Is it worth it taking the chance if Alonso would start? I have Rice on the bench as a sub if he wouldn't play at all.

Many players get a day off when they either deserve it, or need a day to shake off a knock

Likewise it's not unknown for clubs to manufacture things for players to miss international duty

He could have slept in

He may actually be injured

My guess is it's one of the above
