Jazz

Post by blahblah »

Do we have any gurus? (I cnt spell connoisseurs)

Its something, like Classical, that I've wanted to get into, and there is fook else to do...

I'm currently on Charlie Mingus Quartet"s Chazz which is quite foot tapping as is his Blues and Roots.

I'm sure there must be different genres etc?

His "The Impulse Story" is decidedly pleasant too.

I'll be posting a link to my top 100 (and/or 200 if I have enough time or inclination) albums sometime soon in the music forum, I'm mainly a rock fan but have quite a few jazz albums too - Mingus "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" will be in the top ten, but is more avant garde so maybe not for everyone! Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is the biggest selling jazz album ever for good reasons, you may well have it already, and will have heard it many times maybe without realising (it turns up as backing music, recently on a beatles documentary for example) and will also be in my chart, as will John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme".
You'll hear a fair bit of newer jazz if you listen to 6 music - the Moses Boyd new album is a personal favourite, as are The Comet Is Coming's two albums from last year.

Ah, they were the only 2 I could think of, and first should shut up rather than do a "cool" voice. Ditto Craig Charles who plays some great stuff.

definitely no connoisseur, but Jazz has always been there in the background for me since I was an 18 year old living away from home for the first time, working as an apprentice engineer, into Post Punk, Ska, Daydream Nation and Surfer Rosa.
Every Thursday night was Jazz night though. Live Jazz at the local Irish club. Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald and Mingus records nestling between Nick Cave and the Sugarcubes. Pure accident really. Like most things in life it started with a girl. She was into jazz so took her there. The girl didn't last long but the jazz did :-)

Think quizkings list says it all really. I know you know all about A Love Supreme and Kind of Blue, but personal favourites of mine apart from Miles and Coltrane would be Solo Monk (definitely an essential listen), Brubeck quartets Time Out, Nina Simone (sort of jazz - near enough anyway) Silk and Soul, Ella Plays the Cole Porter songbook and Keith Jarretts Koln concert (flagged on here years ago by someone - maybe Billy Whiz?)

plus Tom Waits Nighthawks at the diner (as far as I'm concerned its a Jazz album), and if you've never heard Bitches Brew then give it a go - it might just change your life :-)

Hmmmm. So not the "bunny" girl that got Scott into Jacques Brel? (I seriously struggle with the idea of him in one, but then I'm gullible...)

Tom is as interesting as the jazz\blues divide\unison. I'm on the the unison side with Closing Time and Blue Valentine being so very good and close to Kind of Blue etc.

Tom is so interesting as his music is back to front i.e. starting as a crooner and moving to industrial jazz etc?

How I hate an ex who said: "I nearly got us tickets to Tom Waits"

Honorable mention for Soft Machine who from their 3rd album in particular invented prog/jazz which got jazzier with each subsequent release. They were awesome and also when I saw them a couple of years back the loudest band I have ever seen.

Also worth checking out is Neil Ardley who did some amazing stuff in the seventies sometimes in collaboration with Ian Carr (the man behind Nucleus another pioneering jazz/prog/fusion combo) and also was the man behind much of the writing for the Dorling Kindersley "The Way Things Work " books.

Just a thought but could this be moved to the "music" forum as would fit there perhaps? As and when we're busier after this lockdown, would be easier to find then,

The featured album on tonight's freak zone has been jan garbarek's "whichi -tai -to" from 1974, one of my favourites from the seventies

Still think this thread should be in the music section!
