Re: Everton 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
I'll try to summarise all the activity from the Summer's games including (some possible) ties with Spurs and Man City in their USA tour
First game of note: http://www.evertonfc.com/match/report/1 ... -v-everton" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Decent win. Not a big challenge - Robles getting 90 and Mirallas on set piece duty were interesting. But looks like rotational fitness was biggest factor here - nothing else of real note except perhaps 45 mins for Alcaraz and the omission of Kone (bench) - didn't get any time in a team fielding 19 players over the 90...

Also need to add a new striker above - we've signed a Barca forward on year-long loan: Gerard Deulofeu

Will Coleman be first choice under Martinez? If he adopts the 343 formation like he had at Wigan then he surely won't play as one of the three centre backs?

I don't see why he wouldn't be 1st choice. He'll be right-back or right wing-back. The 2 or 3 centre halves will come from a choice of Jagielka, Distin, Alcaraz, Heitinga & Duffy.pokergod wrote:Will Coleman be first choice under Martinez? We still don't know the systems Martinez will use at Everton, but given the season Coleman had last year, I'd expect him in the side.

Re: Everton 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
I cant see him changing the formation personally as it would stifle some of our attacking players (depending on who comes and goes obviously)
but Baines and coleman as wing backs would get in the way of mirallas, pienaar etc..

Well Pienaar could easily convert to a centre midfielder and Mirrallas to a forward.
Whether its wing backs or full backs - I can't see a formation where Coleman doesn't play. Unless Baines goes and RM opts for something a bit radical.
We've got some good pre season games to figure this out.

Does anyone think Joel Robles will start in goal for Everton, or is Howard likely to retain his place under Roberto Martinez?

So where is the Everton value then?
Considering Coleman/Jagielka maybe.

Robles has played the first two friendlies but Howard hasn't been available. I'd expect Howard to start the season.
Coleman and Mirrallas value for me. Possibly even Gibson as a cheap midfield enabler.

Will Barkley be breaking through this season? Some rate him highly .. reminds me of Rodwell in that respect.

Don't see Fellaini playing as far forward under RM. Mirrallas would be my choice by some margin.

Featured quite heavily in pre-season as an attacking mid. I reckon we'll see more of him but will still generally be a bench player.7lb claimer wrote:Will Barkley be breaking through this season? Some rate him highly .. reminds me of Rodwell in that respect.

Re: Everton 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Yeah I have a feeling that Fellaini won't be the main role player in the front like it was for most part of the previous season when he kinda played in similar role which Tim Cahill was in before. While Mirallas seems to have plenty of potential. I'm more concerned about Coleman getting enough game time, he looked really good last season and as they have him as a defender again(because, if my memory isn't wrong about FPL, he was put down as a midfielder last or last two seasons(while being a defender in FPL before those) - so for his price that instantly makes him a really good pick for fantasy football. Question is - will he get enough game time ?!checkii wrote:thanks, that was the feeling i was gettingtedbull wrote:Don't see Fellaini playing as far forward under RM. Beatn Juve on pens midweek, Mirallas again the scorer, he looks good value as a midfielder. About 9 of the 11 will pretty much pick themsleves, im just not sure on the attacking role

I just watched the match, Mirallas was indeed impressive.Tadpole wrote:Beatn Juve on pens midweek, Mirallas again the scorer, he looks good value as a midfielder. About 9 of the 11 will pretty much pick themsleves, im just not sure on the attacking role
I have to say though, his attacking threat doubled after Baines was subbed off. Everton play so much through the left with the Pienaar-Baines axis..I'm just concered from an FPL perspective that Mirallas may not get the involvement desired.
I also noticed he is a lethal weapon on the counter-attack, excellent dribbler at speed.. with finishing to match

Re: Everton 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Lost 2-1 to Real Madrid.
Some good play and some plain awful refereeing but I guess the result isn't that important.
We played well, Coleman and Mirrallas possibly the picks for us. Baines very off colour. Jelavic played second half and was livelier than Kone (an evening kick off in Ramadan wouldn't help him!) and got the goal.
On the great formation debate, it was more like a back 4 with Heitinga as a screen in midfield. Which is obviously shit no matter what stage of the season you're in. Unless it was meant to be a back 3 in which case it's just not an option with Johnny "runs like he's shit his pants" Heitinga constantly caught in midfield.
Distin, Howard, and Jags in no way comfortable with this style of play. A major concern. Maybe we will get a bit more pragmatic for the real stuff.
Got a look at Deulofeu - has some skill and some pace but not really on long enough to judge.
Osman's still shit. Actually he's getting worse as preseason goes on.

Any Everton fans wish to have look at the list in the first post please? Not included all youth/ reserve players but if any should be included please let me know. Possibly some debate as to whether 2 or 3 players are midfielders or forwards?

Re: Everton 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Might be worth adding John Stones and Luke Garbutt. Both full backs (debatable for Stones but that's where he's played most of his football I think).
Could make a case for some of the mids being forwards (and vice versa with Deulofeu) but its probably about right.

Do you put your opinion of Baines very off colour down to the supposed injury or wants to join Moyes?
also who do you see as Martinezs starting midfield<
Fellaini, Mirales, Gibson & Piennar? Or ?
