Goalkeeper Tactics for the Virgin Media Fantasy Football game

Continuing my analysis of game tactics, I'm going to focus this time on the Goalkeeper who can be a very important factor in a squad-based game.

The Goalkeeper points scoring is a little unusual in that:

a) The Goalkeeper is the only player who receives a team win/draw bonus;
b) The Goalkeeper receives 1 point per save made. A "save" is where a goalkeeper legally comes into contact with the ball to prevent a goal being scored.

Full goalkeeper scoring is as follows:

Goal 10
Assist 1
Save 1
Penalty kick save 5
Clean sheet 5
Goal Allowed -1
Yellow card -1
Red card -3
Team Win 3
Team Draw 1
Game Appearance 1
>70 Minutes Played 1

With 5 points for a clean sheet and 3 points for a 'team win' on offer, a home win with a clean sheet, and say a couple of saves thrown in as well, should result in a hefty 12 points for the Goalkeeper. If we compare this to a midfielder or forward, the midfielder would need to score 2 goals in the match whilst the forward would have to have 4 assists as well as 2 goals in order to match the 12 point haul (although both would have more chance of video bonus points). If a defender had a clean sheet plus a goal then he would just beat the goalkeeper with a score of 14 points. There's clearly some juicy points on offer if you get the goalkeeper selection(s) right!

So if we can fill the goalkeeper slot with someone who's going to have a maximum chance of a home win with a clean sheet then this should give a good scoring base. You might think that's easier said than done (and you're be right!) but with a squad-based game there are a couple of tactics we can use to help. For a start, we should select 2 goalkeepers and swap between the 2 goalkeepers so that our 'playing' goalkeeper is at home as much as possible. Home matches generate the most clean sheets and the most wins. So looking at the fixture lists to see which team generally plays away when another team plays at home (and vice versa) should highlight the best combination of goalkeepers to go for.

Some clubs never play at home together on the same day due to crowd policing issues. These would be clubs located fairly close to each other in the same city (and where the fans don't particularly see eye to eye!). For example, Aston Villa and Birmingham, Manchester United and Manchester City, Everton and Liverpool, and Arsenal and Tottenham are four combinations which should almost always give you a home choice each game week.

With the clean sheet and team win bonus I am going to be looking for the goalkeeper from two of the top clubs and each week playing whichever goalkeeper is at home. The budget can allow you to buy two high priced goalkeepers, particularly if you follow my advice from last week. Perhaps the combination that may attract many this season is the Manchester United and Manchester City goalkeepers? Other combinations to consider are Chelsea and Liverpool goalkeepers for August and September and then transferring the Chelsea goalkeeper for Manchester United's goalkeeper which would work until the end of November.

Thanks for your ideas, i am playing this game along with FPL as ALIENS  are not allowed at most of the UK based games,
I see what your logic is but the problem i have with it is with a goalie from one of the top teams sitting on the bench thats one of the quota of three allowed in any team not playing

im thinking that as defenders that can score goals might be the best way to go,

so looking forward to your next installment,

That is a factor but my opinion is that, due to the goalkeeper points on offer, it's probably worth it to maximise the chances of the clean sheet/win bonus combination.

If the two top teams (from where the Goalkeepers are taken) are say Liverpool (home) and Man Utd (away) then it's a case of whether Team A with £8m Reina playing at home (& £8m VDS benched) and defender X (not from Liverpool or Man Utd and priced in the low to mid-range value but chosen with clean sheet & goalscoring potential) will outscore Team B with the £8m VDS playing away (& a low value GK benched, say costing £2.6m) and a Liverpool defender (unknown value). Reina should outscore VDS in that situation over the season (even if the away goalkeeper picks up more saves) but whether the chosen Liverpool defender outscores Defender X by more points .... well that depends on the X factor.

The potential budget saving on the low value goalkeeper versus the budget saving on Defender X may also help Team B, although the overall budget is not too restrictive. Liverpool may be more likely to rest their defenders due to Champions League commitments which may help Team A. If there are bargain value defenders from the top clubs then that is a factor in favour of Team B. If there are a few midfielders listed as defenders (or penalty taking defenders) then this is a factor that should help Team A. There are probably other matters that would influence the decision.

Decisions, decisions.

P.S. Next instalment should be online by tomorrow morning - hopefully less in depth analysing than this post.

My goalkeeper tactics are made harder because the Virgin game doesn't include all the players. With Van der Sar injured and out for 2-3 months, Foster and Kuszczak will be starting for Manchester United, but Kuszczak isn't available for selection. Can anything be done about this?

So based on this, should your goal keeper always be your starman?

Have just been tinkering and delving into the Virgin media site statistics to see how i can improve my game and i have noticed that it seems not necessary to even have an emergency Goalkeeper in fact you can have 4 defenders plus 2 defenders on the bench and no other Goalkeeper apart from the one playing, i did not realise this was an option :?: did anyone play this option and how's it going you.

Yep, but by accident. I spent the first 4 weeks without having a captain because I hadn't read the rules properly

I'm 60th I think.

I would be too,but for your previous recent post saying you'd got no captain, which prompted me to check my team and find I'd been playing without a captain too !

Not sure for how long I'd been playing without one though it doesn't really matter as it's such an irritating game to play that I'm only doing so by default because they ignored my request at the start of the season to delete my team and I don't want to come last - I'm 31st in Fiso & 297th overall I see, without trying too hard and without a captain for a while. If Drogba doesn't play,I won't have one tonight either.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the game disappear when Dave Whelan(who's engaged in a legal battle with JJB/Mike Ashley) finally sues them for describing all season Wigan's stadium as the JJB Stadium, instead of the DW Stadium as it's been all season - I drew their attention to this as well, but they just ignored me again....oh,well.
