Almost scammed!

Post by Spinynorman »

To cut a very complicated story short it went like this:

Received an e-mail from Virgin Media saying that due to my old debit card expiring (which it has) my most recent payment had not been processed and services would end on the last day of the month.

There was a link to my Virgin account to click on.

Clicked on it and I was taken to the Virgin Media log in page.

Logged in and was asked for my card details and then my bank account details.

It was only at this point that I thought something was odd. Why bank and card details and also a realisation that I pay by direct debit.

Closed it all down and rang Virgin who said that all my payments were okay and that they would never send out an e-mail regarding this.

I was only a couple of clicks away from disaster. Everything looked just as it does when I log in and access my account/preferences.

It was a bit scary.

How did they know your card had expired - or did they get lucky???

I've no idea. Maybe they always say that and hope to get lucky.

Honestly, the b’stards are so clever

I get text updates from Barclays when I add a new payee etc. Those texts are still on my phone. On the SAME NUMBER I got a message saying there was unusual activity on my account and to ring this number immediately. Luckily it sounded a bit suspicious, so I googled the number, and it wasn’t Barclays! what!? Barclays fraud dept said they can now clone texts, jeez.

So I guess never ring or open anything from a message, always dial direct or go to the website independently.

Just to add to this, if anyone receives an e-mail from HMRC saying they are entitled to a tax refund, then bin it.
