International break film and telly extravaganza!

Post by Spinynorman »

Roll up, roll up. It's the (not so) great FISO telly and film extravaganza because there is no fantasy football happening type thread! :D

We've been there and done it all before but not for a while and never this badly.

It is yet another international break after all.

So then what are your following?

Top 5 favourite films: (not comedies just serious stuff, anything light hearted is banned as well. Musicals could go in here if they are sort of serious. Movies are also okay.)

Top 5 favourite comedy films: (not to include films that aren't comedies as you have just done them, light hearted stuff could go here.)

Top 5 Telly Programmes: (Space age weird cosmic transmission stuff as provided by Netflicks, Amazon Prime and Sky Atlantic also allowed. )

Top 5 Telly comedies: (Only if they make you laugh, it has to be more that sniggering and tittering. Quiz panel type things will have to wait for another day.)

Top 5 Telly kids programmes: (Star Trek , Dr Who and others that (possibly) cross over can be placed in more than one list)

Top 5 Favourite Telly actors: (Can include Men, Women or Skippy)

Top 5 Favourite Film actors: (Can include Men, Women or Lassie and may include movies)

Impossible to narrow down of course and your choices may be different the day after you make them as you may have forgotten a fave but it's surely easier to do than navigating that awkward flange, deciding on when to wild card, working out how SDT transfers and price rises work or trying to add something new to the FISO - Have your say thread.

If you just want to list them then that's fine but keeping them in the above order would be good. Do one section at a time if you want, I probably will if only to give the thread an occasional "bump". Pontificate, justify and wax lyrically if you wish as we no doubt would all like to read about your thoughts and feelings on all things tellyrific and film wise. :P

So dust off those old videos, get out there on Youtube, read an old copy of Radio Times and hearken back to the days of Barry Norman, Bernard Braden, Peter Glaze and Mr Pastry.

When I mention to folks these days that I saw some great films at the pictures when I was a nipper they seem rather bemused and thing I went to art gallery's a lot. :?

Incidentally anybody using The AA Route Finder to compile their list will awarded a BAFTA.

Have limited to films id watch over and over again. So Shawshank and Usual Suspects are right up there for being amazingly good films but they are one time watches for me.

Top five TV programmes

The X Files
Game of Thrones
The West Wing
Breaking Bad
Stranger Things

Stranger Things was best thing I watched on tv last year and as the trailer for the second season is fantastic and it’s fresh in the memory it just nudges The Walking Dead out of the top five.

So difficult to get just 5 of each so I'm taking the approach of my top 5s based on "if I could only watch 5 ever again" then, in no particular order, I go...

Top 5 favourite films - serious:

Dr Zhivago (1965) - Just stunning ... and Julie Christie :)
Zulu (1964) - The story, the soundtrack, introducing Michael Caine - again stunning
Apocalyse Now (1979) - One of those films where the story behind the making adds to the finished article
Excalibur (1981) - I love this movie so much - Nicol Williamson as Merlin is just fantastic
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) - out in the same year as Star Wars this one, @11yrs old, spoke to me more (whatever that means)

Top 5 favourite comedy films - lighthearted:

Arthur (1981) - Perfectly funny
Life of Brian (1979) - just because...
My Cousin Vinny (1992) - Joe Pesci is so good in this
Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) - it's just a jump to the left ...
Tin Men (1987) - such a great film - so underrated

... and many more ...

Annie Hall is the one and only film I've ever seen at the pictures twice in one day. Mrs Spiny (not really Mrs Spiny back then) was working a split shift at the eye hospital in Brum and when she went back to work at about 4:00pm I went to see Annie Hall at The Odeon. When she finished at 8:30 I took her to see it. Very happy days indeed. :)
