The United dilemma

Post by Zimmerman »

So then United fans... like asking whether you’d rather eat sick or #%^*

Which is it to be... the old enemy or the noisy neighbours with their financial doping?

The fact City can’t do the quadruple takes one dilemma away / whether that would have outweighed Liverpool going 29+ years is another discussion.

Does the impact on Uniteds immediate future have any bearing on your thoughts? ie no CL footy... does that limit the players you can attract as part of the rebuilding etc etc.

Nothing is assured no matter what happens tonight (for Liverpool, City or United) but it will have a massive say at this stage of the season.

At the moment any win is a much needed win?

Maybe it’s anecdotal... but ‘everyone’ I speak to, says ‘every united fan they know’ wants to lose.

Lose and they’ll be six points behind Spurs (with 9 available).

Spurs 70
Chelsea 67
Arsenal 66+
United 64+

They still have to play Chelsea so that one just about remains in their own hands even if they lose to City, but they would be reliant on a capitulation from one half of North London.

Don't forget (admittedly a few year's back) Liverpool just needed to roll over to King Kenny's Blackburn on the final day of the season to give them the title over United.

Liverpool had more honour than that though and promptly beat Blackburn (much to the dismay of many fans) - fortunately United couldn't beat West Ham so lost out anyway

Andy Cole missed 4 open goals though. He did score 1 in 5 in his defence.

I think we all wanted to win but losing doesn't feel as bad as it should

A sign of how far the club you support has fallen that your pleasure now is in others (potentially) losing rather than your club winning!

There is an element of truth in that. It's always been nice to see liverpool 'slip' up, but now it's the main source of interest at the top of the table.

I've met plenty of Everton supporters who have been the same for years!

That’s fair enough. That’s what a proper rivalry should be about.

I’ve spent 20 odd years getting respite from whomever could stop Fergie/United.

Everton have never been a consideration because of their lack of competitive relevance. Maybe if I lived in Liverpool I’d have a different view/experience... but to me, they’re just an annoyance. Whereas United are much more than that.

I think/assume it’s the same with United and their city rivals. So long in the wilderness, they’re not seen as a proper rival (even now). Obviously that will change... but recent weeks has demonstrated the current dislike hierarchy.

Yeah, it will take a long time, if it ever happens, for the United-City rivalry to overtake United-Liverpool - there’s a lot of factors behind that, including historical success and the natural rivalry between the two neighbouring cities.

Curiously they’ve very rarely finished first and second, or competed directly in title races, despite being the two most successful teams in English football, as they seem to have alternating spells of supremacy and mediocrity... of course, if United remain stuck in a rut and City and Liverpool between them dominate the next decade, another rivalry will come to the fore.

It won't change. United fans can easily dismiss City for the Abu Dhabi PR vehicle they are. If Liverpool win the league this season it'll be richly deserved, they've bought well, sold brilliantly, appointed a good manager, backed him and played great attacking football. Come on City!!

EDIT: of course all those things could apply to City but we all know why they're fake.
