What do we know of Pellagrini? What formations and style of play does he prefer? Does he like a settled back line?

Judging by their last game in S.Africa he lacks flavour & colour, just like a bottle of mineral water.WilBert wrote:What do we know of Pellagrini? What formations and style of play does he prefer? Does he like a settled back line?

Seems to favour the 4-2-3-1
I'd say:
----------------Hart---------------
Zabaleta-Kompany-Nastasic-Clichy
-----Fernandinho---Rodwell-------
--------------Yaya-----------------
Navas------Aguero---------Silva---
- Likes a holding player, at Malaga - Toulalan
- Happy to use a big unit behind the main striker, Julio Baptista at Malaga
- Ok with a midget up top, used Saviola at Malaga
- Comfortable having playmaker type out wide, Isco on the left at times for Malaga
Subject to change of course, because at time Santa Cruz or Baptista was lone striker, with Isco in behind, but this is what I'd go for based on standard starting point.

Have you signed Jovetic and Negredo? I'd have thought he might pair Yaya and Fernandinho in front of the back four with Navas and Silva in front of them to give width. Then Aguero and either Negredo and Jovetic.
Just guessing and local knowledge trumps interested outsider.

Vid, one I think you are missing from the City team is Dedryk Boyata.
He's spent the last season or two out on loan but has been asked by Pelligrini to stay rather than move on. He played in the Audi Cup final against Bayern. With Nasty's injury (4-6 weeks), he might see an early first team game or two, and will at least be on the bench, I should think.
http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/ ... es-5672184" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You can remove Stefan Savic from the list. He left for Fiorentina yonks ago.
Two to keep an eye on who might get subs bench slots are Abzul Razak and John Guidetti. I think the latter is still working his way back from a long-term injury but should be fit soon after the start of the season.
Abdu Ibrahim is on a 6-month loan with Strømsgodset in Norway.

Snout question.
Who do you see as Citys front 6 for their opening game, and who do you see as Pellegrinis front 6 when all fit?

Bloody tough question.sleuth wrote:Snout question.

To me, Aguero is a world-class player who is the first name on the team-sheet when he's fit. That's when he's fit, which is not right now. He's unlikely to be ready for the season opener and even if he is, he's missed all of pre-season. It's a worrying scenario similar to last year where he flitted in and out of availability and thereby looked a shadow of his former self. I hope he's patched things up with his missus back home as, when they split up, that's when things went off the boil for him.
So, Pellegrini looks for a known quality upfront to start the season with and take the pressure off the others. Step up, Edin Dzeko. Most at the club felt he was harshly done by under Mancini, whose squeeze-it-tight tactics did not favour a 6ft+ lumberjack. Dzeko is best served by width and that is the one thing City lacked, deliberately so. Most teams cottoned onto this and played two narrow flat banks of four against us from the middle of the 2011-12 season onwards. We almost lost the league season-before-last because of it. Mancini's stubborness ensured we had no hope of a repeat last season.
Opposing teams said "You may come at us with your through-the-midfield-wizadry but, like Gandalf blocking the Balrog Demon, you shall not pass!" Arsenal have suffered such in many past seasons.
OK, we need width and pace to change things. Jesus Navas arrives for width. Alfredo Negredo arrives for pace (and strength in posession). Fernandinho arrives to be a Barry-with-pace. Jovetic arrives to... well, I'm not sure yet what.
Key to this, and who the team should be built around is David Silva. The one thing I have taken from pre-season is Silva's re-emergence as lock-picker extraordnaire, feeding Negredo and Dzeko in particular.
So, to answer your question:
Dzeko or Negredo as target man [Dzeko at start of season, Negredo maybe taking over; sometimes even both upfront together]. Aguero with a roving role in the three behind the front man. Silva sitting deep in front of and protected by Fernandinho and Yaya. Everything else is negotiable.
Barry/Milner/Nasri/Rodwell more likely to get starts in the smaller EPL games. Navas is the wildcard upsetting any predictions as we don't know what his temperament is yet; if we can get Jovetic to be his balance our left then great but that could take some time to happen. Garcia I have no faith in I'm sorry to say. Started poorly last season, progressed for a while but then slammed into reverse.

Re: Man City 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Great post, Snout!
My impression was that Silva didn't enjoy playing with Tevez and that he'll flourish again this season without that particular Argentinian around to cramp his style. Although Tevez is a brilliant, individual, player, he generally fails to fit into a team pattern - that's ok when a side completely revolves around him (e.g. his spell at West Ham), but doesn't work at clubs like City (or in his national side).

Thanks for informative reply, which pretty much cemented my thoughts as regards Dzeko, Silva & Aguero.
btw my other thoughts are Navas will be your Rosicky, as in footballing terms and certainly not as productive as Silva. I could be wrong but i wont be using Navas initially in my teams - BIG CARLOS for me.

Re: Man City 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Whatever you do, don't bring in Navas in the Sun. I may be (hopefully) talking bollocks here but he can't score for toffee. Might be worth a gamble in a game where assists count. I like what I've seen of him so far but he may take time to adjust to the PL.
Jovetic seems to be highly rated by many commentators but again may take time to adjust. Negredo and Fernandinho look more suited to be up and running quickly.
This - http://www.footballfancast.com/premiers ... rward-line" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - gives one view of how things we shape up. Seems to think Jovetic and Aguero could lead the line. I doubt that will be the case, certainly not first up.
The only thing guaranteed is rotation!

With question marks over fitness of Aguero I agree that Negredo could well start firing from the start and Fernandinho seems a better bet than Navas.
Presume Lescott will be first choice centreback in absence of Nastasic so may be value there.

Seems to be some discussion here as to who will start as striker, I'd assumed Negretto, but you in the know seem to contradict that.

Terrific player, think his best position is as a second striker, if City can get him and a main striker to click then they will do well.snout wrote:

Pos not a start pick but one to keep in mind to bring in, would see him and Dzeko being a good combination

Re: Man City 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
It's a toss-up between Milner and Navas IMO. Reckon Milner will get the nod for the first game with Navas coming on later on in the game. I expect Navas to establish himself as first choice later on in the season as he becomes accustomed to the PL but Pelligrini will still play horses for courses.
Good article yesterday morning in the MuEN - http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/ ... er-5712164" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Suggests a first game line-up (with reasons why) of:
Hart
PabZab Kompany Lescott Clichy
Milner Yaya Fernandinho Silva
Dzeko Negredo
playing as a 4-6-0/4-4-2. This is not the "best" XI but what you can reasonably expect against Newcastle. Looks right to me.

Aguero back in training so is Nastasic. Surprised no room for Navas in that lineup Snout (at the expense of Milner?)

Nastasic not being considered for Monday but Aguero is "in contention". Assuming he won't start but it's possible.
I reckon Milner will get the nod over Navas for this game. Could be wrong.

It was reported today that he'll be at least another month, ie he'll miss the derby...
Whether it will be Lescott or Nastasic remains to be seen, but my guess would be Lescott for the tougher games.
