If German films are the order of the day, look no further
Art Vandelay wrote:

A lot of the dialog is in English so not a massive amount of subtitles needed, but they help none the less.

The first half is a bit slow, but probably adds to the overall experience. By the end it's as tense an experience as you'll ever have (watching a film).

I loved it 8/10
I came on here just to recommend this. It was great Image

On the imdb thing, if something's less than four it's safe to assume it's not much good and if it's over 8.5 it's not going to be terrible but other than that I wouldn't take much notice. I find the ratings of everything in the 5-8 range is pretty much unrelated to how I would rate them (there are plenty of truly awful films scoring around 7 :?) I'd recommend Rotten Tomatoes critics ratings if you're looking for some sort of quality guide.

The Experiment is on my to watch list: I've seen the US version of the true story, which is a bit bland...

Other good German films (I was quite shocked by the comments about there being none) include:
The Lives of Others
Four Minutes
Atomised
If not us, who? (which is about the formation of)
The Baader Meinhof Complex (so make a good Double Bill)
Was that the Stamford Project or something else?
If the former, I quite enjoyed it.

Probably: but I was tainted by knowing about the real thing so I was expecting more, which I would expect the Germans to nail

Back off holiday... so a rare chance to rattle off a few films on the flights;

Snowden it was ok. I believe Citizen Four is the definitive film (documentary) to watch on him/this. But this was an easy watch and gave me some background in to who he/it was. As with all things Hollywood, not sure how much has been beefed up; is/was he as patriotic and well intentioned as the film makes out. Not sure i'll ever know. 7/10

The Accountant Part Bourne, part Rainman. Again, another easy-non-too-taxing affair. Decent paced action film (if you suspend thinking too much about the plausibility of the plot). Worth a watch 7/10

Edge of Seventeen not sure if i would be their target audience (nearly 42 year old male, watching a film about a 17yo girl). Thought it was ok though. Mildly amusing tale of a 17 year old girl grappling with life's issues at that age. 7/10

The Salesman an Iranian film about a couple coming to terms with the aftermath of his wife being attacked in their apartment. Pretty good watch 8/10

Lion A brilliant film based on a very emotive true story. The first half is a bleak reflection on India we are mostly ignorant to (abject poverty and dark perils that exist (not exclusive to India of course)) - Its not all UK call centres, IT services and space programmes we might more inclined to think about India in modern times. A really good film though 9.5

Thought it was ok, but only a 7/10 for me.
Decent enough and good humour in parts but just lacked 'something' (not sure what).

Still Alice a very realistic portrayal of a woman being struck down by early onset dementia. Very well done, but definitely not one that Murf will need to watch 7.5/10

Looks fun hoppy - I'm guessing cannibals. The IMDB blurb makes it sound like Society

Impressed with 'the girl with all the gifts' 8/10

Plus there wasn't an M&M advert on the DVD which makes it a 9

Just watched Split; quite dark but really enjoyed the psychological aspect (a little bit Silence of the Lambs about it). I think 8/10 is about right.

Get Out was totally effed up but gripping stuff 9/10.

Watched Alien Covenant earlier today and for my money it wasn't really any better or worse than Prometheus (7/10).

It had a decent number of enjoyable scenes/sequences (unfortunately there's some forgettable ones as well) and yet again featured supposedly intelligent individuals making some really dodgy decisions.

The proper origin of the alien is finally revealed and I must admit it wasn't what I was expecting (in a good way) and that in turn led to a pretty good, albeit incredibly obvious, twist at the end.

Overall if you keep your expectations relatively low I think this film represents a relatively positive viewing experience but please be aware that it never gets close in terms of quality to the first two entries in this franchise.

La La Land (10/10)
The Handmaiden (9/10)
Logan (9/10)
Manchester By The Sea (9/10)
Miss Sloane (9/10)
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 (8/10)
Get Out (8/10)
John Wick: Chapter 2 (8/10)
Patriots Day (8/10)
King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword (8/10)

Split (8/10)
Kong: Skull Island (8/10)
Wonder Woman (8/10)
Free Fire (8/10)
Shimmer Lake (8/10)
Gold (8/10)
The Salesman (8/10)
Colossal (8/10)
Wilson (8/10)
My Cousin Rachel (8/10)
Hacksaw Ridge (8/10)
Denial (8/10)
A Cure For Wellness (8/10)
Ghost In The Shell (8/10)
Small Crimes (8/10)
War Machine (8/10)
Moonlight (8/10)
Alien Covenant (7/10)
The Belko Experiment (7/10)
The Great Wall (7/10)
The Lego Batman Movie (7/10)
The Founder (7/10)
Live By Night (7/10)
Assassin's Creed (7/10)
xXx 3: The Return Of Xander Cage (7/10)
Life (7/10)
T2 Trainspotting (7/10)
Silence (7/10)
The Love Witch (7/10)
Sleepless (6/10)
Rings (6/10)
The Mummy (5/10)

Struggled to connect with this for the first forty or so minutes but after that I was hooked and it turned into a fascinating & quite scary biographical drama (8/10).

Thought this was a well above average entry in the genre and I really liked both the cast & their characters (8/10).

Sideways is a good film, need to watch that again.

Passengers 7/10
Had low expectations, but quite liked this, although it did end a bit abruptly.

Minions 4/10 - disappointingly unfunny

One of my fav films of recent years. I gave it a 10. Thought provoking and quite funny at times. The pay review cracked me up. Love Jake G.

Takes an awfully long time to get going, offers up only a couple of excellent sequences (WW's attack on Germans occupying a village and a short, brutal fight with a German villain) and then descends in to tedious CGI overkill. Gal Gadot is quite good in the lead role, offering an appealing element to an often silly character, but the film feels schizophrenic in trying to tell two tales (war/spy thriller, WW origin story) and fails at both.

Hoping to see it later in the week so should be able to give a second opinion on this film shortly.

Should anyone be considering going to see 'The Mummy' please be aware that it is pretty much as bad as the reviews are making it out to be and it's currently the worst film I've seen this year  ...

La La Land - 7/10

Massively overhyped, but a pleasant couple of hours with some decent music

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - 8/10

Great fun, lots of laughs
