In that case I'll just book a seat in the non-moving first class section.

Scenario:

Wayne Rooney is driving in a car at a constant speed. On his left side is a valley and on his right side is a fire engine travelling at the same speed as him. In front of him is a galloping pig which is the same size as his car and he cannot overtake it. Behind him is a helicopter flying at ground level.

Both the giant pig and the helicopter are also travelling at the same speed as him. How does Rooney get out of this situation?

[dull science pedantry]Actually the fire engine will be travelling at a slower speed if its on his inside.[/dull scince pedantry]

surely it'll be travelling faster if it's on the inside.

The fire engine and Rooney will take the same time to complete a full circle, but being on the outside, Rooney will have travelled further. Therefore Rooney must be going faster.

Where exactly does it say that Rooney is on the outside? Read the question FFS! Everyone knows that merrygorounds turn anti-clockwise with the riders facing the same way.

Correct the linear velocity (that speed to you num-nuts) will be less, as the fire engine will be on the inside, however, it is clear from the question that angular velocity is actually being refered to, and these are of course equal.

the thing is

1. the conveyer belt moves opposite at the same speed BUT and a big BUT.....this does not have enough force to stop the plane going forwards (i.e. exactly the same as the ice wouldn;t if it went in the reverse direfction)

2. the plane would fly

If the plane does take off, then whats the big fuss about all these jet powered on the spot take off jets? Why dont they just bung a big conveyor belt on these war ships?

the conveyor belt still needs to be as long as the runway is.

Or a tad longer (to compensate for the very slight reduction in acceleration due to extra friction with the wheels spinning twice as fast as usual).
