This is not a live version Sam (and I'm sure you found this already yourself) but still worth linking to so others can hear it...

Unsquare Dance - The Dave Brubeck Quartet

Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman - The Shape Of Jazz To Come 8-)

Well and trully before my time but still great music and great musicians. Many will not appreciate what influence late 50's jazz had on what was to follow...

Love those Brubeck classics - wonder if the handclapper still gets royalties :)

Dixieland style jazz was pretty big in that era too - I think if Kenny Ball had been a Yank he would have been a legend both sides of the Atlantic - Essex boy and still going strong today - what a trumpet player he used to be.

Sadly, at the age of 82, drummer Joe Morello died this week...
personal favourites by the Dave Brubeck Quartet:

Sad news, 82 is still young, although I suppose a good age. The good thing about Youtube and similar sites is that it ensures good music will live on forever.

He must have only been 32 in that video, although he looks in his 50's to me. :?

And now Dave Brubeck has gone, aged 91. RIP.

His music lives on, as links on this and previous page of topic may help prove.

Eye Level - Simon Park Orchestra. Not just a top 40, but was at number 1 for about a month in the early 70s.

I doubt any of those were even singles, let alone top 40 (same fro most of this thread??). There can't be many in modern times that do qualify. Other than stuff that is dancey (and forgettable ??) the last I can remember is Madness, Return of the Los Palmas 7 from 30 years ago.....

Ball

Post by SamD »

RIP, Kenny Ball: May 1930 - March 2013.

One of a trio of excellent British jazz band leaders who started out in the 1950s (alongside trombonist Chris Barber and clarinettist Acker Bilk), trumpeter Kenny Ball was versatile enough to remain popular during the Beatles era. This was due to his personality - he seemed to exude fun - as well as the addition of raucous vocals to his band's tunes.

He charted 13 times, Midnight in Moscow being his biggest hit: the link posted further above looks broken, unfortunately. Own favourite is Rondo, a positive, feel-good top 40 tune from 1963 (the clarinet is marvellous too):

Sad news indeed. :(

He seemed to be on the telly loads in the sixties. I still have a Golden Guinea album of his. :)

Wright

Post by SamD »

in Dec 2012, I wrote: ... Dave Brubeck has gone, aged 91. RIP.
And now, jazz bassist Eugene Wright, the last surviving member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s classic lineup, has died, aged 97. He also performed with Count Basie, Erroll Garner, Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker.

When Wright joined the group six decades ago, concert promoters baulked at hosting a black musician alongside the rest of the quartet. But Brubeck would refuse to perform without him.

Sad to hear. I see Brubeck's estate has put out a posthumous album that he recorded when he was 90 odd.
