Injury news

Stephen McManus is facing a race against time to be fit for Wednesday night's Champions League tie with Milan. He limped out of Saturday's match against doomed hatchet men Dunfermline. With Caldwell and Baldé still out and Pressley cup-tied, we've only one central defender left, 20-year-old Darren O'Dea. Image. There are rumours that Gary Caldwell or John Kennedy might return. However, Kennedy hasn't played a first-team game in years and Caldwell hasn't played at any level in months. Again, Image.

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink's dodgy hamstring seems to have survived 30 minutes against the talentless Fife cluggers. Craig Beattie's even dodgier hamstring also appears to have survived intact.

Shunsuke Nakamura was subject to a violent, mistimed tackle by a Dunfermline 'footballer' in the first few minutes and was given thuggish treatment throughout, but he's tougher than he looks! Mark Wilson missed the game against Dunfermline and hasn't looked impressive since returning for injury. It's hard to tell whether he or Paul Telfer will start at the San Siro.

the daily mail (no, I'm not providing a link) is reporting that Mark Wilson will return after a slight knee problem kept him out of the Dunfermline game. It also repeats last night's news (apparently in the evening times, but I can't find the article) that Stephen McManus has declared himself fit.

AC MILAN… 1
(Kaka 93)
CELTIC…0

UEFA Champions League
First Knockout Round
Wednesday, March 7, 2007
Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, Milan

Perhaps unsurprisingly, we're out of Europe. Got exactly as far as most Celtic fans expected and further than most non-Celts expected. More surprising was our two clean sheets. The defence was generally excellent, although we did have a little bit of luck and a fantastic keeper to thank for keeping Milan at bay. Going forward we created less than is usually necessary to win these sorts of games. Should've had a penalty early on, but that was as close as it got sadly.

Celticfc.net match report

Glenn Gibbons in the Scotsman

AC MILAN (4-4-2) Dida; Oddo (Simic 117), Bonera, Maldini, Jankulovski; Gattuso (Brocchi 79), Pirlo, Ambrosini, Seedorf; Kaka, Inzaghi (Gilardino 72).
Subs: Kalac, Oliviera, Favalli, Gourcuff.
CELTIC (4-5-1) Boruc; Telfer, McManus, O’Dea, Naylor; Nakamura (Miller 116), Sno (Beattie 98), Lennon, Jarosik (Gravesen 62); McGeady, Vennegoor of Hesselink.
Subs: Brown, Wilson, Riordan, Kennedy.

Very unlucky to be out, you should have had a penalty! You certainly give Milan a fright.

Now for the big game on Sunday, I am no wishing you luck for that one

Aye, well alright, we did need a bit of luck. Shame we didn't get it, but then it is only our first home league defeat for sixteen months...

Did I mention we should've had at least two penalties in that match? No, oh well, mustn't grumble.....

Maciej Zurawski (remember him?) is said to be "ready to return to action" according to the Evening Times after a long-term calf injury.

Rumours that Kenny Miller caused the injury with a stringed instrument are thought to be unfounded. Kenny couldn't hit a cow with a banjo, never mind a calf.

Injury, suspension, and squid-related news

The official site is proclaiming the news that Thomas Gravesen has recovered from an unnamed injury we never knew he had.

Meanwhile Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Paul Telfer have short-term injuries. Make of that what you will :?.

The keen-eyed amongst you may have noticed the reappearance of both John Kennedy and Gary Caldwell on the subs list in recent games :D.

Paul Hartley returns from his suspension for Sunday's game with Falkirk.

Giant squid have been known to hold their own in fights with whales.

FALKIRK... 1
(Thomson 16)
CELTIC... 0

Scottish Premierleague
Saturday, March 18, 2007
Falkirk Stadium, er, Falkirk

Awful. Just bloody awful. If Miller and Beattie never play for Celtic again it will be too soon. Lennon had another hissy-fit.

Teams and such-like to follow, if I have the will for it

Stephen 'Mick' McManus is suspended for tomorrow's lunchtime kick-off with Dundee United. Evander Sno injured his knee while with the Dutch u21 side. He will miss about a month.

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink should return to the starting line-up, but teamtalk reports that both right-backs Paul Telfer and Mark Wilson are likely to miss the match, so we may see January signing Jean-Joel Perrier-Doumbe for the first time. More likely, Paul Hartley will be shifted to right-back.

DUNDEE UNITED…1
(Daly 90)
CELTIC…1
(Nakamura 48)

Scottish Premierleague
Saturday, March 31, 2007
Tannadice Park, Dundee

A late, thoroughly deserved, equalizer for Dundee United; another excellent freekick by Shunsuke Nakamura. We're limping towards a second consecutive title - we haven't scored from open play in what seems like an eternity - but we'll make it.

Also worth noting that Gary Caldwell made his return after injury, playing right-back.

Celticfc.net report

DUNDEE UNITED (4-5-1) Stillie; Dillon, Wilkie, McCracken, Duff; Kerr, Gomis (Goodwillie 76), Robson, Robb (Cameron 80), Samue (Easton 87); Daly
Subs not used: McLean, Gardiner, Easton, McCord, Andreoni

CELTIC (4-4-2) Boruc; Caldwell, Pressley, O’Dea, Naylor; Nakamura, Lennon, Hartley, McGeady; Vennegoor of Hesselink, Beattie (Zurawski 61)
Subs not used: Brown, Riordan, Gravesen, Doumbe, Kennedy, Sheridan

Paul Telfer leaves Celtic

DEFENDER Paul Telfer has left Celtic for family reasons. The 35-year-old, who played his last game for the Hoops against AC Milan in the San Siro Stadium, had been struggling with a groin injury in recent weeks and didn’t feature in Celtic’s three most recent league matches.

All the best Paul, by no means the worst fullback to grace the hoops (by no means the best either, but this isn't the time for such talk)

Celtic v Motherwell, sat, 3pm

Stephen McManus will serve the second of his three-match ban. Jiri Jarosik and Kenny Miller will return from injury. New pre-contract signing Scott McDonald will not play against his future club. Motherwell are otherwise completely devoid of talent, but as we haven't scored from open play in about a month, we might still struggle against them.

Haha, yes very good. Actually, I've let the last three games slip as they were meaningless . I might put something on about the Cup Final though.

I'm sure we'll get more of a challenge out of you next season. The close season is going to be interesting as both teams need to rebuild.
