Liverpool Fans' Most Popular Starting 11 for Aug.-Dec. 2013

Post by Garyalanlawro »

Liverpool fans’ most popular starting 11 for the first half of the season consisted of Simon Mignolet in goal, four defenders (Glen Johnson, Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Touré), four midfielders (Steven Gerrard, Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Leiva and Jordan Henderson) and unsurprisingly, two forwards (Luis Suárez and Daniel Sturridge).

Beat Your Manager! Fantasy Football is similar to “Football Manager for live football”, where you manage your favourite Club and pick lineups, bench, formations and substitutions, all in real-time. By playing the game, we can get a picture of the fan popularity of different players, by looking at how frequently they are selected for the lineup.

The data table is available for download at our blog (http://www.beatyourmanager.ie/blog) and lists the fan lineup choices for Liverpool for the first half of this season (Aug.-Dec. 2013); organised by Week number, Date, Opposition Team and Home/Away fixture across the top. The rest of the table is taken up by percentages – these are the percentage of Liverpool fans playing Beat Your Manager! Fantasy Football who selected that player for their lineup for that match. The players are sorted by median popularity, rather than average - we could have used the average, but as some players register a zero percentage rating for some games (due to injury or suspension), we felt the median was a more reliable estimate.

We have ignored the ratings for Andre Wisdom, Dani Pacheco, Samed Yesil and Jay Spearing as they were available for very few matches and those results may not be an accurate estimate of their popularity. We also forgot to record the scores for the Sun. Sept. 1st match against Manchester United – sorry about that!

So, what does the data tell us? Straight off, Simon Mignolet was the clear fan favourite in goal, with an inclusion rating of 83%, almost 5 times more popular than his colleague Brad Jones (17%).

Steven Gerrard and Luis Suárez are jointly Liverpool’s most popular players – selected for 100% of lineups for games in which they are available.

Glen Johnson was clearly Liverpool’s most popular defender (and 4th-most popular player) with 87% of fans picking him for the lineup, with Martin Skrtel (71%), Mamadou Sakho (69%) and Kolo Touré (68%) all on pretty similar approval ratings with fans. After Touré, Agger (63%) and José Enrique (54%) were the only other defenders to register any substantial score with Liverpool fans.

After Steven Gerrard, Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Leiva were Liverpool’s next candidates for midfield, with approval ratings of (85%) and (84%) respectively. Jordan Henderson was Liverpool’s fourth-choice midfielder, with a selection frequency of 80% with fans. Henderson clearly beats both Raheem Sterling (35%) and Victor Moses (32%), his nearest competitors with fans for a place in the midfield popularity stakes.

Upfront, the by-now famous “SAS” partnership of Luis Suárez and Daniel Sturridge was nearly always the fans choice every time both were available. Sturridge was Liverpool’s 3rd-most popular player overall, with an 89% popularity rating. Liverpool’s only other striker of note, Iago Aspas only made it into the lineups of 36% of fans – and then usually only when one of Suárez/Sturridge was unavailable through injury or suspension.

We have included all 11 players and their average popularity ratings in a pitch-view on our blog. I would have thought Sterling would be 1st choice in our midfield tbh.

Hey Achiles74,

Yeah, its interesting you say that - I hadn't thought to look at it until you brought it up.

The data already published is from the 1st half of the season (Aug.-Dec.); when I look at Sterling's data from Jan.-Mar., he's more than twice as popular, with a median selection rate of 74%. On Sat. 7th Dec. Home to West Ham, half the Liverpool fans playing our game had him in the lineup; the first time he came close to his opening day 48%. After that West Ham game, his popularity only dips below 57% once (Away to West Brom), and he averages being selected for the lineup nearly three-quarters of the time.

We'll be publishing the current dataset for the 2nd half of the season later, but I can give you Sterling's most up-to-date numbers here:
Week Day/Date Opposition H/A Popularity (Lineup)
15 Sat. 7 Dec. West Ham United H 50%
16 Sun. 15 Dec. Tottenham Hotspur A 57%
17 Sat. 21 Dec. Cardiff City H 84%
18 Thurs. 26 Dec. Manchester City A 75%
19 Sun. 29 Dec. Chelsea A 88%
20 Wed. 1st Jan. Hull City H 92%
21 Sun. 12 Jan. Stoke City A 66%
22 Sat. 18th Jan. Aston Villa H 68%
23 Tue. 28th Jan. Everton H 76%
24 Sun. 2 Feb. West Bromwich Albion A 49%
25 Sat. 8th Feb. Arsenal H 74%
26 Sun. 12 Feb. Fulham A 73%
27 Sun. 23 Feb. Swansea City H 80%
28 Sat. 1 Mar. Southampton A 83%
29 No Match
30 Sun. 16 Mar. Manchester United A 74%

Thanks for the interest! There's loads of interesting observations to be drawn from the data and we just haven't had time to think of all of them. Keep the questions coming in and we'll do our best to answer them asap.

Hey all,
We wrote up an updated version of this post for Newstalk's "Off The Ball" radio show; you can read the full text of their take on it here:

We'll probably do a similar round-up of this data in five games time, when we'll all know the outcome of the title race - should make for interesting reading!
