Glenn Roeder is keeping his cards close to his chest ahead of Saturday's clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Roeder was starting his preparations for the game at the training ground this morning after seeing all of his international players report back for club duty, and he will have to check on the fitness of several key players before naming his team. One player who will come into contention for a return to action is Shay Given, who played for 90 minutes as the Republic of Ireland beat San marino on Wednesday night, but the manager wouldn't say whether he will be thrown back into the starting line up.

Roeder told Newcastle World TV: "It's nice to have Shay Given fit again, and that's all I'm prepared to say. The most important thing was to get Shay fit. Steve Harper has been doing a fantastic job for us, bearing in mind he has been playing with an injury himself. It's nice to have Shay fit again and we will include him in the squad.

"We don't know if Stephen Carr is going to be fit, but I won't be giving any clues away. We have a few players who are carrying knocks, and we will check on them over the next couple of days. Perhaps all of them will make it, but we will need some of them to make it."

Titus Bramble has softened the blow of Celestine Babayaro's latest strain by declaring himself fit for the trip to Arsenal at the weekend.

Bramble trained for the first time in almost two weeks yesterday and is expected to return to the centre of defence alongside Craig Moore at the Emirates Stadium. That would mean Peter Ramage playing at left back, with Steven Taylor on standby to play on the right if Stephen Carr has not recovered from the toe injury which forced a premature end to his involvement against Manchester City last weekend.

Bramble's contract runs out at the end of the season, but while it does not look as though the 25-year-old is going to be given a new one, he remains Glenn Roeder's first-choice centre half despite some high-profile mistakes this season. For his part, Bramble has refused to hide after his early-season lapses and has told Roeder he will continue to give his all for the team and has not given up hope of landing a new deal at St James's Park.

United's meagre defensive resources are almost at breaking point and an injury to any of the four defenders who will play in Newcastle's first visit to Arsenal's new stadium would be a disaster for everyone except the 19-year-old Paul Huntington. The Carlisle-born centre back, a 6ft 3inch graduate from the Academy, has not managed a single first-team appearance for United, but has been on the bench a handful of times and is the next in line for the senior team if Roeder suffers more injury problems.

Babayaro, who has managed just 59 appearances since a £1m move from Chelsea in January 2005 because of injury, will be missing for at least a fortnight with a groin problem and Olivier Bernard has picked up a hip injury before he has even managed to regain match fitness following his free transfer return to the club in August...

Michael Owen is optimistic that he will be back in a black and white shirt before the end of the season.

The striker has been out of action since injuring his knee in the World Cup back in June, and after having two operations in the USA it was initially assumed that the Magpies' record signing would be out for the full season. But while Owen is not making any targets in terms of naming a date, he has admitted that he is maing good progress and could be in action before the campaign draws to a close.

Owen said: "You don't want to create a false belief so when I first had it done I thought you might as well write the season off, and everyone else did as well, but the operation was great. The surgeon was happy with what he saw inside my knee and sees no reason, as long as I have a good rehabilitation, to think there will be any future damage. I would love to play again this season. How long I play - and that is the big question - until I step up my programme, is impossible to tell. Certainly you have got to have a target when you are down in the gym every day, and my target is to play again this season."

Talking about his rehabilitation, Michael went on: "I'm still in the gym, and I shall be for quite a while yet obviously. I'm rowing, I'm on the bike, I'm walking on an incline on the treadmill and I'm swimming so that is probably the case for another four weeks, then we will start picking things up gradually. I've got have a scan as well, that's in December or early January, and as long as they say the bone is knitting together with the graft then we can push on. Round the turn of the year will be the important bit, and then it will be all systems go for a return."

Arsenal 1-1 NewU

Newcastle United picked up a well deserved point against Arsenal on their first visit to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Kieron Dyer marked his first start since April with a great goal in the first half, curling the ball past Jens Lehmann from the edge of the box to give the Magpies the lead at the interval. But Thierry Henry came off the bench at the start of the second half, and he got his side back into the game with a superb free kick 20 minutes from time.

There was no doubt that Arsenal were the stronger team throughout the 90 minutes and had the better chances, but every player in a black and white shirt gave their all to gain a point that is sure to raise the confidence after a disappointing few results...

...Glenn Roeder made no fewer than six changes from the side that drew at Manchester City last weekend for the tough trip to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal. Shay Given returned in goal at the expense of Steve Harper, making his first appearance for the Magpies since being injured at West Ham back in September.

Titus Bramble returned to the heart of the back four, meaning Steven Taylor moved across to right back with Stephen Carr out with a foot injury. Emre was suspended so his place in the engine room went to Nicky Butt, while Nobby Solano came in at the expense of James Milner and Obafemi Martins and Kieron Dyer were in the starting line-up in place of Shola Ameobi and Antoine Sibierski.

Newcastle United pair Damien Duff and Craig Moore will await the results of scans after picking up injuries during the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Saturday.

Irish international Duff, who put in a great shift helping out the defence from the left flank at the Emirates Stadium, was replaced four minutes from time and left North London nursing a sore knee. Aussie centre-back Moore, meanwhile, limped off in the final minute after appearing the damage a hamstring. Boss Glenn Roeder said: "Both will have scans but until we have the results it's too early to say anything more."

With Celestine Babayaro (groin) and Stephen Carr (toe) also in the treatment room, the Magpies are running short of defensive personnel, presenting the Magpies' manager with a possible selection dilemma ahead of Thursday's UEFA Cup clash with Celta Vigo at St. James' Park.

Newcastle United are sweating on the fitness of their £5m man Damien Duff after Saturday's gritty draw with Arsenal.

Along with central defender Craig Moore, Duff will have a scan tomorrow which will reveal just how long he is going to be sidelined. If, as expected, Moore is ruled out then United will only have THREE fit defenders for Thursday's UEFA Cup tie with Celta Vigo at St James' Park - Titus Bramble, Steven Taylor and Peter Ramage.

Glenn Roeder, who must be wondering just how many more injuries United are going to suffer refused to talk about how long Duff and Moore will be out today. But he did say: "Duff and Moore will both have scans tomorrow when the swelling goes down on their injuries and if I was to say how long we will be without them I would be only guessing."

My reading of the situation, though, is that at best, Duff will be out for a fortnight but if the scan reveals any cartilage damage it will be around six weeks. Certainly the Republic of Ireland international could hardly walk when he left the Emirates Stadium on Saturday night. Moore looked a lot better after being substituted in the last couple of minutes with what everyone could see was hamstring trouble.

Added Roeder: "To be honest, while it is a case of wait and see, Craig Moore looks as though he will definitely miss our UEFA Cup tie on Thursday. Celestine Babayaro is not under consideration for Celta Vigo or Portsmouth on Sunday, and while Stephen Carr is making good progress from his toe injury it is debatable whether he will be ready for Thursday."

To add to United's woes Olivier Bernard has a hip injury and as a result he is unlikely to ever wear the black-and-white shirt again.

Newcastle United's goalkeeper Steve Harper faces an operation. icNewcastle reports:

United head out to Frankfurt next Wednesday for the final Group H UEFA Cup game with Eintracht the following night, and Harper is expected to stay in Germany to see the same top surgeon that operated on Alan Shearer last year.

The 31-year-old - who had a run of 12 games in the Newcastle side during Shay Given's absence - has performed magnificently despite carrying a groin injury, and no praise is high enough for United's longest-serving player.

United boss Glenn Roeder told me today: "Now that Shay Given is back in the swing of things this will allow Steve Harper to have a minor groin operation sooner rather than later, maybe even next week.

The Sun reports that Damien Duff may need an op as well, that defender Craig Moore has torn a hamstring and that Shola Ameobi's op went well but he is definitely out for the rest of the season:

Boss Glenn Roeder said: “Damien’s going to see a knee specialist who’s already seen the scans of the knee. He’ll decide whether he needs a small operation or not.

“If he did need one it would be to remove a small part of the cartilage and he’d be out for a period of time.

“Sometimes you operate, sometimes you put it off.”

Defender Craig Moore also faces several weeks out after suffering a hamstring tear in the same game.

Roeder added: “He has a history of doing that hamstring and he’s out for a period of time. It’s a problem we can do without."

Shola Ameobi is beginning his rehabilitation after undergoing hip surgery in Colorado.

The Toon forward will be out for the rest of the season but Roeder is delighted the operation has been a success.

He said: “Shola has had his operation in Colorado and the specialist is very pleased with the results.”

NewU 1-0 Pompey

Antoine Sibierski turned out to be Newcastle's supersub after netting the only goal of the game to give the Magpies three points against Portsmouth at St. James' Park on Sunday.

Sibierski came on in first half stoppage time after James Milner was injured, and he netted his fifth goal for the club - his first in the Premiership - when he tapped in a low cross from Charles N'Zogbia.

Newcastle played well throughout the 90 nminutes against the high-flying visitors, and were well worth their victory though Glenn Roeder will have been disappointed to see Milner, Scott Parker and N'Zogbia all pick up injuries...

...Glenn Roeder made three changes to the side that beat Celta Vigo in the UEFA Cup on Thursday for Sunday's Premiership duel with Portsmouth at St. James' Park.

Skipper Scott Parker returned in midfield, with Nicky Butt making way, while Kieron Dyer and Obafemi Martins came into the side at the expense of Albert Luque and Antoine Sibierski, who led the line on Thursday evening. With Steve Harper out injured, former Portsmouth goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek was on the bench as cover for Shay Given.

Newcastle United: Shay Given, Nobby Solano, Titus Bramble, Steven Taylor, Peter Ramage, James Milner (Antoine Sibierski 45), Emre, Scott Parker (Nicky Butt 24), Charles N'Zogbia, Kieron Dyer, Obafemi Martins Subs (not used): Pavel Srnicek, Albert Luque, Paul Huntington

Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder will be sweating on the fitness of three key players ahead of Thursday's UEFA Cup clash with Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany.

Roeder saw Scott Parker, James Milner and Charles N'Zogbia pick up injuries in the 1-0 win over Portsmouth, and they join Craig Moore and Damien Duff in the treatment room after that pair were crocked at Arsenal last weekend.

Roeder said: "Scott Parker pulled a back muscle and had to come off, so that has to make him doubtful for the UEFA Cup trip to Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday. James Milner took a hefty blow to his hip, though I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it for Thursday. And Charles N'Zogbia took a nasty blow to his shinbone which might clear up over the next three or four days. Those injuries, and the ones that Craig and Duffer picked up last week, are the downsides to what has been an otherwise excellent week for us. The biggest concern at the moment is keeping enough players fit. There won't be another Premiership squad operating with just 10 or 11 players."

Fit-again Newcastle United midfielder Kieron Dyer has told Glenn Roeder to count him in for the club's push up the Barclays Premiership table.

The 27-year-old has shown in his two games since returning from a six-month injury lay-off just what the Magpies have been missing. It was his goal at Arsenal which secured a precious 1-1 draw, and the pace and guile he injected into his side inspired Sunday's even more important 1-0 victory over Portsmouth. Antoine Sibierski’s first Barclays Premiership strike for the club delivered a first league win in 10 attempts and their first at St James’ Park since the opening day of the season.

The Magpies will head for their UEFA Cup clash with Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night defending a five-game unbeaten run with Dyer unlikely to be involved after he suffered a nasty gash to his thigh as he collided with advertising hoardings during the game. However, after finally shaking off the hamstring problems which at one stage threatened his career, he is ready to reward the club for its patience with him.

He said: “I knew the barrier was coming and I caught it at the wrong angle. I slit my leg open, but it was never going to keep me off the pitch. There were no stitches, it is just really deep. I needed it cleaned out and a piece of skin removed. Hopefully it will clear up. I don’t think I will feature against Frankfurt but I expect to be playing in our next Premiership match against Reading at St James’ Park a week on Wednesday. For me, it is one step at a time, but if it was not for the injuries, I would be up for playing against Frankfurt. My hamstrings are not in my mind anymore. I showed at the end I was still running and that is a good sign. I feel strong and I just want to play...”

Newcastle United boss Glenn Roeder says skipper Scott Parker and Kieron Dyer will not be part of the Magpies squad that wings its way to Germany tomorrow ahead of Thursday's UEFA Cup tie with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Parker was substituted in Sunday's 1-0 Premiership victory over Portsmouth with a back injury, and a scan later revealed a strained muscle. Dyer, meanwhile, suffered nasty lacerations to his left leg after crashing into an advertising board in the second-half of that game at St. James' Park.

United are already assured of their place in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup, but a point in Frankfurt would secure top spot in Group H and a more favourable draw when the tournament reverts to a knockout format in February. However, Roeder also knows Newcastle's next league game - the visit of Reading to Gallowgate on Wednesday, December 6 - is of huge importance and will expect his England flier to be in top condition for that fixture.

Giving an injury update, he said: "Scott Parker has had a scan on his back and it has shown he has a strained muscle. While it is difficult to say how long he will be out of action he will not be with us in Frankfurt. Kieron Dyer will not be going to Germany either. His leg was so bad with lacerations that he spent Sunday night in hospital having the wound cleaned, and there is no way he will be able to play in Frankfurt on Thursday night."

Newcastle have been desperately unlucky with injuries this season. Michael Owen (knee) and Shola Ameobi (hip) are long-term absentees after surgery, while Damien Duff has recently required a cartilage operation and Roeder has also been without experienced intrernational defensive trio Stephen Carr (toe), Celestine Babayaro (groin) and Craig Moore (hamstring). Against Pompey, James Milner (hip) and Charles N'Zogbia (shin) were also forced to limp out of the action, but the gaffer says he will wait before naming his squad to travel to Germany.

Fraser Forster will be on the subs bench as Shay Given's understudy for Newcastle United's UEFA Cup match with Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

While the Magpies get ready to travel to Germany on Wednesday morning, goalkeeper Steve Harper flew out early to Munich on Monday morning where it was confirmed that he will require a double hernia operation. And with Tim Krul - United's hero in Palermo - recovering after a cartilage operation and Pavel Srnicek not registered to play in Europe, that leaves Forster as sole cover for Given.

Glenn Roeder said: "Fraser Forster will be on the bench to cover for Shay Given on Thursday night. Steve Harper is already in Germany and while we would like to have waited until after Thursday's match for him to have his operation, he has a double hernia and the medical experts have advised us that he should have his operation as soon as possible. That means that all three of our keepers, Shay Given, Steve Harper and Tim Krul, will have had operations this season - and we are still only in November."

Nolberto Solano says he's happy to continue as a stand-in right-back for Glenn Roeder as Newcastle United aim to maintain their recent unbeaten run.

The Magpies travel to Germany tomorrow in preparation for Thursday's UEFA Cup tie with Eintracht Frankfurt looking to make it six games without a defeat in all competitions. A toe injury sustained by Stephen Carr in the 1-1 draw at Arsenal has seen Solano drop back into defence in a right-back role for the recent home wins over Celta Vigo and Portsmouth - a job he has previously performed for his country Peru. And he's happy to remain Mr Versatile for the boss as United battle on against a lengthy injury list.

He said: "I try to do my best. The more important thing is I help the team to win games. Everybody has to have this mentality to win games and move away from this horrible position."

Newcastle United have been left counting the cost of their busy and injury-hit start to the season when no fewer than 12 players were in the club's treatment room today. And the unlucky 13th is keeper Steve Harper who, as The Chronicle revealed on Thursday, has gone to Germany for a hernia operation.

Long-term injury victims Michael Owen, Shola Ameobi, Craig Moore, Damien Duff, Tim Krul and Olivier Bernard were joined in the treatment room today by skipper Scott Parker and fellow midfielders James Milner and Charles N'Zogbia, who all had to be substituted in Sunday's victory over Portsmouth at St James' Park. And the Chronicle can reveal today that Kieron Dyer's gashed leg was so bad that he had to spent Sunday night in hospital having the wound cleaned, meaning the little midfielder will not be on the plane when United fly to Germany tomorrow for Thursday's final Group H UEFA Cup match with Eintracht Frankfurt at the Commerzbank Arena. However, Dyer won't be the only one missing when United's specially-chartered Excel Airways 737 leaves Newcastle tomorrow.

Glenn Roeder told me today: "Scott Parker has had a scan on his back and it has shown he has a strained muscle. While it is difficult to say how long he will be out of action he will not be with us in Frankfurt. Kieron Dyer will not be going to Germany either. His leg was so bad with lacerations that he spent Sunday night in hospital having the wound cleaned, and there is no way he will be able to play in Frankfurt on Thursday night. Steve Harper is already in Germany, and while we would like to have waited until after Thursday's match for him to have his operation, he has a double hernia and the medical experts have advised us that he should have his operation as soon as possible. This means that all our three keepers, Shay Given, Tim Krul and Shay Given, will all have had big operations this season - and we are still only in November. We have had six players having had major operations so far.

"It also means that for the second trip into Europe we will have a teenage keeper with us in the shape of Fraser Forster, who will be on the bench tro cover for Shay Given on Thursday night. But my take on injuries is always that if a player is missing then it gives someone else a chance - and everybody knows what happened to Tim Krul in our last trip aboard to Palermo."

The only good news on the injury front for Roeder is that Celestine Babayaro, the club's only recognised left-back, returned to training today after picking up a groin injury in the Carling Cup victory at Watford on November 7. But Thursday will come too soon for the Nigerian international and next Wednesday's Premiership match with Reading at St James' Park is the earliest he will be back.

Roeder expects N'Zogbia, who has a badly bruised shin after a crunching but fair tackle by Sol Campbell, to be available for Thursday, but says it is "touch and go" whether Milner, who was substituted just before half-time on Sunday with a hip injury, will travel to Germany...

Steve Harper has set his sights on a return to the Newcastle United picture by the end of the year.

The 31-year-old keeper flew back to Tyneside on Thursday night on the United plane returning from Frankfurt after undergoing a double hernia operation in Germany. And he immediately set his sights on at least being back on the bench by the time United go to Everton on December 30.

Harper was still walking rather gingerly at the Commerzbank Arena, but he told me: "I'm on the mend now. I had one operation Tuesday lunchtime and the other on Wednesday morning. The place was fantastic - you just had to look at all the pictures on the walls of the sportsmen they've operated on, including my pal Alan Shearer."

With Pavel Srnicek not available at the moment in Europe for United and Tim Krul still nursing a knee injury, it would have seemed sensible to wait until after Thursday's match with Eintracht Frankfurt for Harper to have his double operation. But Harper added: "I sat on the bench for the Celta Vigo game in the UEFA Cup and it was a struggle then. I'd have got through 10-20 minutes if needed, but I had reached the end of the road. I couldn't hold out any longer. I suffered the problem in the last couple of minutes against Manchester United at Old Trafford and it just deteriorated from then on. I tried to play on for as long as I could. The club doctor told me Rab Douglas had a double hernia during his time at Celtic and was back within a month, so I'll try and shave a bit of time off that. Hopefully, I'll be back for the games between Christmas and New Year. I don't enjoy being in the treatment room, so I'll get out there as quick as I can."

EINTRACT FRANKFURT 0 NEWCASTLE UNITED 0

Newcastle United guaranteed top spot in Group H after picking up a point from a gutsy display in the Commerzbank Arena.

The Magpies were put under long spells of pressure by Eintracht Frankfurt, but they defended well to record their sixth clean sheet in their last 10 games. Newcastle's best opportunities came in the second half, with Antoine Sibierski seeing a header from Obafemi Martins' cross hacked off the line by Sotirios Kyrgiakos, and then goalkeeper Markus Proll made a good save to deny Emre near the end.

With their four group games now played, the Magpies' total of 10 points cannot be beaten and they will therefore avoid one of the Champions League drop-outs when the draw for the knockout stages is made in two weeks time...Glenn Roeder made three changes to the team that beat Portsmouth on Sunday for the UEFA Cup clash with Eintracht Frankfurt. Skipper Scott Parker failed to shake off a back injury so Nicky Butt took his place in the engine room, while Obafemi Martins and Kieron Dyer were replaced by Albert Luque and Antoine Sibierski. Martins was on the bench, along with six Academy products with several first team regulars missing through injury.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Shay Given, Nobby Solano, Titus Bramble, Steven Taylor, Peter Ramage, James Milner, Emre, Nicky Butt, Charles N'Zogbia, Antoine Sibierski, Albert Luque (Obafemi Martins 59) Subs (not used): Paul Huntington, Matty Pattison, Andy Carroll, David Edgar, James Troisi, Fraser Forster

Newcastle United will travel to Birmingham City in the third round of the FA Cup next month.

The Magpies will head to St. Andrews on January 7/8 to face Steve Bruce's in-form Blues side, who are currently flying high at the top of the Championship. United met Birmingham twice last season, beating them at St. James' Park thanks to a goal from Emre before taking a point on the penultimate weekend of the campaign on the day that the Blues lost their battle for Premiership survival.

The draw means a return to the Midlands for midfielder Nicky Butt, who spent last season on loan at St. Andrews.

Newcastle United striker Michael Owen is determined to play again this season as he continues to battle back from his serious knee injury.

Owen damaged knee ligaments during England’s World Cup campaign in Germany and admits it has been a difficult time for him since. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid player, 26, is hoping to be given the go-ahead to step up his rehabilitation programme in the new year.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek programme, Owen said: “They have been difficult times in some respects. The one love and passion I’ve got outside my family has been taken away for the last few months. There is still a lot of work to be done until I am back out playing, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now and I am looking forward to the day I return. Plenty of people have tried to set targets for when I will start playing again, but it really is impossible to say. We have not done any serious work yet or tested the knee. The turn of the year will be the important time for me but I am confident I can play again this season. It would be great if I could. It would send me off for the summer knowing I’m fit and everything is fine with the knee and that I can comeback as strong as ever..."

Titus Bramble is set to miss Newcastle United's Premiership home game with Reading on Wednesday night because of a calf injury.

The former Ipswich centre-half picked up a knock during last Thursday's goalless UEFA Cup draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany. Manager Glenn Roeder told nufc.co.uk: "Titus took a kick on his calf out in Germany last week. We thought it would settle down but unfortunately it hasn't in time and he will be out for Wednesday."

Reading have adapted very well to life in the Premiership this term and Steve Coppell's team will head for St. James' Park full of confidence. United, however, will be looking to extend their recent unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches.

NewU 3 -2 Reading

Newcastle kept up their impressive run of form with a 3-2 win over Reading in a thriller at St. James' Park.

Antoine Sibierski nodded the Magpies in front on 23 minutes, but lapses at the back allowed James Harper to turn the game on its head to give the visitors a half time lead. Obafemi Martins scored from the spot to level matters just before the hour after being fouled in the box, and then Emre scored a screamer to give United the points...

...Glenn Roeder made two changes to the side that drew in Frankfurt last week for Wednesday's Premiership meeting with Reading. Titus Bramble was the latest player on the injury list, so Peter Ramage slotted across the back four into centre half with Celestine Babayaro returning from a groin injury at left back. The other change saw Albert Luque drop to the bench to allow Obafemi Martins to make a return to the starting line-up.

Newcastle United: Shay Given, Nobby Solano, Peter Ramage, Steven Taylor, Celestine Babayaro, James Milner, Emre, Nicky Butt, Charles N'Zogbia, Antoine Sibierski, Obafemi Martins (Giuseppe Rossi 88) Subs (not used): Albert Luque, Pavel Srnicek, Paul Huntington, Matty Pattison

Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder admits he is keeping his fingers crossed that his wafer-thin squad has come through the victorious clash with Reading without further casualties. Roeder said: "We are skating on unbelievably thin ice now. But hopefully all 11 will be in good enough shape to take the field against Blackburn on Saturday because there is no-one due to come back for the Blackburn game. Hopefully the 11 that started against Reading will all be fit tomorrow because we need them all fit."

Roeder was delighted with the character shown by his players in the 3-2 defeat of Reading and described the win as "absolutely massive". After United's seventh game without defeat, the United manager added: "The lads have worked so hard in the last few weeks and months. Reading came here as the form team, but we are in form as well. We have just put to bed 10 points in the UEFA Cup group stages. Now we can forget about that until February and get on with a fixture-packed December wit the little matter of a Carling Cup quarter-final against the champions just before Christmas."

Glenn Roeder was handed a double injury boost on Friday morning when Kieron Dyer and Damien Duff stepped back out onto the training field.

Roeder said last week that he was monitoring Dyer "day-by-day" after the midfielder suffered a badly gashed leg in the 1-0 home win over Portsmouth last month. And the England international made a welcome return to training on Friday as the squad finalised their preparations for Saturday's trip to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn Rovers. Duff, meanwhile, had to undergo knee surgery after picking up an injury in the 1-1 draw at Arsenal but was able to leave the gym this morning and start some light running work with the physios.

Celestine Babayaro plays for Newcastle United at Blackburn Rovers tomorrow knowing that his manager Glenn Roeder has full confidence in him.

The former Chelsea left-back suffered the ignominy of being booed by his fans for a short spell either side of the interval in Wednesday's victory over Reading at St James' Park. But Roeder told me today: "There is no question of Babayaro not playing against Blackburn tomorrow. It was his first game back since he hurt his groin at Watford in extra-time in our Carling Cup win, and at that time he was probably our most consistent player. In fact, I would say he was our best player when we were beaten by Sheffield United, and I will also say that it was unusual for him to make a mistake like he did against Reading on Wednesday night. Obviously he was very disappointed at the reaction from some of the supporters and, while he is not a player who has a lot to say, I know that he has been hurt by it all. But one thing have learned in my time with Newcastle as a player and manager is that our crowd our forgiving. Babayaro showed a lot of courage and bottle at the way he hung in there on Wednesday night, and I am sure everything will be OK."

If Roeder has no fears about Babayaro, he has complete confidence in leaving Nobby Solano on the other flank as it becomes a month tomorrow that Stephen Carr was injured at Manchester City. Added the United boss: "You keep expecting Nobby to get beaten, but he never does because he is a very shrewd footballer. I would say that Nobby is the ultimate professional and we are delighted he is with us."

BLACKBURN ROVERS 1 NEWCASTLE UNITED 3

Obafemi Martins netted twice and Steven Taylor struck his first Premiership goal as Newcastle United ran out 3-1 winners against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

The Nigerian hammered in an emphatic left-foot strike from 18 yards on the half-hour to break the deadlock before centre-back Taylor pounced from close range four minutes later to double the lead. Rovers had Stephane Henchoz sent off for a professional foul on Martins five minutes before the break, but rallied two minutes after the restart when Morten Gamst Pedersen rifled in a 25-yard screamer. A tense second-half saw both teams go close before Martins wrapped it up with a fine brekaway goal in the third minute of injury time to see Glenn Roeder's team stretch their unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions and record a third Premiership win in a row, leapfrogging their hosts in the process...

...Glenn Roeder named an unchanged Newcastle United line-up from the side that won 3-2 against Reading in midweek for this trip to Ewood Park to face Blackburn Rovers. Both the Magpies and Mark Hughes' men went into the game level on 19 points and looking for the victory that would pull them further clear of the sides below them at the bottom end of the Premiership table.

Newcastle United: Shay Given, Nolberto Solano (Giuseppe Rossi 67m), Celestine Babayaro, Nicky Butt, Peter Ramage, Steven Taylor, James Milner, Emre (Matty Pattison 54m), Obafemi Martins, Antoine Sibierski (Paul Huntington 86m), Charles N'Zogbia. Subs not used: Pavel Srnicek, Albert Luque.

Glenn Roeder faces an anxious wait to determine the full extent of his latest injury woes - but he expects to be without Emre and Nobby Solano for the trip to Chelsea after they both limped out of the 3-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers. Already hampered by a lengthy crocked list, the loss of the Turkish and Peruvian internationals, along with the late departure of Antoine Sibierski at Ewood Park, means the Magpies boss must wait and see just who he has fit for the midweek trip to Stamford Bridge to face the Premiership champions.

Emre suffered a nasty looking ankle injury after being fouled by Morten Gamst Pedersen fives minutes into the second-half and it led to the former Inter Milan star being stretchered off after receiving lengthy treatment. Solano, who has been a superb stand-in at right-back in the absence of the injured Stephen Carr, was the next casualty, having to be replaced in the 67th minute after going down with a groin problem. And with just four minutes remaining, Antoine Sibierski left the field in discomfort which meant rookie defender Paul Huntington was given his first taste of senior action for the club.

Gaffer Roeder said afterwards: "We were very concerned about Emre. We thought he might have broken his ankle at first. But our club doctor was quick to look at it in the dressing room. He's not broken it, but there's still some damage and until we've had it scanned we cannot say too much. Hopefully he won't be out too long because he's a very important player to us. It's the same with Nobby Solano. He felt a sharp pain in his right groin and that will take him out of this week's games. With Antoine Sibierksi, we're hoping that it was just cramp that he felt around his hamstring rather than any actual damage. When his body cools down over the weekend we'll have a better idea. Picking up three more injuries is a concern, having come into the game with probably a maximum of eleven or twelve fit senior outfield players. We're going into a very busy schedule. We're not making any excuses, we don't have to go on about it as the injury list is there for everyone to see."

Antoine Sibierski says he's determined to be fit for Wednesday's trip to Chelsea.

The Frenchman limped out of Saturday's 3-1 win at Blackburn Rovers in the dying stages at Ewood Park with a sore hamstring. But he's confident of being okay for the midweek clash with Jose Mourinho's reigning Premiership champions at Stamford Bridge.

The victory over Blackburn that extended United's unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions certainly came at a cost with Emre (ankle) and Nobby Solano (groin) adding to an already lengthy casualty list. Sibierksi, however, is hoping he won't be joining those already in the treatment room, saying after the Rovers win: "My hamstring stretched a little bit, and I didn't want to take any risks. We're playing every three or four days, and I have enough experience to know what I have to do. I had to come off, but I'll be alright for Chelsea..."

Glenn Roeder will hold a roll call to find out how many players he has to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night - but it won't take the Newcastle United manager long.

For by my reckoning Roeder will only have NINE of his regular first-team outfield players to choose from on a ground where they never do well and have not won for exactly 20 years. It could be 10 if Antoine Sibierski shakes off the hamstring injury he suffered in Saturday's excellent 3-1 win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. But while the admirable Frenchman was making optimistic noises about being at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, he has got to be doubtful. However, reports that Celestine Babayaro's booking at Ewood Park was his fifth of the season and left him facing a suspension are not correct and he will face his old club.

All Glenn Roeder would say on the injury front today was: "The three players who came off at Blackburn on Saturday - Emre, Nobby Solano and Antoine Sibierski - are all very doubtful for the Chelsea match. But the good news as far as Emre is concerned is that the scan has shown that his ankle is not broken as was feared on Saturday."

United will not know just how bad Solano's groin is until it settles down in the next couple of days. United could have skipper Scott Parker and Kieron Dyer back for the game with Watford at St James' Park on Saturday. And Damien Duff has returned to training after his cartilage operation and has rather optimistically targeted a return in the Carling Cup tie with his former club Chelsea at St James' Park a week on Wednesday.

But Chelsea at Stamford Bridge is Roeder's immediate concern - and what a concern it is. For the only senior regular outfield players definitely on their way to London are Steven Taylor, Peter Ramage, Nicky Butt, Charles N'Zogbia, James Milner, Oba Martins, Albert Luque and Seppe Rossi. Indeed, when I asked keeper Pavel Srnicek at Blackburn on Saturday if he could play right- back at Stamford Bridge he joked: "I'll play anywhere."

At Blackburn, United finished up playing with three teenagers and three 20-year-olds, and the experience will have done Matty Pattison and debutant Paul Huntington the world of good. Meanwhile, Sibierski is confident he will play at Stamford Bridge despite coming off four minutes from time at Blackburn with what everyone could see was hamstring trouble. He said today: " "My hamstring stretched a little bit, and I didn't want to take any risks. We're playing every three or four days, and I have enough experience to know what I have to do. I had to come off, but I'll be alright for Chelsea."

Glenn Roeder takes his injury-ravaged squad to Chelsea on Wednesday hoping fortunes will soon change on the fitness front.

Newcastle United head to Stamford Bridge eight games unbeaten in all competitions, but are again likely to be minus a host of senior players. The boss will hold a final roll call before travelling to the capital on exactly who is fit to play against the champions. However, he is confident that several of his big-name stars will be back in action for the weekend when Watford are the visitors to St. James' Park.

Giving an update at his Chelsea pre-match press conference, Glenn said: "Scott Parker and Kieron Dyer started training on Monday and I'm hoping that with a full week of training they will be fully fit for Saturday. We hope the injuries to Emre and Nobby [Solano] from the weekend are only short term. Emre has a very good chance of being fit for Saturday. When he first got injured we thought he might have broken his ankle but thankfully that's not the case. Hopefully he'll be fit for Watford, if not then the game with Chelsea in the Carling Cup. Again with Nobby we thought the groin injury at first might have been more severe than it turned out. Maybe Nobby will be back within a couple of weeks."

Solano had been filling in at right-back in recent weeks in the absence of Stephen Carr, and Roeder revealed the Irishman still needs more time to recover from a foot injury. He added: "Stephen's injury is proving a bit more troublesome with the pain in his foot not coming out as quickly as we'd hoped. He's running but striking the ball is difficult and I wouldn't like to say when he's going to be fit. It could be next week or the week after."

Glenn Roeder has spoken of just how serious Titus Bramble's calf injury proved to be after revealing the big defender has spent eight days in hospital.

The former Ipswich man took a kick during the UEFA Cup goalless draw in Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of November, but what at first was thought to be a minor knock proved far more worrying a couple of days later when he was taken to see medics after his calf had swollen in size.

The manager said: "Titus has spent eight days in hospital because we were very worried about the swelling in his calf, and when I say that you cannot probably imagine how large the swelling had become. The whole half of the bottom of his leg had doubled in size. Thankfully the doctors got to him in time and saw what the problem was. He's had the bruise seen to and now I think in the next two days he will be able to be released from hospital and then have a weeks' rest at home before starting to get fit again. That tells you he's probably three weeks away from being fit which could take out until the New Year. It's a real shame as he was having his best run when that happened."
