Re: Bournemouth General Chat & Starting XI Thread

This thread seems quite quiet, being a Cherries fan I may be able to help out.

GK: I suspect Boruc will remain first choice, he had good shot stopping last season but one always felt he could make a mistake. Off the field I understand I he hasn't fitted in so well with the squad so with a couple of errors it would not surprise me if Federicci got his chance. Great opening fixtures but I think there are better GK options.

Def: Last season AFCB played a back four with very attacking full backs. Simon Francis was the stand out player last season for AFCB, was up and down the pitch all game providing lots of overlapping runs and picked up plenty of assists. Combined amazingly with Ritchie. I doubt he will get as much of a chance to do this but attack is very much the EH philosophy. Mings is the club record signing so I think he will come into start, seems to fit the mould of marauding fullback but could well come into to play in central defence too. Elphick and Cook were very strong in central defence last season, I think they will start together with Distin as back-up, however although Elphick is captain I worry he won't have the pace to keep up in PL. Charlie Daniels was great too last season but I think Mings will come in for him. AFCB had a pretty decent clean sheet record last season but I suspect they may be quite exposed from pace at the back so will have to tighten up. Overall Mings and Francis are the stand out picks in defence.

Mid: AFCB typically played two holding midfields and then pretty attacking wingers last season - the wingers were mostly 'inside out' but occasionally would go onto their relevant flank, i.e. Ritchie left footed and primarily played AMR though would occasionally switch over to AML especially when chasing games at the end. Arter and Surnam played the holding roles, Surnam the deepest. Arter has really come on the last couple of seasons, has the potential to score especially from distance but is a yellow card magnet. Surnam is a bit under-rated but limited FPL potential. AFCBs real strengths last season were on the flanks. Pugh often looked a bit like he was playing in slow motion but he more often than not seemed to beat the man and got in really dangerous positions. I suspect along with Surman, Pugh's position is most under threat but he always has a habit of stepping up. Ritchie was fantastic last season, happy to take a shot and take on a man. Ritchie will score plenty this season and I'd say is Bournemouth's most dangerous player, scored 15 and had 17 assists last season! Of the new signings so far I suspect Atsu will come in on the left flank but I do think we will get another central midfielder too, plus possibly another winger. Atsu and King (See King in the attack section (may be an OOP)) are both pretty quick and combined with Ritchie/Wilson and . Ritchie is the obvious pick in midfield though Arter and Atsu could be options depending on the formation Eddie Howe decides to play, more should be obvious during pre-season.

Attack: Last seasons formation was a bit more complicated, either a front 2 of Pitman and Wilson or Wilson as lone striker with Kermorgant just behind. With Pitman leaving I suspect Bournemouth will buy more attacking coverage - though King may come off the bench. Kermorgant is a good all round striker and was on penalty duties for most of last season (I think... but he did miss at least one) but I don't think he will get as much game time this season. Wilson is a quality striker, lightning quick and great at finishing. I think he will fit in will the Premier League football and expect him to score, last season he also won a number of penalties which will give assist points. I think Wilson would be a solid pick for a third striker especially with Bournemouths opening fixtures.

I suspect Bournemouth will bring in some more players so I will give my thoughts on starting XI in a couple of weeks time but hopefully this gives something to mull over. I'm happy to answer any questions!

Top post! Probably, no definitely, the most useful I've read on Fiso during the current pre-season. Where's an applauding smiley in this forum when you need one?

Thanks for all the kind words. Nothing major to report from pre-season except it looks like Arter will miss the first few games as he hasn't actually started training yet following an injury at beginning of June. Still think we will sign one or two more players (most likely a striker and central mid).

Great post, however you haven't mentioned Stanislas at all, while he seems to be having quite fruitful preseason as far as goals are concerned.
What does his situation look like? Is he going to play or event break into starting XI?

I think he had quite a fruitful pre-season last year (either him or Gosling - can't remember) so I wouldn't read too much into it. I don't think he will start GW1 so therefore I feel is too big a risk, but if he continues to score/play well in the remaining fixtures maybe he will be given his chance especially as Arter is out. I think he is behind Yann, Ritchie, Atsu and even Pugh in the pecking order, I'll give my final thoughts a few days before the season starts.

Occasionally a posting lights up the Fiso sky like a flare at sea. Flare play to you an excellent, informative read which shapes Bournemouth's likely contributions through their FF potential. Wilson intrigues me as a possible third or supporting striker until the fixtures turn towards the winter.
I raised my children in the town and have fond memories of the candlelit gardens, the beach from Sandbanks to Hengisbury Head and the Chines where I spent most time swimming. If they can keep their heads above water till xmas, Howe may yet pull it off and keep them up.
Thanks again for the analysis; Richie could just be the cherry on this seasons fantasy cake! 8-)

BTW, there was something..Stanislas. Will he start and could he potentially take points from Wilson and Ritchie...perhaps even become a pick himself?

Pretty much the first team played in Germany yesterday and by all accounts deserved at least a draw. However, no sign of Francis at the back who played v Cardiff the day before. Backline of Smith Cook Elphick and Mings with Boruc between the stix.
Just to clarify...who will most likely be in goal? and will Francis, as best player last year, make the starting xi? Thanks

Can't see Stanislas starting, in fact I think with the recent (almost) confirmed signing of Max Gradels I could see Stanislas or Rantie not evening being in the named 25 squad - especially as looks like we may getting a couple more players (DM and heavily linked with Murray from Palace).

I'd suspect Max Gradel will come into the team down the left in place of Pugh.

I wouldn't read too much into the Cardiff/Hoffenheim match starting 11s (for instance Surnam is a certain starter but played in the Cardiff game). Eddie Howe always mixes things up in pre-season and more looks at how different individuals play together rather than the whole team. I'm pretty certain Francis will start ahead of Smith. My big question mark is still who will in CB out of Elphick, Cook and Distin, my gut feeling that with Villa's lack of pace up front he will stick with Elphick and Cook. I think Boruc will retain his place for the beginning of the season.

Other than that, Arter is pretty much definitely out so a bit of question mark who will partner Surnam - I think it may be O'Kane as he lined up alongside Surnam in the Cardiff match.

For now I'm sticking with Francis and Wilson as my AFCB coverage.

Find the purchase today of Lee Tomlin interesting and confuses the situation up front. Will Stanislas start? Not convinced. Wilson will. Mind you Tomlin is not the answer if you are wondering.

Tomlin will compete with Yann Kermo for the number 10 role. I don't understand the infatuation with Stanislas - I highly doubt he will play and definitely not regulary. New signings of Tomlin and Max Gradel will certainly up competition for some positions, still think we will sign a DM in the coming weeks too. Eddie Howe does tend to stick with what he knows and as AFCB have a very specific playing style it may take time for new signings to settle/adapt/get to the level of required fitness.

I meet up with a few AFCB friends last night and general consensus for XI vs Aston Villa was:

Boruc
Francis, Distin (but equally could be Cook), Elphick, Daniels (Mings has supposedly looked a little rusty)
Ritchie, Surnam, MacDonald or Gosling, Pugh (or maybe Atsu)
Wilson, Kermo or King

Obviously some debate but plenty of players we all agreed on. I'm off on holi-bobs now so won't be checking AFCB starting XI in detail... Good luck all that select Bournemouth players.

Thought I'd update this based on the seasons performance:

Boruc - will remain first choice until he mucks up, he's made a couple of mistakes but also some good saves
Francis - has looked good so far this season, I think he will pick up plenty more attacking points
Cook - has stepped up well
Elphick - currently injured which gives opportunity for;
Distin - now priced at 4.3, I think he'll start a few games and really cement his place in the team. He was great in clean sheet against Sunderland
Daniels - shame about the injury and with the Mings injury likely to be first choice for rest of season. Man of the match against Sunderland. Shame he didn't drop with the games he missed
Surnan - lock in for the season but won't get many points
O'Kane/Gosling - wouldn't bother as Arter is back training
Arter - When he returns will walk into the team
Pugh - played well when he's been on but rotation risk
Stanislas/King - both rubbish and down the pecking order
Ritchie - a real form player, his goal (and if you haven't seen it you should - contender for goal of the season) will give him confidence but he's still half the player without Arter alongside him
Murray/Kermo/Tomlin - all rotation risk, Murray and Tomlin has both looked good and could force there way in
Wilson - on fire, I think he could get quite a few more goals the next few weeks. His confidence is high.

I'm bias but apart from Man City I fancy our fixtures until December.
