The Argos Book
No surprise really, when it was announced that this week that the Argos book would no longer produced. It's a sign of the times, as Prince would say. We live in a digital age and a big, clunky old book is not worth the hassle when you've got the whole catalogue available at your fingertips on your mobile phone.
It did make me remenisce though. Anyone remember as a kid looking trough the toys section ? I'm thinking late 70s/early 80s - looking at the electronic games like Missile Strike and Astro Wars. The big four lane Scalextrics, all of the Star Wars accessories and so on... and dreaming in the run up to Xmas ? Even up until recently, it would still be nice to flick through the pages when comparing items.
Always remember my Nan or Mom saying "The new Argos book is out, do you want me to get you one " Or you would go into the store and there would be a small bungalow's worth of books by the entrance and a gaggle of grannies helping themselves. Ahhhh.
Understandable but sad to see it go
...but, there is a website where you recapture those golden moments :-

Just lose yourself, as Eminem would say.
Oh yeah, and I did I mention that even Holly Willoughby is in there ? I won't say which section

Re: The Argos Book
Thanks for posting that it certainly does conjure up some memories for me from the 70's. Mostly looking at camping, fishing, tools and electronics at that time in my life. I was resident in the UK then.

Re: The Argos Book
Had to google Holly Willoughby as not in my generation. She is easily young enough to be my daughter.

Re: The Argos Book
Shopping online just isn't the same. Remember a few years back trying to browse Argos stuff online and gave up and dragged the book out. I find it much easier to see the options on paper.
Online is fine is you havd something very specific in mind but if you just want 'a hoover' then much easier in a book.
If I was them I'd still do books on request just not have them in big stacks in stores.

Must cost a fair bit to produce and with profit margins no doubt being squeezed , it was an easy money saver

The stats are dark and full of errors.
Re: The Argos Book
More of a 90s memory for me, but looking back at the console and computer pages and especially at the boxes of blank floppy disks and storage cases took me back (I remember owning several of the exact ones in the catalogue)!

‘Mummy, why are the pages of the book in the shop laminated?’

Love that, Romyn. My wife makes that joke and had never told me where it came from

Green Shield Stamps brings back some memories. Used to go to the shop in the Bull Ring in Brum. My mom used to collect vouchers out of cigarette packets as well.

Thought that was going to be the one about waiting in the chairs for your number to come up being like a theatre for proles (can't remember which comedian that was)RomynPG wrote: ↑01 Aug 2020, 11:41Smurphy's Paw wrote: ↑01 Aug 2020, 11:33 ‘Mummy, why are the pages of the book in the shop laminated?’
