Well I didn't think we would ever see that again. That's one more bit of history to add to Federer's case as greatest ever... four and a half years after his last Grand Slam title, overcoming his greatest rival in another epic to return to the top.

So much more explosive than a Murray-Djokovic match which, to be honest, can be hard work to watch at times. Would be great to have a whole year of the four of them going at it quite evenly matched with one or two younger men pushing them as well.

Couldn't argue with Federer if he just walked away after this though, would be some way to sign off... don't think that's his way though, he will want at least one more crack at an eighth Wimbledon.

So, a brave effort from Murray after a poor run of form this year, but just ran out of steam against Wawrinka in a great match. Saves us all a few hours of watching his futile efforts to stop a revitalised Nadal claiming "La Decima" I guess (Stan does have half a chance though, his very best form probably beats anyone else's...)

Nadal's rout of Thiem shows how far away the next generation still are, and it may well be the one after that which eventually unseats the big five, as we now have to refer to them, despite the fact they're all over 30 now. Any of the five could end this year as number one.

What a sorry state the women's game is in though... the supposed next cab off the rank as world number 1 can't close out a final against an unseeded unknown. Nobody has any sort of consistency or star quality, Serena could probably win Wimbledon 6 months pregnant if she tried to!

So if Federer wins Stuttgart then Halle then Wimbledon in next month (2750 points)

And Nadal goes fishing for a month

Nadal will still lead the 2017 Points race

Is Nadal playing Queens (or one of the alternatives?) Obviously Murray's won it several times and is presumably defending the title again this year.

Federer usually plays the Swiss one that happens at the same time, and Djokovic I think tends to take a break before Wimbledon.

I think I'm right in saying that Nadal has pretty much no points to defend for the next 3-4 months whereas Murray won almost everything this time last year so can only go backwards until the US Open?

Yeah, Murray has 3,100 to defend before the US Open (2000 from Wimbledon). Nadal as you say has the square root of sod all... not that much from the others in the top five either (1000 or so at most).

Murray can gain points at the US Open but he then has loads to drop in October/November when he was playing (and winning) every tournament open to him as he saw a chance to snatch the top ranking. So barring another run of form like that it's going to go sooner or later, he just needs to guard against dropping out of the top four.

Nadal has (7285 minus 6915) points to defend before Xmas

Before long the big four will agree between them to only play one Slam each per year, as they get older and more fragile but still better than anyone else

I don't suppose Federer and Nadal are that bothered about world number 1 now, they probably have the view that if it happens then great, but they'd rather add to their tally of major titles, and that means targeting their efforts at the ones they have most chance of winning. Nadal's barely had any sort of run at Wimbledon for a number of years, not sure if he really believes he can win it or make an impact again. Not playing a grass tournament before it seems questionable preparation anyway...

Not any more...

Crap last four now, Fed will walk it if he stays upright. Starting to wonder how many of the big four we will see at the O2 this year though. Their workload and long term dominance of the top end of the rankings is starting to catch up with them all.

Federer had to work hard to get past Berdych and Cillic will not be easy. he has had match point against federer at Wimbledon before and he blew him away in the US Open last year.

Really looking forward to the final today!

Murray now ranked number 23... in Britain!

Djokovic's showing will offer him hope of returning to the top table though, different injury I know but still a long time out, and the game hasn't really moved on in their absence.

So, it’s all over, just about. Hoping for a Wimbledon farewell but the upcoming Aussie Open could well be his last appearance. An unfortunate way for it to end for him, but one of Britain’s truly great sportsmen. For a long time I thought that Grand Slam title would remain elusive, but he ended up with three of them in an incredibly tough era, perhaps up against the three greatest players of all time. Plus double Olympic gold and a Davis Cup.

We’ll get behind Kyle Edmund, Cameron Norrie and the next generation, but we may not see his like in terms of global standing for a British player for decades. Thanks for the memories, Andy...

As for tennis in a wider sense, Federer is 37, Nadal is increasingly fragile. Djokovic might sweep the board this year, even if he’s not as infallible as a few years ago. Or maybe it will be the long awaited year where the likes of Zverev step up in the longer format?

Or maybe not...

Roger Federer is nearly thirty-eight years old. By all reasonable logic, if he’s playing on Centre Court on the final weekend, it should be in the invitational doubles playing trick shots from the umpire’s chair. And yet he can still produce this, on the biggest stage. Nadal and Djokovic may be a few years younger but even they are at an age where many of the greats had long since retired. Is there any doubt now that they are the three greatest male tennis players of all time? Would Sampras just look like a rich man’s John Isner in today’s game? Murray himself probably deserves a place in the all-time top ten for his efforts in competing with them over so many years. In other eras he’d have won eight or ten Slams.

Was that really four years ago he “retired”? This might be his Wimbledon farewell, ten years to the day since he first won it. But he matched the number 5 seed all the way, pretty impressive with a metal hip.

And Federer’s gone, Nadal’s almost gone, but still the next generation haven’t really stepped up. Djokovic looks like he will walk it again. As for the Brits, journeyman Broady put in a brave showing, Norrie was shocked by Chris Eubanks (a bit harsh if he had to play both father and son at the same time, even if boxing’s their strongest suit…) What became of Edmund? Injuries I think. On the whole, no British man making it to the first weekend is an abysmal showing.

Normal service has been resumed?

It's more posh/elitist than cricket, so why should we have any expectations of success?

Because we throw 100 times as much money at at as the countries we lose to in the Davis Cup?

Even Jeremy Bates used to make week 2 on occasions, in the pre-Henman dark days…

And the money goes to making the elite/posh clubs even nicer?

I'm sure there's a token few grand tossed into inner cities etc, but where does the vast majority of it go?

According to the rankings, Norrie and Evans let us down but nobody else. Norrie only should be in Round 4 (week 2)

13. Norrie Cameron Great Britain 2610 (should make last 16, Rd 4)
30. Evans Daniel Great Britain 1321 (Rd 3)
40. Murray Andy Great Britain 1030 (Rd 2 - correct!)
78. Draper Jack Great Britain 741 (rd 1)
142. Broady Liam Great Britain 422 (not top 128 - shouldn't even be there)
164. Choinski Jan Great Britain 348
268. Peniston Ryan Great Britain 207
348. Harris Billy Great Britain 145
371. Loffhagen George Great Britain 130

As for the women, none are in the top 64 so shouldn't even make round 2.
