Goalkeepers

Post by swadd1er » 29 Jul 2019, 13:33

We need to discuss goalkeepers.

High value and a 4.0
2 rotating 4.5's
A mid value and a 4.0
1st and 2nd keeper from same team

Have Button and Ryan at the moment but I was kindly reminded in the FPL Questions about their form at the end of last season.

The 5.0 keepers are ones I'm looking at. Will start with Ryan/Button for now

if there a risk with Button that so many have him (23.9% currently) that he is more prone to dropping to 3.9 and screwing you over further down the line if you do need to move him on? If you are setting and forgetting a 6.0 and a 4.0 would it be better to go for one of the other four 4.0s?

I think it is possible, I'm sure its hit me in the past. The danger is minimal as the vast majority of people aren't moving their 4.0 keeper outside of a WC which won't affect their price and you shouldn't be moving them outside of your WC either. Small risk but a pointless one imo unless you are going Ryan/Button

I guess the only real risk is if one of the other 4.0m GK's starts in GW1. At which point virtually everybody on Button, who's paying attention, will shift quickly to hopefully capitalise on a price rise on the playing 4.0m and thus dropping Buttons price to 3.9m.

Cannot manage every position, not enough time. So GK will be a set and forget, whatever I do. Not yet convinced by any 4.5, so it is Pickford or Ederson at the moment.

Hmmm, I have just been looking at the stats for GK's and NO Gk's got a Red card last season (excluding the promoted, relegated and sold ones).

From the same list here are the Saves per Match:
Hart 4.05
Fabianski 3.89
Foster 3.37
Leno 3.33
Heaton 3.32
Guaita 3.28
Boruc 3.25
de Gea 3.24
McCarthy 3.12
Lloris 3.03
Ryan 2.85
Gunn 2.75
Patrício 2.62
Dubravka 2.53
Hennessey 2.51
Pickford 2.47
Begovic 2.46
Schmeichel 2.37
Kepa 2.28
Alisson 2.00
Ederson 1.53

I'm sure it is useful, I just haven't worked out how\why yet

Except that the top of the certain to play is hardly a surprise? And the one above him is a bit of a shock?

I definitely agree Button is the most likely 4m GK to drop, but at the same time the problem is the lack of 2nd choice GKs at that price. There's only five 4.0m GKs in the game:

Button (2nd choice, Brighton)
Norris (3rd choice behind Ruddy, Wolves)
Stekelenburg (3rd choice now Lossl has arrived, Everton)
McGovern (3rd choice now Fährmann has arrived, Norwich)
Woodman (3rd/4th choice behind Darlow/Elliot, Newcastle)

So despite the risk due to active manager ownership, Button also looks like the only 4m GK who will actually play if the first team guy is injured/sent off. That's why he's in my team anyway. :)

As for my other GK, I think it's probably Pope if Heaton is transferred, a last minute panic on Ryan/Gunn/BOU if he isn't, or just Ederson.

Dean Henderson being over looked

21 clean sheets from 46
101 mins per goal
113 saves, 73% shots saved

He's so saved 3 of his last 4 penalties faced...

This is where I am at the moment. As soon as he went back to SU from Utd I immediately replaced Ryan with him as I think The Blades will be tighter at the back than BHA and I also think he is a better all round keeper anyway. Had De Gea left Utd I believe he would have been given a chance to be the number 1 there. He certainly believes he is capable of that whenever he is interviewed. So he isn't lacking in self belief.

Same. Sheffield United were pretty decent defensively last year. GK is such a tricky position to fill this year though.

Unless I change tack completely to go for a prem keeper then I can't see me moving off Hendo now. I think at that price he is just the best option.

It’s Alison or Ederson for me and then a £4m basket case.

They are very predictably the best scoring keepers. GK is a much more predictable FPL position than elsewhere on the field and if one of them gets injured it’s a simple switch.

I will save my transfers and fixture worries for elsewhere on the field.

Wolves' Will Norris linked with a season long loan to Ipswich. If that happens, Sondegaard will be promoted to third choice keeper behind Ruddy.

Whos Bournemouths first choice keeper? They have the best fixtures of the 4.5s IMO Begovic and Boruc were all over the place last season if I remember right

I fear to long playing the game has seen me sticking to my old ways and currently have a 4.5 in goal! This is through habit rather than statistical analysis though...

If I had to make an argument to back myself up I guess it would be the old 4.5 base price player - 130 points against the 1.5 million upgrade for an extra 50? Not convinced this season however....

I think we'd usually expect something around 140 from the best 4.5 keeper, and perhaps 170 or so for a premium keeper.

For a 1.5m price difference it feels quite close, but I'd still give the cheaper keeper the benefit of the doubt.

It doesn’t feel like any of this years crop of 4.5s can reach 140.

but you all plan to keep one keep or rotatate them, if you rotate would 140 be possible

Good luck with that as I would expect you to get less than the best and possibly the worst by rotating 2 GK's

What a strange transfer... surely not enough money to twist Burnley’s arm and surely moving to Villa is a step backwards for Heaton.

Annoyingly - Pope doesn’t seem quite fit... so I don’t trust putting him in my side for GW1.

TP will know better than I do, but my understanding was that Pope and Heaton had bad injuries for GK's ie always going to be a physical weakness kinda thing and at worst career ending, which is why the brought in Hart, and why he went there. tldr: the Pope may not be nailed due to recurring injury so you will need some Hart.

AV puts him in the window, if they go down; and if not could finish above Burnely? Also he doesn't have to worry about passing to the wrong side as they have the same coloured shirts 8-)

Burnley would rather have a 20% fit Pope in goal than a 100% Joe Hart 🤣

Heaton and Pope both 4.5 million and both number 1 keepers, could actually be a good starting plan and rotate them both accordingly

I'll be looking very closely at the last friendly, because it still doesn't seem quite as clear cut as hoped. I too have had Pope pencilled in for a while in the hope Heaton would leave.

https://www.lancs.live/sport/football/f ... s-16665514

Asked after the draw at Wigan, when Tom Heaton played his first 90 minutes of the summer, if he knew who would start the season as first choice between the posts Dyche said: "I might do."

The Clarets boss then reiterated his stance that he has a positive problem in picking one of his three England internationals.

He said: "I thought Joe was excellent the other night (at Fleetwood) I really do and I thought the crowd responded to it. He is a top keeper as is Tom and Popey. It is a great challenge to have but it is a challenge. Only one can play."

Asked if he had had to have honest conversations with the trio over the summer, Dyche said: "There's no need to be honest with them, they are experienced footballers, they are just playing in pre-season."

"They all want to play, rightly so," he said on the battle to be number one. "Popey had to be patient last year because he was fit and well from the end of January."

What concerns me slightly is the last line. If Pope was fully fit from January, why did he never make the bench over Hart all season if he is indeed ahead of him in the pecking order? :?
