Tour de France Heaven and Hell
OK - inspired by track racings 'Devil' races (Devil takes the hindmost - each lap sees someone eliminated until only one remains) does anyone fancy a TdF Devil race? Of course if we're going to do a Devil, then why not do a reverse Devil as well (an Angel??)
for anyone that's got no idea what I'm on about - 2 separate side comps, TdF Heaven and TdF Hell
For each stage of the Tour, Pick a rider for the Heaven Comp, and a rider for the Hell comp. you can't pick the same rider as someone else in the same comp (first come first served, but you can't pick before the previous stage finishes), but you can pick the same rider for both if you really want to. If you're daft enough to think that Roglic is both the most likely to finish at the front and the most likely to finish at the back then who am I to disagree.
In Hell - the last placed rider of those chosen is eliminated by Didi the Devil
In Heaven - the first placed rider of those chosen is eliminated by Our Lady of Ventoux
Smallprint:
Position on the road at the finish counts, ie if the grupetto is all timed out and 2 people have chosen riders who missed the time cut then only the last person on the road is eliminated in the Hell race, not all of them.
If your rider DNF's you stay in but get a strike (except on the final day of the comp - see below)
If you're unlucky enough to get three strikes then you're a danger to yourself and you're thrown out. This doesn't effect the 'normal' elimination for that day
if we have to have a rest day to make up for serial crashers then fine - I'll add a rest day somewhere along the line.
On the final race day, if you DNF you're out, whether you have any strikes or not. If you both DNF, then in Hell the one that bails first is eliminated, and in Heaven the one that bails last is eliminated.
entries all to be made prior to the start of the stage in question, but after the completion of the previous stage (ie picks for stage 3 have to be made after the last rider crosses the line on stage 2 but before they roll out for the start of stage 3 (before the neutral zone))
if less entries than the number of stages, we'll have a few rest days. If more then we'll have a few double eliminations. if no-one else enters I win everything
final day will be the penultimate day of the tour, so that the two winners can enjoy the champagne on the way to Paris without fighting for the stage win.

Re: Tour de France Heaven and Hell
well not if you want to win.
1 rider each day in each comp - pick one you think will do well (for the Devil race - ie Hell) and one you think will be in the grupetto (for the Angel race, ie Heaven). Once you get eliminated, thats it. Game over, back to training camp to see Dr Ferrari
easy

Great idea
Not sure I’ll be around every day of the Tour though. What’d happen when someone misses a day - travel, life, forgetfulness, etc.?

well probably something like you keep the previous days selection. seems fair enough and the whole thing is random enough that you shouldn't get much of an advantage with doing that.Smurphy's Paw wrote: ↑16 Aug 2020, 22:52 Great idea

Re: Tour de France Heaven and Hell
It does
It changes the nature a bit from ‘play every day’ to potentially ‘set and forget’ for a few days at a time. Pros and cons of that.
I’m interested.

So what happens if I pick a bloke for Day 2 that someone had on Day 1 who then doesn't turn up on Day 2?unc.si. wrote:well probably something like you keep the previous days selection. seems fair enough and the whole thing is random enough that you shouldn't get much of an advantage with doing that.Smurphy's Paw wrote: ↑16 Aug 2020, 22:52 Great idea

Re: Tour de France Heaven and Hell
OK but that doesn't block anyone else from picking them. They don't know if you're going to turn up or not, so everyone gets a free pick each day (first come first serve on that day). If you don't turn up you keep yesterdays pick. If someone else has picked that rider, and that rider happened to be the eliminated one, then you would be the one to go, not the person that picked that rider specifically for that day.Smurphy's Paw wrote: ↑16 Aug 2020, 23:29 It does

ie the idea is that everyone makes a pick every day, but if someone forgets there's a safety net so you don't just get kicked out, but you're at higher risk of being eliminated if you do forget to pick.

Re: Tour de France Heaven and Hell
see above. it would be a valid pick, but effectively you can't get eliminated (which you could try to 'game' but of course you won't know that someone isn't going to make a pick until the last minute).murf wrote: ↑16 Aug 2020, 23:45So what happens if I pick a bloke for Day 2 that someone had on Day 1 who then doesn't turn up on Day 2?unc.si. wrote:well probably something like you keep the previous days selection. seems fair enough and the whole thing is random enough that you shouldn't get much of an advantage with doing that.Smurphy's Paw wrote: ↑16 Aug 2020, 22:52 Great idea

All makes sense. Advantage to the one who has made a daily pick. No auto elimination when life gets in the way

Would it be more fun to just have an alphabetical/random list of domestiques and allocate them one at a time to the absentees?

I had completely forgotten about it to be honest and I'm off out on my bike soon so don't have time now.
to be honest, the Tour probably won't get finished. maybe Next year. No way this could compete with theo's game anyway
