Burnley - Expected Line-Ups 13 August 2016

Post by FootballWriter2 »

Report written 4 August and to be updated before opening match at home to Swansea on Saturday 13 August at 3pm

Last Season Stats

The newly promoted club were Champions last season, scoring 72 goals and conceding 35. Alongside Brighton and Brentford they were the top scorers in the division whilst having the best goal difference in the division. Usually the mantra for promoted teams is that the first season in the Premier League is all about survival. But that was proved incorrect last season where Leicester City swept all before them to claim the Premier League title. Can they repeat the success shown by last seasons promoted clubs? Time shall tell.

Manager

Sean Dyche has been here before with Burnley in the 2014/15 season and will be doing his hardest to stay to ensure as a minimum survival in the premier league is achieved. Last time out it was really Burnley’s away form that let them down. Sean Dyche will stick to his beliefs and uses a very traditional 4-4-2 system, he’s very much a man manager and motivator. He likes his teams to work hard for each other in a tight knit unit.

Defence

Firstly, the goal keepers.

Tom Heaton – The club Captain barring injury should be a shoe-in as the first choice number one for the new season.

Paul Robinson – The veteran ex England international will be looking to provide cover for Tom Heaton

Nick Pope – The experienced goal keeper will be looking to provide some competition with Paul Robinson and Tom Heaton for the 1st team.

The Defenders include.

Matthew Lowton – The full back will look to continue his good form from last season after an injury at the beginning of the season. He made 27 appearances scoring 1 goal.

Ben Mee – The versatile defender and last season’s players' player of the year will be looking forward to have another go at the Premier League. Comfortable at either fullback or centre back. Last season in the championship he was ever present and should be again. He completed 49 games and scored 2 goals.

Stephen Ward – Has a hamstring injury and not sure if will be available in time for the start of the season.

Michael Keane – Another virtual ever present in last season’s promotion push for Burnley. The ex-Manchester united player was involved in 46 games last season scoring 5 goals from centre back.

James Tarkowski – The young centre back will be looking to add some further playing time onto his career.

Tendayi Darikwa – Another promising fullback. Usually vies with Matthew Lowton for a starting berth but due to the injury to Stephen Ward should get his chance to impress. Last season made 24 appearances scoring 1 goal.

Midfielders

David Jones – One of the main stays of the midfield last season David Jones will be another of the players looking to make his mark in the premier league again. Made 43 appearances last season scoring 1 goal.

George Boyd –The Scottish international winger will be looking to make an impression on the premier league again as well. Last season he played 47 games scoring 5 goals.

Scott Arfield – An integral part of the team the midfielder will be the driving force for them again this season. Last season he made 49 appearances scoring 8 goals.

Dean Marney – The experienced central midfielder will be looking to get some more game time in the heart of the Burnley midfield. Had a knee injury in February 2015 which ruled him out for most of 2015. Last season made he made 12 appearances.

Fredrik Ulvestad – The Norwegian midfielder will be looking to get more appearances this season. Last season made 7 appearances.

Michael Kightly – The experienced winger will be looking to increase his game time this season. Last season he made 21 appearances.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson – The new signing from Charlton Athletic is an Icelandic international midfielder. The winger will look to add further competition down the flanks for the team. Last season with Charlton Athletic he played in 42 games scoring 6 goals.

Forwards

Andre Gray – Club record signing and Top scorer in the championship last season with 25 goals in 41 appearances. He will be looking to test himself against the Premier League best defences this year.

Sam Vokes – The big Welsh International striker will be looking to continue a fruitful partnership upfront with Andre Gray. Last season he made 46 appearances scoring 16 goals.

Lukas Jutkiewicz – Looks like the big English striker will be playing back up to Andre Gray and Sam Vokes again this coming season. After having come back from injury recently he’ll be looking to get fit for the new season. Last season made 6 appearances.

Ashley Barnes – Has a hamstring injury and not sure if will be available in time for the start of the season.

Rouwen Hennings – The German forward again will be looking to break up the established front two of Andre Gray and Sam Vokes. Due to the injury to Lukas Jutkiewicz did manage to make a substantial contribution last season making 28 appearances scoring 2 goals.

Chris Long – The young striker will be looking for more first team opportunities this season but will find competition fierce. Last season made 11 appearances.

Expected Line-ups

Ben Mee could shift from central defence to left back to cover the injury to Stephen Ward. Or either Tendayi Darikwa or Matthew Lowton could be drafted into the left back position. I would expect a team similar to the below to start the season (Possible alternative player marked in brackets):

4-4-2 formation:

Goal Keeper: Tom Heaton

Defence: Ben Mee, Michael Keane, Tendayi Darikwa, Matthew Lowton

Midfielder: Scott Arfield, Dean Marney, David Jones, George Boyd (Johann Berg Gudmundsson)

Forward: Andre Gray, Sam Vokes (Lukas Jutkiewicz, Rouwen Hennings)

The team really picks itself. I don’t see any deviation away from 4-4-2 this season. New signing Johann Berg Gudmundsson will be looking to add competition in midfield but I think Sean Dyche will go for tried and tested players to begin the season.

Summary

The main pick for fantasy managers must be Andre Gray who has been on-fire in pre-season (8 goals in 5 matches). The top scorer in the Championship last term and so far, scoring lots of goals in preseason too. If he can convert that to goals in the Premier League we could have another Jamie Vardy on our hands. There is also Scott Arfield who is the tried and tested option in midfield and the main creator for the team. Johann Berg Gudmundsson is a bit of unknown quantity but after his performances at the European Championships he will be looking to break into the midfield and make his mark at some point. In defence, the goal keeper Tom Heaton is a solid bet as captain to have a strong season. Time will tell if the defence is good enough at this level again this season.

If Darikwa starts at centre back, I'll plait piss.

If Ward doesn't make it, Danny Lafferty will start at left back, or Jon Flanagan if his loan from Liverpool ever goes through.

I don't think it was intended to show Darikwa in the centre, just four defenders being listed not in order, but I agree your suggestion is the more likely

However is it not possible that Mee will cover Ward and Tarkowski come into the centre?

I think you will find Leicester didn't win in their first season!

Jon Flanagan has joined Burnley on loan for the season. The full back could be the answer to the who will play left back question.

Has played LB at Liverpool but is really a RB (Clyne even switched to LB so Flanagan could be RB).

I think Gray have good chance to score in gw1. Planning an early wildcard makes him a good value selection.

Flanagan is not expected to start on Saturday, but Ward is likely to be fit.

Sean Dyche says he has a high expectation that Stephen Ward will be fit for Saturday’s Premier League opener against Swansea City.

Andre Gray is the main player considered by fantasy football managers.

P.S. Burnley in process of buying Belgium midfielder Defour.

Line-up was:

T Heaton, B Mee, S Ward yellow card, M Keane, M Lowton yellow card, D Jones yellow card (L Jutkiewicz, 87), G Boyd, D Marney, S Arfield (J Gudmundsson, 75), S Vokes, A Gray

Subs not used: P Robinson, F Ulvestad, M Kightly, T Darikwa, J Tarkowski

David Jones sold and Defour purchased so likely to be a straight swap in. Gudmundsson could be in line for a start after his Euro 16 exertions for Iceland. So a couple of changes to the middle of the 442 formation likely.
