He says he thought it was an intruder and shot her. Odd thing is that if he thought there was a an intruder wouldn't he check next to him in the bed to ensure his girlfriend was safe?

She was paying a surprise visit it said, so assume she wasn't meant to be laying next to him in the bed

Ok. He had said before that he sleeps with a handgun and a machine gun in his bedroom. A real tragedy for all concerned.

I have to agree. You never do a surprise visit on someone at 4am in Johannesburg!

Reading further from this it seems it is not as straight forward as that. He had a party and a woman was drunk and hurling abuse. He asked her to leave, which she did, but returned and was kicking and banging on the door. He opened the door and told her to leave but she tried to get in a a block of wood that was used to secure the door fell on her leg. He was released with charge.

Exactly. In many houses you can't move outside your bedroom during the night without setting off alarms and the arrival of security goons if you don't deactivate the alarm within seconds. The last time we were in Jo'burg I was happy to enjoy the luxury, but Mrs Striker didn't as she felt like a prisoner.

Either the reported facts are wrong, or his girlfriend was an idiot, or there is something more to the story.

I lived in Johannesburg in 2009/10 for about 13 months. It was great to live in a nice house with an outdoor pool but hard to cope with 10 foot high walls, barbed wire, electric fences, indoor and outdoor alarm, motion sensors and armed response units. The alarms would go off at 3am or some ungodly hour and I'd get up, have a look around the inside and wait for the armed response unit. They would turn up with AK47s, MP5s and shotguns and ask for the code words. If they get the right codes they go away. If given a wrong code they walk away but return later with more armed guards and a shoot out follows. Never happened to me but it did to my neighbour. I'm sure his girlfriend had the codes and such to deactivate the alarms but was South African and would know never to turn up unannounced at this time in the morning.

South African prosecutors have refused OScar Petorious bail as they fear he's going to do a runner.

They also say he hasn't got a leg to stand on.

If not before, there is certainly now a big chance of his life story being made into a movie. "Blade Gunner".

Aparently neighbours heard shouting building up to the gun fight, and there has been previous domestic problems at the residence. I hope it's not deliberate.

Harsh Gaz IMO. OK, he didn't cover himself in glory when he had a bit of a whinge about the Brazlian runner's prosthetic leg after being beaten in London but aside from that, he's done so much to put the Paralympics on the map. Perhaps more than any other paralympian. Even competing against able bodied athletes.

It's so sad to hear this news :( . Sounds like there could be a story behind the story. Several domestics. Also goes to show that guns being freely available is not a great idea....

Insane news. Seems to me that it must have been on purpose. But it seems crazy why he would do it on purpuse, whatever the reason as to why he shot her. He is a millionaire, is loved my his nation, and had a stunning girlfriend......why throw that away........he's screwed now.......will be living in a cell surrounded by barbed wire and armed security........oh wait, that's how he lives anyway.

Repeat domestic offender, charged with murder, but its ok because he's put Paralympics on the map. You're right Ian, he's a real gent

I may have got this wrong, or possibly South Africa have an unusual way of dealing with serious crime, but does he not have to face a fair trial in a court of law before he is condemned and sentenced?
Or is it now the medias task to do it?

Haven't the media just reported he's been charged with murder? Can't see anywhere where they've not just told the (apparent) facts.

Only in the title of this thread (if we count as the media).

We have numerous accounts through friends of his personal relationship with the victim, rows etc.
Statements from neighbours, claims of noisy altacations, even a reminder of the case where charges of assault were dropped.
A few even mentioned how his character was suspect after appealing against his defeat about the length of his rivals blades.
The chances of him having a fair trial are probably diminished.

On the other sides of the scales is the fact that he's an icon to many in SA. Do they have trial by jury in SA - lots of places don't?

You'd imagine that the position of the body and the ballistics would give some pretty solid clues as to whether this was a mistaken intruder identity or a crime passionnel

No trial by jury in South Africa. I think it's a panel of judges decide.
