Biopics

Post by bluenosey »

The Bohemian Rhapsody film has put Freddie back in the limelight, some mixed reviews from certain critics, but people seem to like it. This follows on the back of "First Man" which doesn't seem to have gone down as well.

Always a steady flow of biopics. I really liked The Imitation Game and A Beautiful Mind but there are so many. You can even go back to Citizen Kane, still lauded by the critics and based on media magnate William Randolph Hearst, albeit somewhat loosely.

"Unbroken" and "The Wolf of Wall Street" introduced me to people I knew nothing about and led to further intrigue/reading.

So what's the best one, or you're favourite ?

Wolf of Wall Street was an amazing film
Donnie Brasco
Schindlers List
Goodfellas
Into the Wild
Beautiful Mind
Catch me if you can (although the film wasn't very good compared to the book or the real story)

Usually not as keen on ones of people I know or remember too well. Had no interest in, for example, biopics of Thatcher or The Queen or Queen. Approached the one of Hunt/Lauda with trepidation but quite enjoyed it.

Prefer to dicover stories/people I don't know like Man On The Moon (a true biopic of a famous-ish name) or Into The Wild (not really a biopic, just a story based on one part of a person's life).

Beaten to Man on the Moon, which I think is the only real Biopic that I have. Most are banal and hideously biased\whitewashed showing nothing new or of interest. But then they aren't my "go to2 films - assuming we mean a pretty much whole of life film.

If you’ve not already seen it, I highly recommend ‘Control’.

Brilliant.

Recommend Control too. Peter Hook biography (book) of that period gives another good view on that story from a different angle.

Aren't all Cooghan films essentially him being him though? He is Alan Partridge, Redmond...

Linking from Man on the Moon through Ms Love (that really was an incredulous story), and soft porn: she was in a good one with Woody Harrelson about a Yank one - the Hustler bod?

That was good too, but I also can't remember the name!

In a similar vein is a British one about Paul Raymond (but it does help that I am a big Anna Friel fan. Gorgeous in it).

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117318/ far too many words for me to remember

The British one was with Cooghan, yes Friel, but no Courtney? Where did her career go wrong? Well apart from the drugs, botox and bizarre taste in men post Cobain.....

Does Cool Running(s) count?

I'm sure there is an Eddie the Eagle one, which was quite good.

Not sure if it was a film, but there was a BBC thing on the Stoke supporter turned proper mascot\cheerleader ie in the Dressing room, which was brilliant.

Goodfellas and The Theory of Everything spring to mind, but one of my favourites is the Madness early years movie 'Take it or Leave it', which I think was written by themselves i.e auto-biographical, but may be wrong.

Certainly, the film starred the band members and I love it because it shows the band when they were still in the early stages of their career. For me, it's a go-to music DVD that I've watched many times.

Quite unique that a band should make a movie about themselves so early in their careers.

The 2 Julian Cope Autobiog's are quite brilliant, and have often pondered what a film or 3 of them would be like  :? 8-)
