centre-half Granqvist who is in
Sweden's squad for Euro 2008, with Groningen having run the rule over him during his loan time at Helsingborgs.

Two other players who were loaned out by Latics last season, Carlo Nash and David Cotterill, could also be heading for the exit door.
Bruce has previously said he wouldn't stand in their way if Stoke and Sheffield United, respectively, wanted to sign the pair permanently.

Bruce forced to wait for Zaki

Latics are having to play a waiting game in their bid to sign Egyptian striker Amr Zaki.
Steve Bruce is hoping to sign the 25-year-old on loan for next season with a view to a permanent £6m transfer in 12 months' time.
But Zaki's club Zamalek are not willing to let him leave until they have found a replacement, something they are struggling to do.

Zamalek have promised Latics a definite answer on whether a deal can be done by June 22, two-and-a-half weeks before the start of
pre-season training.

........

Latics have other striking targets and even if Zaki signs, there could be other arrivals up front as Bruce plots to make Latics stronger next season.
A name in the frame again is Motherwell's Ross McCormack, who held talks with the club in January about a possible summer switch.
He has come to the end of his contract at Fir Park now and has set his sights on a move to England.

But Bruce's interest did cool after watching McCormack in action, and it remains to be seen whether he enters the bidding.

Wigan sign Dutch winger De Ridder

Wigan Athletic have signed Dutch winger Daniel de Ridder after he was released by Birmingham City on Monday.
It is the second time that De Ridder, 24, has signed for Steve Bruce after he took him to St Andrews last summer.
Wigan boss Bruce said: "Daniel is an exciting player and I'm convinced he can make an impact. He has very quick feet and can pull off the unexpected."
The ex-Holland Under-21 international has signed a three-year deal and Bruce expects further new signings to follow.
"It's clear we need to bring one or two new faces this summer and we are currently chasing several targets," he said. "Watch this space!"
De Ridder added: "When a manager says he wants you for his team it is very flattering, especially when it is a big team like Wigan who are now well established in the Premier League."

Meanwhile the Kapo story seems to be gathering pace...

Bruce 'preparing bid for Kapo'

Olivier Kapo is trying to force a move to Latics after failing to return to pre-season training at Birmingham.
The French midfielder, 27, was due back at the Blues' training ground on Wednesday, but faces the wrath of boss Alex McLeish following his no-show.
Kapo wants to follow his former St Andrews team-mate Daniel De Ridder – Wigan's first summer signing - to the JJB Stadium.
And Steve Bruce, who signed him from Juventus for £3m last summer, is hopeful of striking a deal by offering Antoine Sibierski as part of the transfer.
