Gameweek 16 Open

Post by Totelfootball »

After a midweek fix of Carling Cup action we turn our heads back to the Premier League. As there is no early Saturday afternoon kick-off in the Premier League this weekend, our competition has a full fixture list to choose from, meaning you can choose players for your fantasy side from each and every Premier League team.

If you are a regular reader of this column you will be aware of our tipping prowess, unfortunately last weekend we suffered a costly blip by suggesting a series of losing wagers. Our most pathetic effort came in the form of Blackburn +1 at 3/1 vs Manchester United, Blackburn lost 7-1. We promise to up our game this weekend so let’s see if we can warm your spirits during the big freeze.

The Carling Cup witnessed the happy Hammers maul an under-strength Manchester United, Fergie will not have been too perturbed by his side’s cup exit; although the manner and margin of defeat surely casts doubt on the strength of United’s next generation. The club’s policy of investing in potential rather than the finished product is admirable, however, United appear to be gambling dangerously if they believe the likes of Obertan and Bebe will ably replace legends like Scholes and Giggs. They travel to Blackpool on Saturday, established stars such as Rooney, Nani and Vidic will return to the side and their skinny quote of 4/11 is justified. Better value is to be had in the total goals market, 5 or more is priced at 3/1 and warrants bet of the weekend status. The aforementioned Rooney and Nani are our fantasy suggestions from this match.

Wigan host Stoke and we think Tony Pulis’ men can reap more misery on the Latics. Stoke have secured 10 of the last 12 points on offer, whilst Wigan are stumbling from defeat to defeat. Martinez’s men have major suspension and injury concerns, their only striker available for selection appears to be Franco Di Santo so they won’t offer much of a threat to a tight opposition defence. Take Stoke at 7/4 to return to winning ways after their creditable draw with Manchester City last weekend. Matt Etherington and Ryan Shawcross are the men for our fantasy team.

In the Carling Cup Aston Villa were unlucky losers against rivals Birmingham, star striker Agbonlahor returned to goalscoring ways in a promising display. This weekend Houllier squares up to his old club Liverpool, the Reds will be without the inspirational figures of Carragher and Gerrard and their combined absence could be crucial. We can’t see Vila losing this one, but we are not convinced enough to say they will definitely win, the answer to our conundrum is provided by Villa +1 at 13/10. Ciaran Clark and Stewart Downing are the fantasy duo we’ll include.

Chelsea and Everton are both struggling for form, they clash at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Lampard remains sidelined whilst Terry and Essien should be available once again. It is difficult to make a confident selection in this one and we suspect David Moyes will be happy to escape with a draw, Everton simply have to improve on their desperate showing against West Brom. The draw is priced at a big 7/2 and that is where our money will be going, we suggest yours does too. The goalless draw could be a big player in this game so we’ll opt for Ashley Cole and Branislav Ivanovic to complete our fantasy defence.

This weekend’s competition kicks off as always at 3pm on Saturday and concludes with Monday’s televised clash of Liverpool vs Aston Villa. So come in from the cold and heat up your weekend with a fantasy bet at TotelFootball.
