Re: who's online
I don't know the details, but Search Engines have a presence and a fair few of this thread's views are Bots.

Re: who's online
Nope.
I'm real (I know hard to believe ) but Bots aren't, but show up as views.
Start a thread called Please don't read and explain why in title or 1st message and watch it crank up views....
Admin et al may be able to explain how Search Engine Bots work....

Re: who's online
just googled this:
What are bots?
On a very high level, a bot is conversational software.
They are computer programs capable of understanding a query (question, command, order, etc.) from a human (or another bot, inception) and deliver the appropriate response (answer, action, etc.).
I'm so steve nieve

Re: who's online
They just search the Web for keywords from popular sites down to less popular (I think)

Re: who's online
They tend to be search engine indexers, aka crawlers or spiders. All they are doing is following the links on all the pages, getting the text and providing it to Google, Bing etc so it can be analysed and become searchable on the search engines.
They aren't bots in the nefarious "russian Twitter bot" sense of the word, but they are automated applications that just follow links to download (public) content.

Re: who's online
So they are not actually posting on threads then ?Mav3rick wrote: β25 Jun 2020, 20:06 They tend to be search engine indexers, aka crawlers or spiders. So can bots glean information from lurkers or do you have to be logged in ??blahblah wrote: β25 Jun 2020, 20:17Definitely not. Re: who's online
The bots mentioned in the OP don't tend to collect information about you personally, that's done (for the purposes of targeted advertising) through JavaScript that loads in your browser when you visit sites that use advertising.
The sites you visit will load scripts from a central place (such as Google) which keeps track of your visits (anonymised but individual data).
The bots in question here are for indexing FISO rather than for getting info about us as individuals.

Re: who's online
Well you can track an awful lot of useful data through those JavaScript includes so the big brother tag isn't entirely unwarranted.
Web analytics is a major business and you may (or may not) be surprised just how much information site owners and advertising agencies have about you as an individual (although not an identified person).
The difference is it's data that you're voluntarily sending the collectors through your browsing, rather than bots following you around and "watching", if that makes sense.
You can usually avoid it by using those annoying cookie dialogs to opt out of personalised advertising, or just use private browsing or setup your browser to clear cookies each time you close it.

Re: who's online
One or two of these indexing bots (spiders) have caused fiso to go very slow a few times in the past when they've tried to continuously index every page so I've had to manually ban their IP address. The phpbb software does recognise most bots hence why they are listed on the 'who is online' info.
