Darren Clarke Ryder Cup captain

Good choice or not?

Personally, I don't like him. He seems to hide behind the cheeky chappy scallywag persona but really seems like am arse to me.

Solid choice, I like him. Always better to stick with the popular obvious choice than try and do something leftfield. Think he will do well with all the media stuff as well, was so nauseous listening to McGinley by the end of the last Ryder Cup and all this "no stone left unturned" nonsense.

Good choice

We got the players, we got team spirit. He just needs to keep them happy.

This is looking an intriguing side for Europe as things stand, with 5 rookies  Not many points left to play for, but a chance Westwood and/or Kaymer could play their way into an automatic qualifying spot.

Who else is there, who Clarke might make a captain's pick :?:

Looking at potential pairings, always key:

Stenson / Rose - nailed on number one European gun pair 8-) Could play 3/4 together
McIlroy / Garcia - been done before, looks exciting :)
Garcia / Cabrera Bello - always like an all Spanish pairing :P could be a useful 4 ball
Westwood / Kaymer - solid

Then a load of English rookies and 1 extra captain pick to grab other pairings from. Westwood usually a decent shout to pair with a Willett or Wood type.

European Ryder Cup Team....as things stand:

Rory McIlroy
Henrik Stenson
Segio Garcia
Chris Wood
Danny Willett
Rafa Cabrera Bello
Justin Rose
Andy Sullivan
Matthew Fitzpatrick

--------------------------
Lee Westwood?
Martin Kaymer?
??????????

Fitzpatrick is making a decent fist of matchplay at the moment in Scotland as well which should bolster his chances.

Kaymer should play his way in as his form is excellent at the moment. Westwood is a certainty as a pick at least too. I'd like to see the third pick being someone in form in the US tour seeing as it's a US course but with so many rookies I think he'd go for experience over someone like Knox or Lowry.

Agree.

Shame Casey is unavailable, I guess he would go McDowell for experience.

So, Pieters is in.

Leaves us with:

Rose / Stenson
Mcilroy / Fitzpatrick maybe?
Garcia / Bello
Kaymer / Pieters
Westwood / Willet

Sullivan & Wood twiddling their thumbs for most of the opening 2 days

with this thread I can see who are some of theFISO RYDER CUP followers and hope they will be joining my prize comp for the big event. The USA line-up is not known yet but a leading part of the comp is to forecast the exact score with halves always involved. The thread was launched 5th August titled RYDER CUP 2016. Hazeltine. Keep watching.

Battling back to 5-3 at close of Day 1.

Some big issues as Westwood, Kaymer, Willett look unpickable for Saturday :?

Would like to see these 3 winning pairs kept together, so leaves Fitzpatrick and Wood to be sent out together :| Better to just let them give it a go than send them out with the experienced Westwood hitting it all over the shop and missing absolute sitters on the green.

Sergio and Rafa looking like a modern day Seve and Ollie in that one... Rory just needs to hold his nerve on the last few holes and it's game on. Pairings for round 3 will be interesting.

I didnt think Willet played too badly yesterday - just run into a very hot pair and had little support from Kaymer.
I would imagine he will play again in the fourballs - just hope we dont see Kaymer and Westwood again until the singles.

Stenson and Rose split up to partner the as yet unused rookies in foursomes, with McIlroy/Pieters and the Spanish pair retained.

I suspect we'll see one or two of the struggling players again this evening, to try and play them into some form, as otherwise Clarke is basically writing off a couple of singles games by not using them again before.

What a comeback from Garcia and RCB... certainly takes the momentum going into the fourballs. Not sure about some of the pairings here, but a couple of struggling players being given a chance to find something before the singles.

Yep very impressive, and maybe pivotal?

Not sure how Pieters can put up with Wowy, he seems easily loathable - I don't usually stream golf, but freaking hell what a £$€!!!

I love his passion. He's playing against a very partisan crowd so if he's pumped up all the better.

Great stuff from McIlroy and Pieters, dormie 4 against Dustin and Koepke... still work to do from the others to make this an even session though. What tactics will we see from the captains in terms of the singles batting order? That could be decisive.

Question: Are the American golfing crowd disrespectful, just excitable or simply entertaining? I've never been able to decide.

I can't watch this year

Americans are awful in this - I know a couple and can't say I'm too impessed - loud and ignorant (maybe I've been unlucky) - but when they get all jingo its too much

Darren Clarke Ryder Cup captain

Post by Maldini »

I never watch it when it's held in the States.

In Europe it's one percent of the crowd who are morons. In the States, it's twenty percent.

For Europe to win this week, the big guns of McIlroy, Rose, Stenson & Garcia all had to fire.
Unfortunately, they haven't.

The big players have generally performed reasonably well, it didn't happen for Rose with the putter but otherwise the big names secured most of the points except when they ran into inspired opponents like Patrick Reed.

With so many rookies though it's a bit of a lottery, you don't know which ones are going to step up. Pieters was superb, Cabrera Bello impressive as well, but there have been too many passengers elsewhere, including a couple of the stalwarts who relied on captain's picks. The balance of the team wasn't quite right, the Americans look like pretty much sweeping the bottom half of the board, as a captain you can't have 5 or 6 players you want to hide when it comes down to the singles.

They did pretty well to stay in it though, given the meltdown of the first session. I really couldn't see Europe getting to double figures after that.

With the singles Clarke shouldn't have front-loaded. He should have thrown a sacrificial lamb or two in and if they had got anything it would have boosted those lower down......

Fitzpatrick going out last is\was an admisssion of defeat, imho.

10 birdies for Phil but still only a half! What a match that was.

Really want to see Sergio win a major one day, a great competitor, still a few years for him I guess but like Monty, Poulter and Westwood it seems he's destined to have his legacy mostly in the team event.
