Bundesliga Preview: Matchday 3 (19/08/11 - 21/08/11)

Post by Totelfootball »

Hi Guys.

Uwe Webbmuller here. Gianni asked me to cast an eye over the 3rd set of fixtures for the Bundesliga. I have spotted a trend that may be worth keeping in mind for all you fantasy football fans who are turning your thoughts to the players that will make it into your teams this weekend.

We start with the Friday night fixture where Monchengladbach host Wolfsburg. These two teams should provide some entertainment if past games are anything to go by.They have never had a goal-less draw when opposing so hopefully there will be some goals to savour.Wolfsburg are bolstered by their signing of Thomas Hitzlberger. With 3 points they trail their hosts by a point.

Champions Borussia Dortmund take on Nurnburg on Saturday afternoon optimistic of recovering from last week’s reversal to Hoffenheim. They have cause to be confident with an unbeaten sequence of 17 at the Signal Iduna Park and 4 clean sheets from their last 5 against their visitors. Both sides go into the match on 3 points.

Hamburg face the daunting task of playing Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena where they will have painful memories of last season’s 6-0 thrashing.Prospects look bleak as Bayern have never lost their opening 2 home games and Hamburg have not won any of their last 9 Bundesliga fixtures. The one crumb of comfort for Hamburg is that they have triumphed at the Allianz twice before- the only team to do so.Indeed they were the first to hand Bayern a defeat at their new home in 2006.

Werder Bremen v Freiburg would appear to be a very likely home victory when you consider that Bremen have won their last 6 matches with Freiburg by a margin of 22 goals. Depressing for Freiburg fans who may especially fear Claudio Pizarro who has enjoyed success against them in each of his last 12 matches!Freiburg are looking for their first win of the season but the omens are not so good for that.

Elsewhere an injury hit Hoffenheim ,fresh from their victory over champions Borussia Dortmund last week,go to Augsburg who have Sascha Moders in top form at present with 3 goals to date.Hoffenheim will similarly be hoping that Sejad Salijovic can continue his scoring form.Hoffenheim are a point ahead of their hosts after 2 rounds of matches.

Stuttgart entertain Bayer Leverkusen and go into the match with some injury concerns particularly in defence.Bayer will look to add to their 3 point tally and can point to an excellent record over the years when playing Stuttgart .So good prospects for the visitors ,perhaps.

Cologne have had a miserable start conceding 8 goals in just 2 fixtures .Already they will be feeling pressure .Next up for them is the home game against Kaiserslautern in the Saturday evening kick off .Kaiserslautern are unbeaten in 5 against their opponents. This may be a good opportunity for them to get their first win of season against a Cologne side reeling from their destruction at the hands of Schalke.

Speaking of Schalke ,they take on Mainz this Sunday.Mainz are looking to preserve their 100% start to the season but it won’t be easy.Schalke have a good record against them and there are some injury worries.

Finally Hannover 96 are at home to face Hertha Berlin this Sunday. Some record has to go here because Hannover defend the Bundesliga’s only other 100% record while Hertha are unbeaten away from home for a remarkable 12 games.Added to that they have a great record against Hannover winning 9 of the last 16 meetings and only losing 3.

A number of the visiting teams this weekend possess very good records against their immediate opponents and there is the interesting prospect of a few more away teams being victorious than normal.Schalke,Hertha Berlin,Leverkusen,Kaiserslautern and even Hamburg with their 2 Allianz arena wins can all enter the matches with optimism.
