Crystal Palace - Expected Line-Ups 13 August 2016

Post by FootballWriter1 »

2015/2016 SEASON REVIEW

Last season was very solid for Crystal Palace as they managed to stay in the Premier League and to play the final of the FA Cup. They finished the Premier League season in 15th spot, tied with Bournemouth but with better goal difference. They were just 5 points from the relegation zone, but the season was successful because of the FA Cup final. Palace had a great chance of winning the Cup, but lost to United in the final 1-2 after extra time. In the run to the finals, they have beaten some quality teams like Southampton, Tottenham and Stoke City but fell short in the final game. The League Cup was not that successful as they lost in the fourth round to City 5-1. They were very lucky to stay in the league for next season, because in one moment they had 14 straight matches without a win, from late December to April, when they finally got a win over Norwich 1-0. Palace did have some quality matches and wins over Liverpool, Chelsea, Southampton and Stoke twice.

PRESEASON 2016/2017

This preseason was very good for the club as they signed some quality players and well-known names. Steve Mandanda, one of the best goalkeepers from Ligue 1, came from Marseille and signed a three year contract. They signed two very proven players with lot of Premier League experience, defender James Tomkins for 10 million pounds from West Ham and attacking midfielder Andros Townsend from Newcastle for 13 million pounds. Crystal Palace also made bids for Benteke from Liverpool and Berahino from West Brom. Many players were sold or released. Palace sold Dwight Gayle to Newcastle, Alex McCarthy to Southampton, Jerome Williams to Peterborough United and Jake Gray to Luton Town. Some of the players were released were Adebayor, Chamakh and Mariappa. Brede Hangeland retired from professional football, after spending two years in the club, this 35 year old defender made the decision that it is over for him. Palace did a great job in preseason with signings and if they sign another quality striker, they can make another similar or even better season than last one.

GOALKEEPERS

Crystal Palace have three very experienced players at goalkeeping position, Wayne Hennessey, Julian Speroni and the newcomer Steve Mandanda. Wayne Hennesey, 27 years old goalkeeper who was their main man at that position last season, will fight Steve Mandanda for the no.1 spot. Hennesey played in 29 League matches for the club last season, having 8 clean sheets and making 79 saves. Mandanda is very proven goalkeeper and Marseille legend, where he had over 300 appearances. We will see how a change in environment effects him and will he be able to prove himself to Alan Pardew. Speroni is a goalkeeper who is at the end of his career. With 37 years on his shoulders he will wait for his opportunity to play in some matches.

DEFENDERS

Crystal Palace had a solid defence last season, conceding 51 goals in 38 matches and being in top 10 best defences in the league. With their new, maybe the biggest signing, James Tomkins who played at centre back position at West Ham in 25 games last season, their defence will improve from last season. The best player in Palace’s centre back position and also the captain of the team is Scott Dann. This 29 years old Englishman had a great season with the club, missing only 2 games in the Premier League. He was a true mentor and leader on the pitch. Even though he plays at centre back position, Dann scored 5 goals in the season and was one of the Palace players with the most goals last season and is a popular pick with Fantasy Football managers. His partner at centre back position was Damien Delaney, another long term Crystal player, who has 4 years at the club. Delaney played in 32 league matches last season and he also just like Dann, had a great season with 2 goals and even 3 assists. At the right back position, Pardew played Joel Ward. Ward is a great player and very versatile, who can play several positions on the pitch as right back, centre back, defensive midfielder and even right winger. He played in 30 matches the previous season and had 2 goals with 1 assists. On the other side, there is Senegalese player Pape Souare, who showed that he is a great footballer and finally earned his position in starting lineup. Substitutes from last season were Hangeland who retired, Mariappa who was released and Martin Kelly who played in 13 matches in the last season. Zeki Fryers spent last season on loan but came back to the club. Crystal Palace have only 7 defenders at the moment and they will need to sign few more role players in case of injuries. If they stay healthy, their defence now improved with Tomkins will be better in the upcoming season.

MIDFIELDERS

Crystal Palace have great midfield players and 12 players that play in different midfield positions in the squad. Their new addition, Andros Townsend, will even more improve their midfield base and get strikers more involved. Yohan Cabaye is one of them. A great player, with great vision and also very safe option for penalties. He is a very experienced player who played in 33 League games for the club last season and scored 5 goals. He is one of the best players in the squad and has great mentoring role on the pitch. His partner in a little more defensive role at midfield was Mile Jedinak for most of the season. Jedinak is already 5 seasons in the club and made over 150 caps for the team. Jedinak had a great season with the team, showing great leadership when needed the most. He started in 16 games and came off the bench in 11 more. Their substitutes were Joe Ledley and Jordon Mutch. Ledley is a former Cardiff and Celtic player and plays for the club for two years now. He played in 19 matches for the club, starting in 11 of them. He also played in all games for Wales at Euros 2016. Mutch in much younger than Ledley, with just 24 years on his back he still has time to show his full potential and talent. He was a bench player last season, playing in 20 matches but starting only 7. Little more offensive midfielders are Zaha, McArthur, Bolasie, Chung-Yong, Sako and Puncheon. Wilfried Zaha, a former Manchester United player, played the most games for the club last season. Amazing talent and player but failed to show his full potential, but is still just 23 years old and I’m expecting great things from him next season. This right winger played in 34 league matches for Crystal Palace but didn’t have a much of a season, scoring only 2 goals and assisting 1. His substitute was another player who was once considered an amazing talent, Lee Chung-Yong. South Korean player made only 13 appearances in Premier league, but in 9 of them came off the bench. He did score his first goal in a Crystal Palace shirt. Jason Puncheon played for 31 games in the club and scored 2 goals with 3 assists. He was much better in 2014/2015 season when he scored 6 and assisted 7 goals in the Premier League. This 30 year old player is looking to get into that form for the upcoming season. Another great winger is Yannick Bolasie who has amazing dribbling skills. He is a long time Crystal Palace player, who made 132 appearances in 4 season scoring 12 goals. He had very solid season with 5 goals and 3 assists in only 26 League games. Just like Puncheon, 2014/2015 season was better for him, when he scored 4 and assisted 6 goals. James McArthur and Bakary Sako play in attacking midfield position. McArthur made 28 appearances last season, scoring and assisting 2 goals. His substitute was Sako who started only 11 games for the team, scoring 2 and assisting 1 goal. Midfielders haven't produce enough end result and that was the main problem for Palace last season. With the arrival of Townsend and now that other players have settled, they are looking for a better season.

STRIKERS

Palace have only one available striker for the first game of the season and that is Connor Wickham. They only got two strikers on the squad (Appiah is to be sold or loaned), but Frazier Campbell is injured for 2 more weeks. Connor Wickham arrived at the club last season and in 21 games scored 5 and assisted 3 goals. It was very solid first season in a Crystal Palace kit, but he will need to improve a lot this season if they want to get good results. Campbell is well known for being quick and talented and starting his career in Manchester United but injuries kept him off the pitch last season as he only played 11 games. As I said Palace have made bids on Benteke and Beranhino and it will be crucial for them to bring in a new and proven striker to their squad. No other player scored more than 5 goals last season for Palace in the league and that was their biggest problem. With new, proven and experienced striker and with midfield like this, they could be a very good team for upcoming season.

2016/2017 PREDICTED LINEUP

Pardew played with 4-2-3-1 lineup last season and that lineup got him to FA Cup final. With the arrival of Tomkins and Townsend and possible another player, this tactic could reward him.

Hennessey/Mandanda
Ward Dann Tomkins Souare
Cabaye Jedinak
Bolasie/Zaha Puncheon/McArthur Townsend
Wickham

SUMMARY

Crystal Palace made some very good signings and had a great preseason, but it’s crucial for them to sign some proven and experienced striker who can score 10+ per season. This was their biggest problem last season and with Townsend in the squad they now have much more offensive tools to operate with. Defence will be even better with signing of Tomkins and also they have two very good goalkeepers who will be fighting for that number 1 spot. My prediction for The Eagles for next season is around 11th place and a good run in League Cup but if they sign a good striker. If they don’t sign any other player and stay with this roster, I would say they will finish around 14th place.

Tomkins is out and McArthur a doubt (Souare a lesser doubt) so likely starters are:

Hennessey (Mandanda - not fully fit yet?)
Ward, Dann, Delaney, Souare
CM: Cabaye(match fit?) or Puncheon, Jedinak
Wingers: Zaha, Townsend
Free attacking role: Bolasie (in squad despite agreed fee with Everton)
Striker: Wickham

Townsend potentially the best pick and along with Zaha and Bolasie they are 3 exciting players so Pardew should try and play all 3 when at home which means maybe a support striker role for Bolasie if he is staying despite a fee being agreed with Everton. Means a lot of defensive work/cover for the 2 CMs and the FBs. If Wickham doesn't knock some goals in then seems likely that Bolasie will go so they can buy a striker.
