Should have been a goal but Martial wimped out.
That's a bit harsh! Should have gone with his right foot to make any ricochet more likely to head goalwards, but he risked and took a smash into the post..

Yes, though the difference in ambitions there is probably indicative of your perception of the relative abilities of the clubs right now.

There are too many long words in there for FISO.

Still, Citeh can hand Lpool the title without making them win another match which is kinda cool?

murf wrote: 08 Mar 2020, 18:55 Just proves what we keep saying - they are half decent players. Doesn't need a good manager to motivate them against the local rivals. It is the other matches where Ole needs to earn his corn.

Didn't see much of it but Fernandes looks good.
Doesn't prove that as that isn't what "you" (i.e. most) kept saying at all!!!

The players that are now making the difference are the ones Ole has identified and have come in while he has been there. Fernandes has been a revelation (he looks like he will be for us what KDB is for City), AWB is arguably the best defensive RB in the Prem right now, Maguire has steadied the ship and brought organisational stability to the back line that Smalling couldn't, some of the bad apples have been lanced and McTominay and Williams are revelling under Ole and are going to save us a fortune.

Yes, Fred Shaw and Lindelöf look like new players and even Matic seems to have re-found his mojo, but what Ole has done is move on players without the right quality / character (Lukaku, Sanchez, Fellaini, Rojo, Smalling etc with the likes of Pogba / Lingard to follow) and replace them with a few who do have the right quality and character (still a few like Herrera and Lukaku / Sanchez that still need replacing but hopefully that will come in the summer).

Players > Motivaton > Tactics

I'm not bitter at all; United's continued demise is a source of never ending enjoyment for me, and most non Man U fans. Even the odd false dawn is welcome, as it means Ole's job will remain safer, and we all want him to stay at the helm. As for united being (apparently) on the up, I think Yazz had a song about why that may be!

Pleased to see Woodward getting the plaudits for the signings he's made. Oh, wait, I forgot:

- Good transfer activity = Praise for Ole
- Bad transfer activity = Criticism for Ed

Mustn't forget, as it's such a simple rule.

United were a lot better against City, but they've always been better when they can sit back and hit on the break. Surely three wins in a row isn't too much to ask before a team is considered to have turned it around.

When he left they brought in Ole who is trying to do something pretty much the opposite. He gave Lukaku a go and funnily enough he had a great game away at Arsenal in that formation. But we've since found out he was already agitating for a move. With the club zigzagging from one type of manager to another there's always going to be player casualties who don't fit in with the new broom.
But why did he want a move? Because he was playing for a crap team, with a crap manager, who wasn't picking him? Can't recall the order exactly but Solskjaer didn't pick him from the start did he? He wasn't picking him because he wanted to play a certain way and that's that, even though it's players > whatever >whatever, isn't it?

Either way, he had a great scoring record for United, and this season they've struggled for goals. Now he's banging them in for fun in Serie A and United fans get to watch the turgid crap that results in 41 goals in 29 games, including no goals against a whole load of struggling sides. Probably the "United Way" TM, I guess.
After scoring 1 goal in games vs the big 6 in his last two seasons at Man Utd, Romelu Lukaku has scored 1 goal in 9 games vs Serie A’s top 4 and Barcelona & Dortmund in the Champions League. This goal came against a backup Barcelona XI in the last group game.

A weakness remains

Plenty of flat tracks that need bullying.

United (and others) regularly struggle to put these sides to the sword, especially when they function better as a counter-attacking team.

Not ideal to have 2 versions of your team but....

United definitely need a centre forward this summer but it won't be someone like Lukaku. Needs to have decent pace, be mobile enough to run defenders into channels but also be in the 6 yard box when it matters. Ruud c.2001 springs to mind but there's not many of those around. Werner in Germany seems to be the up and comer, linked with all the top teams and seemingly at a club who will sell. Might even have Woody's beloved release clause.

But that's the point!

We have functioned better as a counter attacking team in the recent past precisely because we haven't had the world class quality up top or in creative midfield especially to play a more controlled possession and high press game.

Just look at how different we are playing now just by adding Fernandes to the team. You put a natural no.9 in front of him without the first touch of a rapist and add Rashford and Pogba (or preferably replacement - Grealish and Sancho with a bit more cash of course with maybe Bellingham for a year or two's time) to the mix and suddenly you're dominating games and challenging again.

There we go. Dream = reality now and 11 games unbeaten.

Shame all football has paused really as we had momentum on our side finally. In the meantime Jose continues to drag Spurs down which is a shame!

Why so shy junior? There's probably more LFC fans than United fans contributing to this thread! Running the full gamut of partisanship from reasonable to bellendrical. Sometimes it's knockabout, 99% of the time it's interesting debate BUT it is pertinent to know if someone is an LFC fan, probably more than any other club.
