Great TV Series

Post by happyhoppy »

Finished Mr Robot tonight. Really fantastic last season and ending. Not something I thought I’d ever say after my struggles with earlier seasons. But seriously this season was spectacular. Can’t think of a season with such consistently high ratings.

Not a series but 'Elizabeth is missing' is a hard to watch tv film, surely the 83 year old star actress is nailed on to win the next top actress award for her performance.

Enjoyed it but you knew there was something nobody was saying to the camera (either that or their actions meant the script was dodgy) so when that 'twist' came it was no surprise.

Come back to acting and showed the younger ones how to do it. Think she should, instead, have come back and done the same thing to being a Labour MP.

She was a proper left winger, her and Corbyn backed Plaid in taking Blair on over the Iraq war.

They did though didn't they. It has got awful reviews - should have stayed as a stage musical not a film.

Can't believe I only just fond this thread thanks to latest newsletter PM'ed to me inbox.

Anyways if any of you are on Facebook I admin a Box Set and TV Series review group on there - when ever I finish a series or show I give it a rating (between 1-10) and write a little review.

Being a TV addict I have 50+ shows on rotation right now so it takes me ages to finish one but my groups been going several years so plenty older ones on there.

Any genuine peeps welcome to join - its on private to keep spammers out. Just request to join and say FISO or answer the question it gives and I'll accept you.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1752780988380325/

Maybe I should think about posting all the shows I'm currently working my way through (so not reviewed yet) as some are real good.

I also don't mind foreign shows at all as long as they have English Subtitles so love 4OD's Walter Presents section of best shows from around the globe.

Not sure if you can view anonymously or not - try link?

I also mark all my films seen on IMDB but that would just be a list of all films I've seen though you can I think get it to display in rating order:

You - good premise, annoying actors. I’ve stalled at 3 episodes

Messiah - got to three episodes and sticking with it without being blown away (once you get past the initial Homeland feel).

happyhoppy wrote: 12 Dec 2019, 11:39 I can’t believe you’ve not seen the original war of the worlds. ImageImageImageIf you had you’d have given that new version 0/10. The original is excellent.
Not the english one (seen on iPlayer) but I watched series 1 of the US/French one (cross collab by Fox/Canal) set between England and France (and yes the French based part is all in French). I hate the cliff hanger it ends on as nothing is tied up so a complete waste of time if they don't renew for a second season. But otherwise worth watching - I loved how it started.

As you've not got FB here's my review for it (cut and pasted from my FB group):

WAR OF THE WORLDS (2019) - 4/10 (If You Have Nothing Better To Do)

Parts equally in English and French. (so subtitles needed if you can't understand both languages)

Season 1 Episodes 8

Plot: Set in England and contemporary France, this Anglo-French reimagining of H. G. Wells' classic in the style of Walking Dead follows pockets of survivors forced to team up after an apocalyptic extra-terrestrial strike.

This series starts off really well and I really liked the idea. I like how it blends 2 countries dealing with the same catastrophe. The story is interesting and includes a British and French cast, which is new to me. We find the progression of 3 groups of people in this post-apocalyptic world between the Alps and London who are trying to find meaning in what happened to humanity after the surprise attack of the 1st episode. The motivations of the main characters are divided between pure survival, the search for relatives and the search for reasons and justifications for the attack rather than eradicating the invader.

Concerning the scenario, it was chosen to unfold the story in a rather intimate way by focusing only on the 3 groups as well as to develop some personal aspects, sometimes too much. I would perhaps have preferred to see more references to human nature (selfishness, individualism...) of which there are a few but not many. On the other hand, I have noted some inconsistencies concerning travels, sometimes too fast.

For the realization, we will also note the profusion of plans with the dead people on the ground which reinforces this feeling of "alone in the world " The dominant colour in the different shots remains grey which is common in Canal+ series.

The soundtrack is minimalist and unpretentious and it should be remembered that it is not a blockbuster, that it is useless to put epic music on a series that wants to be cold and dark. Not everyone will like it, but it was enough for me.

As for the last scene, although it is surprising, I was expecting it with the rare clues crumbled in during these 8 episodes. For me unfortunately the series trod water after the first 2 episodes and nothing is tied up - its like only half a series and so if there's not a series 2 then it will feel like a giant waste of my time so far to just end as it does.

In the Cut has a French Producer and is really if only due to sitting there watching and continually mumbling "it's Meg Ryan"... 😂
