Vertonghen just stretchered off in their friendly against Sunderland.
Fell awkwardly after jumping for a header, looks like he jarred his knee (at best), ligaments (at worst)

Thank god we finally have some depth back there at least. Problem is no other CB can make runs forward like him.
If he is injured Dawson could be quite the bargain.

Re: Tottenham Hotspur 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thr
I don't see any discussion on here, so i'll just give my opinion on how our formation will look and how rotation will effect it.
Lloris (brad will cover for unimportant cup games only)
Walker (nailed on)
Kaboul (possible rotation with Dawson, but likely to start most)
Vertonghen (first choice, but maybe injured)
BAE (while Rose is a better prospect today, I expect some rotation between the two with BAE starting most EPL matches)
Sandro (will feature over parker in vast majority of matches)
Paulinho
Dembele
Rotation Madness (Lennon/Dempsey/Sigs/Holtby/Chadli)
Bale
Ade (the second he misses form and Defoe scores, expect Defoe to take his spot and vice versa)
My Opinion as a Spurs fan and FPL player, not much value in spurs players. Our defence should be more sound this year than ever with Sandro back in the mix and a solid bench to cover injuries. Vertonghen could score 2 to 8 this year if healthy, but that already is in question. So at that price i'd avoid him. Kaboul and Dawson are great value if starting regularly, but that is not written in stone. I know Dawson is captain, but plenty of captains have sat the bench. I'd happily go with either that emerges as the regular starter even if they sit out the occasional match.
Bale is the obvious choice. But then way too much rotation risk for the other attacking midfield spot. I'm assuming Lennon will start most, but way too up in the air. And an unpredictable (uncaptainable) Ade as a striker leaves your money better spent elsewhere.

Benny travelled to HK, and didn't kick a ball
Definitely something happening there, especially when Rose played both games.
Let's hope Soldado is wrapped up by Monday.

Re: Tottenham Hotspur 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thr
It seems likely that Spurs will only add a single striker to the squad - unless they can offload Adebayor.
The midfield looks to be overloaded - so 2 from Parker, Huddlestone and Livermore are likely to depart.
I'm probably in the minority here, but if Real Madrid really are offering 80 large ones for Bale I think that Levy should take it, immediately. Who really wants to listen any more of this tedious on-going speculation about his future? The fact is that Bale is going to leave in 12 months anyway, or get injured - so why not cash in at peak time and take a ludicrous amount of cash from a club that isn't any sort of direct rival.
If he stays, I doubt if he'll match last season's amazing performances - partly because the new additions and returns from injury mean that the team will be better balanced and not reliant on Roy of the Rovers style individualism. Players such as Holtby and Sigurdsson might also benefit from playing in a system that's not focussed so much on a single player.
Now shoot me down...
Update...just seen The Guardian cite 86 million and repeat the tabloid reports about Bale packing a

A massive amount of money. As usual it really depends on the player. We've all seen the tabloid stories but thats not to say that they really represent the players wishes.
I guess we'll find out soon enough

Re: Tottenham Hotspur 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thr
I would guess it will be a fair few days because:
1, Levy will want to buy before selling clubs know Spurs have over £80m to spend, and they pay silly prices eg Higuain and Carroll for £35m
2, Bale puts in a written transfer request to save £10mish from Bale's cut for having been sold and "loyalty" payments.
Arguably the new player is a straight Bale replacement, so the cash can be used to strengthen other areas of the squad?

Paulinho is Bale's "replacement"
Bale has out grown Spurs and should move on - Spurs will get a shed load of dosh in return - with it they can buy what they need - a striker

Take this ludicrous offer; it's great deal for Spurs, Bales' agent and IMHO no one else.
If Spurs sign Soldado, to add to Paulinho and Chadli - plus the players returning from loan and long-term injury - they will be in pretty good shape even without Bale.

I didn't know Barnett was his manager - he has trashed Ipswich in the past, and I believe was banned from the training ground.
That aside: Spurs will be better without him, if they spend the cash wisely and before he signs for RM to keep the price down; and maybe a discount buy back clause when he flops?

He's showed over the last two years that he's one of the best footballers in the Premier League AND he's still improving.
Saying that, Spurs would be daft not to take £80M+

To me its in Bales best interest to stay for another season at Spurs, agree with your opening line, but again my view his status in world terms(ie sponsorship, commercial deals) is not same as his ability should have him.Tim Bisley wrote: He's showed over the last two years that he's one of the best footballers in the Premier League AND he's still improving.

Prem is seen all over, if his agent has his clients best interests at heart he would say to Spurs, he stays no problem this and goes next, using time to build up his clients name, if he goes this Real will have to put lot of cash into Spurs pocket and want to recover that via commercial deals using Bale, if he plays his cards right then he will be able to hold onto a lot of his own image rights (pretty sure thats Ronaldo's problem with Real)

AVB was giving Bale a roaming MF/FW position. AFAIK Paulinho is going to be in more of a holding role.Groomyd wrote:Attacking skillful midfielder

That's Sandro's role - I expect Paulinho to be more of a (dare I say) Lampard style box-to-box midfielder. If all works to plan, Sandro, Paulinho and Dembele could be a fantastic trio and there's plenty of decent cover in the likes of Holtby and Sigurdsson. It will be interesting to see who stays as cover for Sandro as he has yet to complete a full season and was sorely missed after his injury last time out.checkii wrote:AFAIK Paulinho is going to be in more of a holding role.

I have a lot of faith in the team we are putting together and think we will be plenty strong without Bale. I figured Paulinho would hold Sandro's spot till he is ready, just cant see Parker starting right now, but who knows, he is more suited to intercept passes and break up play.

I really hope Spurs can re-invest with some of the gargantuan funds they're about to get.
Bale really carried them last season. So many games at home where Spurs were toiling, struggling to create chances (they really, really haven't replaced Modric) and Bale would pop up with an absolute pearler from outside the box.
Looking forward to seeing Paulinho, hope he can settle quickly.

That would give more credence to the rumours about Vlad Chiriches, otherwise Spurs are going to start the season with only 2 fit centre backs and that assumes that Kaboul's recovery is complete.Ironfist wrote:Spurs sales process started...

All the same, IMHO, selling Caulker is a bad move. It's not as if Spurs need the money if Bale is going for a fortune.
