How come Man Utd have drawn MK Dons in the worthless cup? Always thought the big clubs joined the competition later.

We all had a good laugh when Leicester put five past you but since then you've only lost to Man City away. The laughing has curtailed.

Maybe one or two arrivals to come, but what's the feeling on Man Utd strongest XI and understudies for this season?

-----------------De Gea--------------
Darmian----Jones---Blind----Shaw
--Herrera--Schneiderlin--Schwein
---Mata------Rooney-----Depay----

Di Maria?
Carrick?
Smalling?
Rojo?
Fellaini?

Second position? Does he mean right back (often the number 2 shirt in the good old days)?? Valencia first choice still then??

Anyone care to take a guess at van Gaal's mystery striker?

The back 4 is the problem.
Smalling, Rojo and Valencia all likely come before the 4 named above plus a potential new centre back to arrive yet.

Very tough to predict at the moment and I foresee a lot of rotation during the season. Pre-season may give a better indication, but for now my thoughts:

Formation: I'd expect United to line up in 4-2-3-1 formation to start with this season, although this could change with the options and versatility of United's squad.

GK: Obviously De Gea - if he stays.

Right back: I'll be amazed if LFG has signed a proper right-back for 14m to play second fiddle to Valencia. I'm putting LVG's comments down to creating competition and pushing both players to fight for the position. Valencia is not a natural right back and United have been crying out for a proper right back for quite some time. There may be some rotation but Darmian should become the first choice assuming he takes to the Premier League. I'm expecting Rafael to be on his way out.

Left back: Shaw should start the season as first choice and if he stays fit and injury-free it could be a breakthrough season for him. But he'll face stiff competition from Rojo and expect rotation. Blind is also an option.

Central defenders: Tough to call at the minute with Jones, Smalling and Rojo the main choices. The word is that Evans will go if United can secure one of their targets. So I'd expect we'll have a better idea towards the end of pre-season or even after the Premier League kicks-off. IMO Smalling and Jones will probably start as the first choice pairing if they are fit and assuming no other signings. But Rojo may well force his way in as the form/injuries happen. It is probably a case of wait and see for now. Really think United have to make a big signing to strengthen this area.

Centre midfield: Lots of competition for places here with Scheiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Carrick, Blind, Fellaini all options. I expect Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger to develop into the first choice pairing. Schneiderlin being less likely to rotate than Schweinsteiger. Blind will probably get his fair share of appearances but as he is so versatile he could often be utilised as a left back, left midfield or even centre back dependent on the formation. Carrick is a quality back-up and may benefit from rotation. I fully expect Fellaini to be a fringe player this season and when utilised may be more further forward.

Midfield attacking options: Herrera, Mata, Di Maria, Januzaj, Young, Depay. Very tough to call at the moment such are the options. You could make an argument for any one of Mata, Depay or Rooney (should United sign a new striker) to play behind the lone striker. LVG's comments lead me to believe that either Mata or Depay will play in the number 10 role, with Depay getting first crack.

On the assumption that Di Maria is leaving, my gut feeling is there will be a lot of rotation with Herrera and Mata fighting for the right side of midfield, Young and Depay for the left side and Mata/Depay fighting for the number 10 role. Januzaj should get some more game time but will be back-up. The players are so versatile that LVG really has some great options. Rooney will come into the number 10 equation if United sign a new striker.

Striker: Rooney looks nailed on at the moment, but this could change if the rumours of a new signing are true. I doubt Wilson will get much game time. If he stays, Hernandez will be the back-up.

I think we just need to wait and see what pre-season brings.

My guess for the first match as it stands:

----------------------De Gea----------------------

Darmian------Jones-------Smalling-------Shaw

---------Scheiderlin----Schweinsteiger--------

Mata----------------------------------------Young
----------------------Depay-----------------------
----------------------Rooney---------------------

Although I wouldn't be surprised to see Herrera start on the right and maybe Depay to start the first match on the bench. Hopefully pre-season will give us a better idea.

Man Utd line-up

Post by SamD »

From The Guardian: Van Gaal stated the strongest XI he could select would contest the opening hour against Barçelona (yesterday) and PSG (on 29 July).

Starting formation in Saturday's 3-1 win over Barça in California:
  • De Gea
    Darmian, Jones, Blind, Shaw
    Schneiderlin, Carrick
    Mata, Depay, Young
    Rooney
If same side begins final US tour match on Wed, line-up for opening PL fixture against Spurs may be settled, bar injury.

Full report: http://www.theguardian.com/football/201 ... yne-rooney
Note: Di María was absent and Schweinsteiger had minor injury.

Baffling to me he'd play Depay centrally and Mata still wide. If he goes with that personnel seems to make sense to play Young and Depay wide and restore Mata to his favoured number 10.

Also I'd be surprised if Blind keeps Smalling out of the team despite yesterday's starting XI.

Regarding Blind, it seems that LVG is favouring a left footed player playing on the left side of central defence. As it stands it would appear that Blind will play against Spurs as the left sided central defender unless Rojo is match-fit - which appears unlikely given his late return after the Copa America. With this in mind it appears Smalling and Jones will be fighting for the same spot on the right side of defence. Evans is not even in the frame now. Of course if United manage to pull-off the Sergio Ramos signing we could be looking at a Ramos and Rojo first choice pairing.

Given Depay has started the last three friendlies in the number 10 role and is apparently performing well, it appears this is LVG's preferred option. I imagine LVG sees him as a more dynamic option. At the moment it seems that Young and Mata would fill the left side and right side roles, although if Pedro signs this will put both Mata and Young's game time at risk.

I'm a massive fan of Mata but although he appears to have 'won over' LVG as last season went on, I'm still not convinced LVG sees him as an integral part of the team. One to watch.

LVG says he has already decided 3 of his back four that will start the season.

" I think I shall play Shaw with Blind and Matteo Darmian and then the right central defenders position I have to consider"

Do I trust an article that thinks Ashley Young was first choice RB????

It was LVG's comments I thought were of interest, rather than the article itself.

Yep but tricky to know context from the article (first game? all season?) especially with them translating LVG's dodgy English.
