Everton - Expected Line-Ups 13 August 2016

Post by FootballWriter1 »

Report written 3 August and will be updated in the run up to Everton's opening match at home to Tottenham on Saturday 13 August at 3pm.

LAST SEASON REVIEW :

Season 2015/2016 was very turbulent for Everton. Roberto Martinez did a great job in his first season as a manager of Everton, finishing 5th with the club with a new club record 72 points. Expectations for the last season were high and everyone at the club wanted the same or even better results, but things didn’t go well as in the previous season. Everton finished 2015/2016 season at the 11th spot, sharing the spot with Swansea with the same number of points but with better goal difference. Everton have been a constant threat for European competitions over the years and the result of 11th place was unbearable for the club, therefore Martinez was sacked. The team was very close to winning a trophy last season and saving the season, but they lost in the semifinals of both cups, FA and League Cup from clubs from Manchester (In FA 1-2 against United and in League Cup 3-4 against City). The fact that shows just how miserable a season that was for Everton is that their biggest win streak in Premier league was just 2 wins and they did it only once in 38 games. They did have some great games like wins over Chelsea 3-1, Southampton 3-0, Sunderland 6-2, but the moment when everyone and I think even Roberto Martinez knew that he would be sacked was a harsh 4-0 defeat to their biggest rival Liverpool. After that they also had some pretty rough defeats, against Leicester 3-1 and against Sunderland 3-0 and that pretty much sums up their horrible season.

PRESEASON 2016/2017

Everton made a great go of preseason and have some very big and significant signings that will definitely improve a lot of things and make this season much more successful than the previous one. The best move that they made was signing a new, proven and with Premier League experience, manager Ronald Koeman. Koeman had a magnificent season with Southampton setting a new club record with most points won and was just 3 points behind the Champions League qualification. After team legend Tim Howard finally moved out and went back to the States, Everton signed a great goalkeeper for the next season. Marteen Stekelenburg, the former Ajax, Roma, Monaco, Fulham and Southampton player signed a 3 years contract with the club, coming from Fulham but spent the last season under Koeman with Southampton on loan. They also signed Chris Renshaw from Oldham Athletic as a backup goalkeeper. Their biggest signing, apart from Stekelenburg is Idrissa Gueye. This 26 year old player came from Aston Villa for approximately 7 million pounds. He plays in defensive midfielder position and Koeman said they need his quality in the team. They also released long term players Osman and Pienaar.

GOALKEEPERS

This position was reserved for Tim Howard for over a decade, but this club legend moved back to the US, after being the part of Everton squad for 10 seasons. Howard, 37 years old played in 329 games for Everton and even managed to score one goal for the team. It will be very strange for Everton fans next year when they see another goalkeeper in “his” position. As I said, it looks like a Dutch player, Maarten Stekelenburg is their new main goalkeeper. In the last season, he played in 17 Premier League matches and managed to secure the net clean for 6 of them and also had 29 saves in that period. He played for some big clubs in his career (incl Ajax), has a lot of experience and is proven to be a great goalkeeper. This was their best signing and they secured themselves very well on that position. Joel Robles is Stekelenburg's main competition and he has been allocated the No. 1 shirt by the club (Stekelenburg the No. 22) and was in goal in place of Howard for Everton for part of last season but, based on pre-season matches and the links with the new manager, I expect Stekelenburg to be the main goalkeeper.

DEFENDERS

Defence was a big disappointment for Everton in the last season. In 38 games played in the League they have conceded 55 goals which is top 5 most. Their best defender is John Stones, 22 years old Englishman who is on his way out of Everton. He is just days away from signing to Manchester City for 50 million pounds and Guardiola confirmed the interest. The guy who played in 33 games last season and was a part of a defence who conceded 55 goals in 38 games, that price looks ridiculous. He didn’t show anything spectacular last season and also that form continued at the Euros with the England National team. In my opinion City are making another huge mistake, paying this absurd price for Stones, but Everton can surely use this money to find a couple of very solid defenders. They showed a lot of interest in Swansea’s captain Ashley Williams but their 10 million pounds offer was rejected. Phil Jagielka had a lot of problems with injuries the past season and that caused him to play in only 21 league matches. Maybe this was the problem for their defence, a constant changing of centre back duos due to injuries. Jagielka had another injury in preseason, but should be back in less than two weeks. If Stones leave and all the chances are that he will, it will open a lot of space and more playing time to Ramiro Funes Mori. This 25 year old defender came from River Plate last season and played in 28 games for Everton in Premier League. His natural position is left back but due to lots of injuries he played as a centre back in many games. He was in the starting lineup in 24 games and even scored 4 goals. Ramiro had a tough summer, playing in Copa America for Argentina in all games, but eventually loosing in finals to China on penalties. He is very talented player and I think this season he will drastically improve, now that he has got used to Premier League football. With the money from Stones’ sale, they should buy one proven and experienced defender and I think Koeman will definitely do that to improve his defence. Mason Holgate is a 19 year old right-sided central defender but his best years are to come and needs experience.

Everton had the best side backs in the league two years ago with Baines and Coleman. They still play for this club, but they are not the same ones from two years ago. Leighton Baines covers the position of left back for Everton as he has done for past decade now. He was selected into the Premier League Team of the year twice in his career but this 31 year old player has recently had a lot of problems with injuries. A player who had 18 assists in 3 season (2011-2014), 9 assists in 2014/2015 season, played only 18 matches in whole Premier League last season and managed to get just 2 goals and 1 assist. He had one of the worst seasons as a member of Everton and his biggest problem is staying healthy. If he does that, he can definitely prove to be one of the best left backs in the league once again. His teammate on the other, right, side is Seamus Coleman. He is 4 years younger than Baines but unlike Baines he was selected into the Premier League team of the year just once. He also had a lot of problems with injuries, less than Baines, that caused him to miss 10 Premier League matches last year. For the player who used to score 5 goals, who used to assists more than 5 goals per season, last year’s stats were miserable. Only 1 goal with 3 assists in 28 games shows what kind of season Everton had. If he and Baines get back on their form when they were selected as best players on their positions, then this team can aim for big things.

Everton has a couple of very young and talented defenders who played in some matches last season due to injuries. Brandan Galloway, just 20 years old played in 15 games, Tyias Browning, 22 years old, played in 5 games and also another 22 years old player Matthew Pennington who played 4 matches. Two young defenders spent last season on loan, Luke Garbutt played 24 games for Fulham but has not been allocated a shirt number so could be on his way out. Jonjoe Kenny, just a 19 year old kid played in 17 games for Oxford United.

MIDFIELDERS

Two long time midfielders left the club this offseason, Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar when they were released. Everton’s midfield is a mixture of youth and talent combined with ages and experience. They have some very talented young players and one of them is Muhamed Besic. This 23-year old midfielder comes from Bosnia and Herzegovina and arrived at the club two seasons ago. An amazing talent, defensive skills and hustle, but his biggest problem throughout his career are injuries. He is just injured most of the time, which is keeping him off the field and causing him not to express his talent. Just today he picked up another injury and will be out for at least two weeks. He needs just one season without injuries to show the fans that he is capable of playing at high level and be top class player. But the big question is can he do it.

Ross Barkley is the only player besides Lukaku who had great last season and played great football. This 22 year old England player had already proven that he is one of the best young talents in the world and will soon be the part of a bigger club. He played all 38 games last season, scoring 8 and also assisting 8 more goals. Last season was kind of breaking the ice for him and he did a great job. Already United, City & Chelsea have shown a lot of interest in him, but he will stay in Everton kit for at least one more season. I expect great things from him next season, to be even better under a new manager and to cross the mark of 10 goals scored and assisted as well.

Their youngest player on the roster, just 18 years old, Tom Davies already made two appearances for the first team last season. He signed a new, 5 years, deal and Everton will look to make a star out of him. Another partially young player is James McCarthy who is 25 years old and plays in defensive midfield position. He made 29 appearances last season, scoring and also assisted 2 goals. Little more older and much more experienced is ex Manchester United player Tom Cleverley, who joined Everton last season. Once one of the biggest talents in England, he hasn’t lived up to the expectations and ended his United career. He had a couple of bad seasons in Manchester, playing below his abilities, but had a solid season in Everton. Played in 22 games, scoring 2 and assisting 4 goals. I think now that he got rid of the pressure of playing in United, he can be very useful and very good player for Koeman. Another ex Manchester United player, Darron Gibson is member of Everton. He had a very bad season, with lot of injuries playing only 7 Premier league matches. Last month he signed a new, 2 year, contract that will keep him in Everton until 2018. The player with the most experience and knowledge is definitely Gareth Barry. This 35 year old player spent all of his career playing in the Premier league (Aston Villa, Manchester City and Everton). He made just below 600 Premier League appearances and is the key player in mentoring these youngsters in Everton. Barry is just 2 games away from his 100th game in an Everton shirt in the Premier League and I think that will come soon. His role on the pitch is to be the mentor and leader to this team and he has done that in 33 Premier League matches last season. Another player over 30 years old and in midfield position is Aiden McGeady who spent last season on a loan but he hasn't been allocated a shirt number so looks like he is on his way out. Bryan Oviedo will surely get some minutes this season and be in Koeman’s plans.

The more attacking midfielders for Everton are Aaron Lennon, Kevin Mirallas and Gerard Deulofeu who often plays behind Lukaku. Aaron Lennon is a very experienced, fast and proven Premier League player and is well known for his appearances in a Tottenham shirt. He is maybe in his best football ages, just under 30 and he has a lot to show. He scored 5 goals this season, but I expect more assists from him in the upcoming season. Kevin Mirallas is a very quality player with great technique. Like most of the Everton players, he also had some problems with injuries and managed to play in 23 League matches. Very poor season for this top class player, scoring only 4 goals. He is the type of a player who you expect to score over 10 goals per season and I think this could be the year for that if he stays out of injuries. Gerard Deulofeu is mega talented and a great player who came from Barcelona. His biggest problem is that he failed to show all his potential and is one of those “lifetime talents”. Koeman is a manager who can turn him into the right direction and make a superstar of him. He is still very young with just 22 years on his shoulders and has a lot of time for improvement. Last season he ended up with 8 assists in Premier League, but for this season my expectations are over 10.

Everton have also just (2nd Aug) signed Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gueye from Aston Villa for £7m after triggering a release cause in his contract. Gueye has been allocated the No. 17 shirt and should help the defensive qualities in the middle of the park and is already used to Premier League football with impressive interception qualities and a great last season for Villa.

STRIKERS

The biggest mystery for Everton and biggest worries are about their best player and one of the best strikers in the world, Romelu Lukaku. Chelsea is showing a lot of interest in bringing back him to their squad and there was information that Everton is willing to sell him for the price of 70 million pounds that Chelsea are offering. If Lukaku leaves, Everton will must buy a quality striker and I would like to see Bony in their kit. What to say about Lukaku, a player who led Everton in scoring last season with 18 goals in 37 Premier League matches but also had 6 assists. He is a world-class player and if he leaves, Everton will have one big hole up front. Another striker is at the exit door. Oumar Niasse is very close of leaving the club (with no club shirt number awarded) and it’s only a matter of time when will that happen. Arouna Kone is the only striker left on the team that can play some quality minutes and score goals. He scored 5 and assisted 4 goals and if Lukaku leaves I think he can bring back his form from times when he was a scoring machine in Levante. The other strikers on the books: Niasse, McAleny & Rodriguez have all not been allocated shirt numbers so look like they are no longer wanted at the club. Everton also have a young 18 year old striker Bassala Sambou signed in June 2016 from Coventry but he will be looking to get some experience when given the chance.

2016/2017 EXPECTED LINEUP :

Lineup for the next season is very hard to predict because some players are close to leaving, but I think Koeman will use 4-2-3-1 formation :

Stekelenburg (Joel Robles)
Coleman, Jagielka, Funes Mori, Baines
Besic/Gueye, Barry/Cleverley
Lennon/Deulofeu, Barkley, Mirallas/Deulofeu
Lukaku(Kone)

FANTASY FOOTBALL

Players to look up for in Fantasy football :

Ross Barkley – One of the best young players in the world had a great last season with 8 goals and 8 assists and already has 2 goals in preseason. With an even better coach now, he will improve even more and will soon be on his way out of Everton to a bigger club. I expect nothing less than 10+ goals and over 10 assist for this upcoming season in Premier League. He has shown that he is not just talented, but also hard working and very disciplined player.

Gerard Deulofeu – This could be the season of breakthrough for this young magician. Last season he was very solid with 8 assists, but the caliber that this guy is, it’s only matter of time when he starts dominating the Premier League and he already has 3 goals in preseason. He is amazing at dribbling, passing and has great vision, but it’s just up to him to show the world what a class of a player he is and I think Koeman will improve his game a lot.

Coleman, Baines and Lukaku should also be on your radar but it might be wise to see how the defenders and midfield gel in their opening match before looking at Everton defenders but the club's next 9 fixtures don't look too onerous.

CURRENT INJURY LIST

Besic – knock – TWO WEEKS

I agree on deulofeu for this season, he got a fair few assists early in the season last year prior to falling out of the team. Under Koeman he's been very keen too impress, got plenty of early game time up front while Lukaku was off and has shown plenty of danger with his pace. His finishing isn't the best but his crossing is top draw and if he finds himself a regular starting spot he'll get plenty of points.

Hopefully the Stones saga comes to an end this week and we get Bony as part of the deal as well as sorting out a replacement centre back. If williams came his price of 5m would be on par with the Everton defence anyway.

Could be a back 3?

Would have to say Mori if 4 at the back as the other two are Koeman buys. Mori is actually a left back apparently so maybe Baines misses out?

Mori mostly played CB last season when he was covering for Jagielka. I wouldn't be surprised if Koeman tries some new schemes out, he did play with back 3 against Man Utd in Rooney's testimonial in the beginning - Stones, Mori and Holgate plus Baines and Coleman further up the flanks. So I wouldn't be surprised to see something similar at some point in the season, but I do think that he will start with a back 4 in the beginning.

They don't want to sell Jagielka either so I'd just stick to Baines and Coleman

So based on the above and comments on SkySports, I think the line-up today could be:

Stekelenburg (Joel Robles - most opinion is that he's the back-up keeper now but it's not certain)
Coleman (late fitness test), Jagielka (now fit), Funes Mori, Baines
Gueye, Barry
Deulofeu(Lennon), Barkley, Mirallas
Lukaku (late fitness test and hints are that Deulofeu could take his position if failed)

Ashley Williams not ready yet after his transfer from Swansea but should replace one of the CBs in a week or two. Expect Lennon to play some part today against his old club Spurs.

Is this really a necessary post?

If FootballWriter was doing his job as I envisage it, he'd be posting that just before the game yesterday Koeman said that it had just been discovered that Coleman's LFT had turned into something more serious and he'd miss the next few games. Even though we don't know how accurate Koeman was being, it's enough for me to transfer out my odd remaining Coleman asap.

The key word in the thread title, the forum and indeed in the entire point being "Expected". We need to know what the expected line ups and changes will be. What happened yesterday, in the context of this thread, is only relevant in terms of what it means for evertons next match. The inclusion of Holgate at CB for example, and McCarthy at RWB whilst Coleman out...

Line-up was:

M Stekelenburg, R Funes Mori, P Jagielka, M Holgate, I Gueye, J McCarthy, L Baines, G Barry (T Cleverley, 85), K Mirallas (A Lennon, 76), R Barkley, G Deulofeu (A Kone, 68)
Subs not used: B Galloway, J Robles, T Davies, B Oviedo

Winger Bolasie has arrive from Palace and Sunderland CB Kone likely on his way too. Ashley Williams (CB) may have match fitness and Lukaku (Str) may be fit enough for some time on the pitch. Koeman building for 3 strong CBs and 2 wing-backs.
