Re: The Ashes
Couldn't last and we've had a wobble with Lyth getting too cocky on a career best 16 and ct behind and Bell returning to pre-Edgbaston form lbw for just a single, but 49-2 trailing by just 11.
If we can get up to 121 we shouldn't need to bat again.

Might be going well atm but we can't be too complacent, Australia are quite capable of notching up a football score in their second knock.

I wouldn't mind a football score it would be a cricket score that would concern me.liquidfootball2 wrote:Might be going well atm but we can't be too complacent, Australia are quite capable of notching up a football score in their second knock.

Re: The Ashes
How the Aussie press (well actually just the Brisbane Courier) reported it
From the Brisbane courier
BEFORE lunch, Australia had already been Broadsided.
By stumps their Ashes campaign was all but Rooted.
Australian cricket has spiralled into crisis after arguably the darkest day in Ashes history, as England took an extraordinary 214-run lead heading into day two — the third biggest advantage ever taken on the opening day of a Test.
Michael Clarke’s imploding side were bowled out in less than one session for 60 in 18.3 overs, in what was the shortest first innings by balls bowled ever recorded in Test matches.
Stuart Broad tore the heart out of Australia with figures of 8-15 that included the equal fastest five-wicket haul of all time.
Following the same number of overs in their reply, England had already taken a first innings lead.
By the end of the day they had more than quadrupled Australia’s total to be 4-274, with superstar batsman Joe Root celebrating an unbeaten and spectacular 124 which in itself lapped the entire offering of his opponents.
To put the humiliation in perspective, Root’s ton was the first time in Ashes history a second innings batsman has posted three figures on day one.
Clarke blamed himself for the last Test at Edgbaston, conceding Australia were playing with just 10 men as a result of his poor form.
But yesterday Australia fielded a team only on paper and they might as well fly home now because the Ashes is as good as over.
The mental disintegration of the Australian batsmen was almost hard to believe as they lost two wickets inside the first over and 7-33 inside 10.
It was the only time in Ashes history that extras (with 14) top scored.
Next best was a bowler, Mitchell Johnson (13) and as far as the top order was concerned, both Australian openers made ducks for the first time since 1950.
Selection gamble Shaun Marsh also failed to deliver with a nought of his own.
The decision to sub him in at the expense of brother Mitchell was an unmitigated disaster — as Australia’s bowlers were then forced into the field without the support of an all-rounder to assist them.
Captain Clarke would have hoped never to again be part of a disaster like the 47 all out at Cape Town in 2011.
When Australia slipped to 9-47, there was every chance lightning was going to strike twice on that infamous number.
But in many ways, this performance was even worse.
Not since Australia stuttered to 58 in 1936 have they suffered a worse Ashes collapse.
Already 2-1 down in the series, it’s only a matter of time until Australia surrenders the urn back into England’s possession.
Mitchell Starc was the best of Australia’s bowlers with 3-73 but there was nothing worth savouring.
England captain Alastair Cook made 43 and Jonny Bairstow 74 to rub salt into Australian wounds.

Re: The Ashes
Jos Buttler's dreadful form seems to have gone under the radar.
Not one score all series and would think Bairstow must be pushing him for the keepers role in Test Matches.

Clarke was their best hope.
Still can't see it ending tonight unless Australia want to leave the country early.

Even if it ends tonight I'm pretty sure they're obliged to turn up for the 5th Test.

Totally forgot about that dead rubber!
We'll let them win that one and let them touch the Cup before wrenching it away

Re: The Ashes
For a few of the Aussies I think the problems go a bit deeper than technique and form.
There were rumblings that the team were unhappy that the all rounder was dropped, depriving them of a 4th seamer, and its clear tonight what a difference it can make.
Broad was out on his feet, Finn was not putting the ball in the right area, but up steps Stokes and takes 5 wickets.
The vice Captain Smith's dismissal was the most baffling, 3 quick wickets had fallen, and just 3 deliveries before tea and he has a wild flash at a wide ball.
Before that, after building a steady foundation Warner then takes numerous risks before he finally found the way to get out.
As if they were saying we can get our heads down, if we really want to.
Just get the impression there is some friction between the senior players and the Aussie cricket bigwigs.
I wonder if Clarke had got wind of some news that if he lost the urn he is out of the reckoning, maybe even for the 5th test.
He looks a beaten man, he has since the toss yesterday.
Its not dissimilar from the way the last Ashes series down under fell apart once it got to 3-0.

Re: The Ashes
Steve Smith is a better player, more intelligent player than to play that daft shot just 3 balls before an interval.Maldini wrote:We're just playing the conditions a lot better than they are. Nothing more, nothing less.
Lords was a belting wicket and they hammered us. Three green seaming wickets and they're clueless.
This was supposed to be the no.1 batsman in the world, and he cant play straight? or stop himself hitting across the line when the ball is moving off the pitch?
Or even have the discipline to leave a ball alone thats 2 yards wide of off stump?
Im not buying this conditions excuse on its own.

Re: The Ashes
I think Smith is the best batsman on flat wickets, his technique isn't good enough for the moving ball. He'll do well in Australia, South Africa, the West Indies and the sub continent but less well here or in New Zealand.
